New Boston SFS vs USCG Sector Seattle
Space Force, NH vs Coast Guard, WA
New Boston SFS: "Space Ops Hidden in a New England Postcard." USCG Sector Seattle: "Puddle Pirates in the Most Beautiful Puddle on Earth." Different uniforms, different installations, same dawning truth: wherever you are, someone from the other branch is convinced they have it harder.
New Boston SFS: New Hampshire — no income or sales tax. The catch: Very small military community. USCG Sector Seattle: Seattle is a world-class city. The catch: High cost of living. New Boston SFS keeps your finances stable. USCG Sector Seattle keeps them "interesting" — and in military finance, "interesting" is never a compliment. Your off-post reality: New Boston, NH versus Seattle, WA. Both have their argument. Neither will make it on your behalf. Weather: New Boston SFS serves Cold snowy winters, pleasant summers, New England fall. USCG Sector Seattle counters with Mild and rainy, pleasant summers. Your uniform was designed for approximately neither.
Two bases, two branches, and the universal military truth: wherever you are, someone from the other branch is convinced their assignment is harder. They will tell you. At the bar. At length.

The Read
What nobody bothers to tell you until you arrive.
New Boston Space Force Station is one of the most unusual installations in the Space Force enterprise — a small, wooded, sub-100-personnel remote tracking station 50 miles northwest of Boston in rural Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The mission is the Satellite Control Network (SCN), the worldwide ground-station network the Space Force uses to command, control, and track satellites in orbit. The host unit is the 23rd Space Operations Squadron (23 SOPS), one of the SCN's remote tracking station squadrons, which operates from New Boston as part of Space Delta 6's broader satellite-operations and cyberspace-operations enterprise (managed back at Schriever SFB in Colorado). The other SCN remote tracking stations sit at Vandenberg, Diego Garcia, Guam, Kaena Point (Hawaii), Pituffik (formerly Thule), and Oakhanger UK — New Boston is the East Coast node of that worldwide ring. The base was originally established in 1942 as the Grenier Field Air Force Bombing Range, transitioned to satellite operations in the 1960s, and was redesignated New Boston Space Force Station on 26 July 2021 as part of the Space Force installation transition. The footprint is structurally small — roughly 100 active-duty/civilian/contractor personnel and a 2,800-acre installation that is mostly woodland with tracking antennas. There is no on-station family housing, no commissary, no exchange of consequence — this is a workplace, not a community. New Boston (the town, population ~5,800) is rural; Goffstown (10 min east) is the closer commercial town; Manchester (30 min east, NH's largest city at ~115,000) is the practical urban center for housing, healthcare, and amenities; Nashua (40 min southeast, ~91,000) is the secondary metro. Boston (1 hr south via Route 3 or I-93) is the structural metropolitan anchor. The honest local picture is the structural advantage that defines this assignment: New Hampshire has no state income tax on earned income (interest and dividends were taxed historically but the tax was fully repealed effective tax year 2025 per NH RSA 77) and no general sales tax — one of only two states (the other is Alaska) with neither. For Guardians and SF civilians moving from high-tax states, the take-home-pay differential is structural. BAH for MHA NH195 (Manchester/Concord) — E-5 with deps is $3,177; O-3 with deps is $4,233 — strong rates against a Manchester-area 3BR rental market of $1,800–$2,400. The trade is the structural smallness of the assignment: there is no SF community of any size here, the military social infrastructure (chapel, MFLC, MWR, child care) is minimal, and the SCN tracking-station mission set is technically focused but career-narrow if you want broader satcom/orbital-warfare exposure (which is structurally back at Schriever).

Real Talk
What you’ll actually deal with. The structured table above is the brief — this is the back-channel.
No on-station family housing at New Boston — everyone lives off-station. Bedford (15 min east, Bedford School District — top-rated, premium suburban, $2,200–$3,000 for 3BR rental, $550K+ to buy) is the consensus best-school move; Goffstown (10 min east, Goffstown SAU 19, mid-tier and well-regarded, $1,700–$2,300 for 3BR) is the closest-and-affordable move; Amherst / Mont Vernon / Milford (15–25 min south, SAU 39 / Souhegan Cooperative — top-rated Souhegan HS catchment, $1,900–$2,500) is the southern-school move; Manchester (25–35 min east, Manchester School District — mixed, the urban budget option, $1,400–$1,900) is the affordable move with shorter winter commutes; Nashua (35–45 min southeast, Nashua School District — well-rated NH urban district, $1,700–$2,300) is the Massachusetts-border move for spouses commuting south to MA tech employers. Winter driving on NH-13 / NH-114 / Route 101 is the structural variable — snow tires are not optional November through March, and the rural commute through unlit two-lane roads requires planning.
NH has strong public schools overall. Bedford School District (Bedford HS, top-rated in NH, the consensus military-officer move) is the elite choice. Souhegan Cooperative School District (Souhegan HS in Amherst, well-rated, strong arts/STEM, the southern-school move) is similar quality. Goffstown SAU 19 (Goffstown HS) is solidly mid-tier and the consensus pragmatic move for proximity to the station. Manchester SD is mixed — strong magnet programs but variable across the district. Several charter and independent schools in the area. No DoDEA. The proximity to Boston-area private schools (Phillips Exeter, St. Paul's, Brewster, Cardigan Mountain) is real for families pursuing boarding-school admissions.
23 SOPS operational tempo is technical-shift driven — SCN tracking-station operations run continuously, but the squadron is small and the rhythm is structurally a workplace squadron rather than a deployable operational unit. The Space Force is structurally young (established December 2019) and the SCN modernization (Satellite Communications Augmentation Resource, SCAR, and the broader SCN-to-Enterprise Ground Services transition) is reshaping how remote tracking stations integrate with the future ground architecture. Career narrowness is a structural reality — New Boston is satcom-and-SCN-focused; for broader Space Force exposure (orbital warfare, navwar, missile warning, cyber) follow-on assignments to Schriever, Buckley, or Vandenberg are the structural career path.
One of the most unusual SF assignments — a tiny New England satellite tracking station with a workplace-driven model, structurally civilian off-station lifestyle, and one of the most tax-favorable state environments in the US. Career capital for SCN-track Guardians is genuine but narrow. The trades are the smallness of the SF community and the structural rural-NH winter commute.
Who Thrives Here
Not every base is for every service member. Match yourself to the room.
- SCN OPERATIONS GUARDIANS
23 SOPS at New Boston is one of the SCN's worldwide remote tracking stations — career capital for satellite-operations Guardians (1C6X1/5C0X1) and the broader Delta 6 enterprise. The technical mission is narrow but credentialing-heavy; SCN-experienced operators are sought across the Space Force enterprise.
- NEW HAMPSHIRE / BOSTON-CORRIDOR FAMILIES
NH has no income tax and no general sales tax — one of the two most tax-favorable states in the US for military families. Manchester/Nashua/Boston-corridor lifestyle (Boston is 1 hr south, Manchester-Boston Regional MHT is the area airport, White Mountains 1.5 hrs north, Maine coast 1.5 hrs east, Lake Winnipesaukee 1 hr north) is structurally a quality-of-life multiplier for families that wanted New England. School quality in the area is strong.
- OUTDOORS / NEW-ENGLAND LIFESTYLE CAREERISTS
White Mountains skiing (Cannon, Loon, Bretton Woods, Waterville Valley — 1.5–2 hrs north), Lake Winnipesaukee (1 hr north), Vermont and Maine within easy weekend reach, Boston culture/sports/dining 1 hr south, NH fall foliage and four-season outdoor recreation. For families that wanted a New England assignment, New Boston is structurally one of the few SF installations that delivers it.
- AUTONOMY-SEEKING PROFESSIONALS
The installation is small, the military community is tiny, and most personnel live structurally civilian lives in Manchester/Nashua/Bedford/Goffstown. For Guardians and SF civilians who prefer a workplace-driven model and a fully civilian off-station lifestyle, the New England small-installation fit is structural.
