NSA Souda BayLimited on-base housing. Off-base in Chania, Souda, and surrounding villages is the norm — Greek landlords, euros. OHA covers most rents. Finding housing can take time due to language barriers and Greek bureaucracy.
Spouse Employment
Fort RileyLimited locally. Manhattan has some opportunities through K-State (university jobs, research). Junction City is primarily military-dependent economy. Remote work is the best option for professional spouses.
NSA Souda BayVery limited. On-base positions are few. SOFA restricts off-base employment. Remote work for US employers is essentially the only option. Small community means most spouses engage in volunteer activities.
Medical
Fort RileyIrwin Army Community Hospital — community hospital with basic specialties. Complex cases are referred to Topeka or Kansas City. Expect some drive time for specialist appointments.

Gate Commute
Fort RileyGate traffic is generally light. The bigger issue is the on-post distances and the 15-20 min drive between Junction City and Manhattan. Winter wind chill makes any outdoor commute miserable.
NSA Souda BayMain gate — minimal delays given small population. Crete roads can be winding. Chania city center congested in summer tourist season.
