RAAF Pilot

Royal Australian Air Force

Royal Australian Air Force pilot — commissioned aircrew trained through ADF Pilot Course at RAAF Base East Sale; streams to fast jet, multi-engine, or rotary fleets.

Flying for the RAAF is a serious career in a serious air arm. Australia operates the F-35A, the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the EA-18G Growler, the C-17, the C-130J, the KC-30A, and the P-8A Poseidon — a genuinely capable fleet. If you get through the pipeline, you will fly real aircraft on real operations. Here's what the careers website won't lead with: as of 2024, the RAAF has publicly committed to a 51% female recruitment target across its officer intake, and pilot selection is part of the broader push to diversify the force. That is a policy fact, not a rumour. What it means in practice: the selection environment is evolving. For female candidates, this creates genuine opportunity in a field that historically had significant barriers. For all candidates, the message is that technical aptitude, situational awareness, and the ability to learn under pressure remain the primary selection criteria — as they should be. The training pipeline is long and attrition is real. From initial officer training at RAAF East Sale through to operational front-line conversion is roughly five to seven years depending on aircraft type. The washout points are numerous: basic flying training, advanced flying, then type conversion. People who are outstanding in every other respect get removed because the flying doesn't click. It is not personal. It is what it is. Beyond the flying, a RAAF pilot's career includes staff postings, instructing, and exchange postings with allied air forces (particularly USAF, RAF, and RNZAF). These are genuinely good opportunities and broaden the career significantly. The work-life balance during operational flying is demanding — particularly during exercises and deployments. Families bear a real cost that deserves honest acknowledgement.

Training

Initial Officer Training at RAAF Base East Sale (10 weeks), then Basic Flying Training on the Pilatus PC-21 at 2 FTS East Sale. Advanced flying training phase determines streaming: fast jet (F-35A or F/A-18F conversion at 2OCU or 6 Squadron), multi-engine (C-17, C-130J, KC-30A), maritime patrol (P-8A), or rotary (MRH90 or CH-47). Total pipeline from IOT to front-line operational status is five to seven years depending on type.

Day to Day

Flying days involve pre-sortie briefing (one to two hours), the sortie (typically one to two hours), and a detailed video debrief. Non-flying days: simulator sessions, mission planning, continuation training, and the inevitable admin that military life generates. Fast jet pilots at 3, 6, 75, 77 Squadron can expect two to four flying days per week in garrison. Deployed operations and exercise periods increase tempo significantly.

Career Path

Flying Officer on commission, Flight Lieutenant by year five to six, Squadron Leader by year twelve to fifteen for sustained performers. The QFI (qualified flying instructor) and test pilot pathways exist for the most technically accomplished. Exchange postings with USAF, RAF, or other Five Eyes air forces are available and genuinely career-broadening. Wing Commander command of a flying squadron is the pinnacle for most career aircrew.

Civilian Skills

RAAF pilot hours and type endorsements support a clear pathway to ATPL and commercial aviation. Qantas, Virgin Australia, and regional operators actively recruit ex-ADF pilots. The conversion process is streamlined for military-trained pilots relative to civilian ab initio graduates. The military flying record and leadership experience are valued assets in commercial aviation and corporate flight departments.

Recruiter vs. Reality
What the ADFRP says
  • RAAF pilots fly the F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and are transitioning to the F-35A — among the most capable airframes in the Indo-Pacific.
  • World-class training with USAF, JASDF, ROKAF, and other allied air forces. Australia's geography makes RAAF aircrew some of the most internationally exercised flyers going.
  • Officer career with genuine responsibility early, and a civvy airline pathway after service.
What it's actually like
  • Pilot selection is genuinely brutal. The aptitude battery, the medical, the academics — they cull the majority before flying training begins. From application to wings is years, not months, and the attrition through the pipeline is by design, not accident. Plenty of people who walk into the recruiting office in flight jackets do not walk out of 2FTS with a brevet.
  • Pilot retention is a documented, ongoing problem. Qantas and Virgin Australia pay materially more than RAAF base rates for equivalent flying hours, and the gap widened during the 2016–2022 pay-stagnation period. Retention bonuses help; structural salary parity is a different conversation, and the airlines win it.
  • RAAF bases are spread across Williamtown, Tindal, Amberley, Edinburgh, Pearce, Townsville. Sounds geographically diverse — fast jet ops cluster in a handful of locations. F-35A operations are at Williamtown and Tindal. Posting preferences are noted; operational need wins.
