MCAS Yuma: "355 Days of Sunshine, 10 Days of Regret." MCB Camp Butler: "Welcome to Okinawa: Everything Is Restricted." Your buddy got one. You got the other. Neither of you has forgiven Branch yet.
MCAS Yuma: WTI is career-defining for Marine aviation. The catch: Yuma summer heat is brutal — 115°F+. MCB Camp Butler: Okinawan culture and beaches. The catch: Island can feel confining. MCAS Yuma runs low cost of living. MCB Camp Butler runs medium. The difference is whether your spouse works because they want to or because the landlord left a voicemail. Your off-post reality: Yuma, AZ versus Various, Okinawa, Japan. Both have their argument. Neither will make it on your behalf. MCAS Yuma's forecast: Extreme desert — one of the hottest cities in the US. MCB Camp Butler's: Subtropical — hot humid summers, mild winters, typhoon season. Pack for both. Complain about both. That's the tradition.
Two Marines installations where the assignment system is a roulette wheel — your marriage, your savings account, and your next five years as the stakes.

Housing
On-base housing available and adequate. Off-base in Yuma is very affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. Foothills area is the nicest part of town. BAH more than covers local rent. Some families live in the Algodones/San Luis border area.
On-base housing varies by camp — Camp Foster and Camp Kinser have family housing towers and duplexes. Off-base with OHA is possible and popular — Chatan and Ginowan are favorites. Japanese apartments are smaller than American norms but well-maintained.
Spouse Employment
Very limited job market. Agriculture, military support, and retail dominate. AWC (Arizona Western College) employs some. Remote work is the best professional option. San Luis border commerce provides some retail jobs.
SOFA status limits off-base employment. On-base jobs at MCCS, DoDEA, and NAF positions are the primary options. Some spouses find remote work with US employers. The on-base job market is competitive due to high demand.
Medical
Branch Health Clinic on base for routine care. Yuma Regional Medical Center handles most off-base needs. For specialty care, expect referrals to Phoenix or Tucson (3+ hrs). Medical access is a real concern for complex needs.
U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa (Camp Foster) — full hospital with ER, OB, dental, and most specialties. Serves all camps on Okinawa. Japanese hospitals are excellent for emergencies. TRICARE overseas covers off-base care.
Gate Commute
Main gate off I-8 has minimal traffic. Base is small and easy to navigate. Yuma is a small city — commutes anywhere in town are under 15 min. Non-issue.
Multiple camps, multiple gates. Traffic on Route 58 (main north-south artery) can be heavy during rush hour. Camp-to-camp commutes vary — Foster to Hansen is 30-40 min. Okinawa is small but congested.
