Fort Riley — 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), Manhattan, KS has a college-town vibe, but Remote — Kansas City 2+ hours away. You'll spend more of your actual life in Leavenworth, KS or Junction City, KS than on any range. That's worth weighing. Cost of living at both: low. If you can't build savings at either of these, the zip code isn't the problem. Fort Leavenworth's forecast: Hot humid summers, cold winters. Fort LeavenworthOn-post housing is some of the best in the Army — historic brick quarters for field-grade and above along "colonels row." Newer family housing also available. Off-post in Leavenworth and Lansing is affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. Many CGSC families live on post for the community.
Fort RileyOn-post housing (Corvias) is decent and avoids the commute. Off-post in Junction City is very affordable — $700-$1,000 for a 3BR. Manhattan, KS (home of K-State) has nicer options but slightly higher rent.
Spouse Employment
Fort LeavenworthLimited locally, but Kansas City (35 min) has an excellent and diverse job market — finance, healthcare, tech, and government. Many CGSC spouses are professionals who commute to KC or work remote. The CGSC community has strong spouse networking.
Fort RileyLimited locally. Manhattan has some opportunities through K-State (university jobs, research). Junction City is primarily military-dependent economy. Remote work is the best option for professional spouses.
Medical
Fort LeavenworthMunson Army Health Center — primary care and limited specialty services. Not a hospital. Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth handles emergencies. Kansas City (35 min) has world-class medical care — University of Kansas Health System and Saint Luke's.
Fort RileyIrwin Army Community Hospital — community hospital with basic specialties. Complex cases are referred to Topeka or Kansas City. Expect some drive time for specialist appointments.
Gate Commute
Fort LeavenworthGrant Avenue gate and Sherman Avenue gate — minimal traffic. This is a small post. The KC commute on I-70/K-7 is straightforward — 30-40 min depending on traffic. Morning commute into KC is manageable.
Fort RileyGate traffic is generally light. The bigger issue is the on-post distances and the 15-20 min drive between Junction City and Manhattan. Winter wind chill makes any outdoor commute miserable.
