USCG Sector Key West vs USCG Sector Puget Sound
Coast Guard, FL vs Coast Guard, WA
USCG Sector Key West: "Drug Interdiction at the End of the Road." USCG Sector Puget Sound: "Olympic Peninsula: The Coast Guard's Hidden Gem." Same base pay, same TRICARE, two entirely different answers to "would you go back?"
Honest version: USCG Sector Key West — Drug interdiction, Key West is a unique tropical paradise, but Extreme cost of living on the island. USCG Sector Puget Sound — Strait of Juan de Fuca operations, Olympic National Park on your doorstep, but Very isolated — Seattle requires a ferry. You'll spend more of your actual life in Key West, FL or Port Angeles, WA than on any range. That's worth weighing. USCG Sector Puget Sound: affordable enough to build wealth. USCG Sector Key West: expensive enough that your savings account is a rumor your spouse heard about. USCG Sector Key West's forecast: Tropical — warm year-round, hurricane risk. USCG Sector Puget Sound's: Cool marine climate, rainy, mild summers. Pack for both. Complain about both. That's the tradition.

Nearest City
Key West, FL (5 min)
Port Angeles, WA (5 min)
Nearest Airport
Key West International (EYW) — 10 min. Flights are expensive and limited. Miami International (MIA) — 3.5 hrs by car for cheaper/more options.
William R. Fairchild International (CLM) — 5 min (very limited commuter flights to SEA). Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) — 3 hrs via ferry + drive, or 5 hrs all-driving via Tacoma.
Housing
Extremely limited base housing. Off-base housing in Key West is among the most expensive in the country — $2,500-$4,000 for a 2-3BR. Some CG families live in Big Pine Key or Marathon (30-60 min up the Keys) for affordability. BAH is high but barely covers Key West rents.
No government housing. Port Angeles rent reasonable for Washington: $1,200-$1,800 for 2BR. Sequim (15 min east) popular with families — slightly drier microclimate and a bit cheaper. Housing inventory limited — start looking early when you get orders. BAH goes decently far but isolation means you buy a lot online.
Spouse Employment
Extremely limited and seasonal. Tourism, hospitality, and service industry dominate. Professional jobs are very scarce. Remote work is the most viable path for career spouses. Cost of living makes low-wage service jobs barely worth it.
Very limited. Port Angeles economy is timber, tourism, tribal enterprises, and healthcare. Olympic Medical Center and school district are major employers. Remote work is the primary option for professional spouses — internet adequate in town. Some work seasonal tourism jobs in the national park. Career progression requires remote work or a career pause.
Medical
Small CG clinic. Lower Keys Medical Center for emergencies. For anything complex, it is a 3.5-hour drive to Miami. Medical travel is a significant consideration for families with ongoing care needs.
Small CG clinic at Air Station for flight physicals and basic care. Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles handles most needs — decent community hospital. For anything complex, Seattle (3+ hrs or medevac flight). Nearest military hospital: Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM (4+ hrs ground). VA Puget Sound has Seattle campus. Medical isolation is real — plan accordingly for families with ongoing health needs.
Gate Commute
Small installation — no real gate traffic. Key West itself is 4 miles long — you can bike everywhere. The Overseas Highway (US-1) to the mainland is the only road and can bottleneck after storms or accidents.
Air Station gate is simple — small facility, no traffic. Port Angeles itself has zero traffic. The isolation IS the commute challenge: Seattle requires either a ferry from Kingston/Bainbridge (3+ hrs total) or driving around via Tacoma (5 hrs). Victoria, BC is actually closer by ferry (1.5 hrs). Stock up when you visit civilization — you will not run to Target on a whim.
