Global Comparison · GI Bill equivalents

What is the GI Bill actually worth compared to the world?

Education benefit is the single most repeated recruiter line, and almost nobody tells you how it compares internationally. Here's every major allied military's post-service education program: what it funds, who qualifies, how long you have to use it, and whether you can pass it to your kids.

Methodology

Figures and program descriptions are sourced from each country's veterans-affairs body, defence ministry, or service-branch documentation. Where benefit amounts are calculated dynamically (US MHA tied to local BAH, German BFD tied to contract length, Israeli Pikadon tied to service designation) we describe the formula rather than fabricating a single dollar figure.

What stands out

  1. 01The Post-9/11 GI Bill remains the most generous publicly-funded military education program in the world by dollar value, especially after housing allowance is included.
  2. 02Germany's BFD is the closest peer in structure — it scales with contract length, runs for years after service, and pays your salary while you retrain. The headline number looks smaller because it doesn't bundle housing.
  3. 03Most European programs are reconversion-based: they activate when you leave service and exist to retrain you for a civilian job, not to send you to a four-year university for fun.
  4. 04Transferability to spouse and children is rare. The US Forever GI Bill, Australia's Long Tan Bursary, and Korea's honoured-veteran benefits are the standout exceptions.
  5. 05Time limits matter. The UK's ELC runs out 10 years after you leave. France's reconversion window is typically 1 year pre / 2 years post. The US removed its 10-year cap for post-2013 separations.
