What the CFRC says
  • Aerospace Engineering Officers (AERE) lead the technical maintenance and engineering of RCAF aircraft fleets — fighters, transports, helicopters, maritime patrol, and trainers.
  • Engineering degree pathway through Royal Military College or sponsored civilian university (ROTP).
  • Direct leadership of large maintenance organisations; technical authority for airworthiness, modification, and operational readiness.
What it's actually like
  • AERE is one of the most professionally regulated officer trades in the CAF. Airworthiness authority, technical investigations, engineering decisions — these carry direct legal and operational consequences. The responsibility ramps quickly. So does the paperwork.
  • CF-18 sustainment, F-35A introduction (initial deliveries late 2020s), Cyclone maturation — all running through AERE shops. Engineers entering today will see fleets retire and enter service over a 25-year career. Plan to outlast at least one platform.
  • Wings (Cold Lake, Bagotville, Trenton, Greenwood, Comox, Winnipeg, Borden) and NDHQ for directorate roles. The career is operational engineering and program-management engineering in different proportions through the rank pyramid. Mostly the latter past Major.
  • Civilian transfer is direct — Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney Canada, IMP, L3Harris, CAE, Lockheed Martin Canada, Boeing Canada all hire AERE alumni. Maintain your P.Eng. through service. The defence industry pathway is well-trodden. Use it.
