NSA AnnapolisVery limited on-base — mostly for senior staff. Off-base in Annapolis, Edgewater, Severna Park, and Crofton: $2,000-$2,800 for a 3BR. Anne Arundel County is expensive but waterfront living available.
Spouse Employment
Fort ShafterHonolulu has the most diverse job market in Hawaii — federal, tourism, healthcare, education. USINDOPACOM and USARPAC civilian positions available. Better than other Hawaii posts for professional spouses.
NSA AnnapolisStrong market. Tourism, boating industry, and government jobs in Annapolis. DC and Baltimore both commutable — massive federal, defense contractor, healthcare, and tech markets. Fort Meade/NSA (20 min) is a major employer for cleared personnel.
Medical
Fort ShafterTripler Army Medical Center (5 min) — full-service military hospital. Excellent care across specialties.
NSA AnnapolisBranch Health Clinic at the Academy — primarily serves midshipmen and active duty. Anne Arundel Medical Center for civilian emergencies. Walter Reed NMMC (Bethesda, 45 min) for full military hospital services.
Gate Commute
Fort ShafterFort Shafter is in urban Honolulu — no traditional gate delays. H-1 freeway congestion is the main issue. Living in Salt Lake, Aiea, or Moanalua keeps commutes under 15 min.
NSA AnnapolisGate access straightforward. Annapolis downtown streets are narrow and colonial — congested in summer and on Navy game days. Route 50 and I-97 connect to DC and Baltimore.
