Combat Soldier (Australia)
Australian Army general-entry combat soldier — the trained dismounted infantryman serving with regular battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment.
The digger's trade. Infantry in the Australian Army is a legitimate fighting role with a genuine operational record — East Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq, Solomon Islands, and ongoing commitments in the Indo-Pacific. If you're joining for ops, this is one of the clearer paths to actually getting them. What they won't tell you at the ADFA open day: roughly sixty to seventy percent of your time is garrison life. Physical training, weapon cleaning, admin, guard duties, and sitting through safety briefs that haven't changed since 2004. The exercises are good when they happen — particularly in northern Australia, in Papua New Guinea, and on rotation to the US with Exercise Talisman Sabre — but between them there are long stretches of Puckapunyal or Darwin routine that require self-motivation to get through. The physical standard is non-negotiable and permanent. It's not something you achieve at Kapooka and then coast on. Your battalion will notice immediately if you're not maintaining it. Kapooka is twelve weeks and sets the baseline. IET adds the trade skills. By the time you reach your unit, you're functional but not experienced — that comes over the next two to three years through exercises and, if you're lucky, a deployment. The culture in an Australian infantry battalion is tight and can be genuinely extraordinary. It can also be insular and hard on people who don't fit the mould. Know yourself before you sign. Career wise, if you want to go somewhere, aim for corporal within three years and start thinking about specialist qualifications — sniper, pioneer, mortar fire controller. Staying as a private long-term is a dead end.
Recruit training at 1RTB Kapooka (12 weeks), followed by Initial Employment Training (IET) at the School of Infantry, Singleton (approximately 20 weeks for rifleman, longer for specialisations). Further trade qualifications including section commander's course are completed at unit level or through Army School of Infantry. Total pipeline from enlistment to posting to a unit is approximately eight to nine months.
PT parade at 0630 most mornings, typically run-based or gym. Morning: range work, section and platoon battle drills, navigation, or classroom instruction. Afternoon: weapon and equipment maintenance, administration, or continuation training. Guard duties and duty soldier rostered across the week. Exercise weeks break the garrison routine — these are 24/7 with no fixed structure. Friday afternoons are often lighter in garrison but never guaranteed.
Lance Corporal after roughly 12 to 18 months for strong performers; Corporal by year three to four. Specialist streams open at corporal — sniper, pioneer, combat first aider, mortar. Sergeant by year eight to ten is realistic with sustained performance. Warrant Officer Class 2 and then RSM pathway exists for the best NCOs. Late entry commission available for exceptional WOs. Defence Force Recruiting targets certain demographic groups and the service is actively monitoring retention, so promotion timelines have been tightening in recent years.
Leadership, physical fitness, and the ability to function under pressure are valued across emergency services, security, and construction supervision. ADF-issued licences for vehicles, plant, and firearms are partially recognised by state licensing authorities. The transition support available through ADF transition services is genuine but requires the individual to engage early — it won't happen by itself.
