MOS COMPARISON

AC vs AZ

Air Traffic Controller (USN) vs Aviation Maintenance Administrationman (USN)

Intel

Two Sailors walk into liberty port. One's been staring at a radar. The other's been wrestling an engine. Both need a beer with equal desperation.

A AC and a AZ walk into a bar. (This isn't a joke, it's a Tuesday at any military town.) The AC vents: the FAA pipeline is real — your credentials do transfer — but first you will do mid-watch from midnight to 0600 for years, drink enough coffee to strip paint, and explain to a nugget aviator for the fourteenth time what 'say altitude' means. The AZ counters with: nALCOMIS — the Naval Aviation Logistics Command Management Information System — will become either your closest ally or the source of your deepest professional resentments. The tab is split evenly. The experiences are not. Two MOS codes that produce two wildly different elevator pitches at the veterans' networking event.

Recruiter vs. Reality

The pitch versus what people who actually did the job report back.

ACAir Traffic Controller
What the Recruiter Says

Control the skies. You'll be guiding the most advanced military aircraft in the world, working in a high-tech environment where your decisions matter. The FAA will be begging to hire you the day you get out.

What It's Actually Like

You will sit in a darkened room staring at a radar scope for hours at a time, talking on four radio frequencies simultaneously while a pilot does something you specifically told him not to do. Your world is NAS Oceana approach control, or a ship's carrier air traffic control center where the CATCC smells like electronics and bad decisions. The FAA pipeline is real — your credentials do transfer — but first you will do mid-watch from midnight to 0600 for years, drink enough coffee to strip paint, and explain to a nugget aviator for the fourteenth time what 'say altitude' means. Certification requires a specific tower/approach background that shore duty assignments may or may not give you, which means your entire post-Navy plan can hinge on whether the detailer likes you. The job is genuinely skilled, genuinely high-stakes, and genuinely thankless until the moment a controlled emergency lands safely and you realize your hands were steady the whole time.

AZAviation Maintenance Administrationman
What the Recruiter Says

You'll manage the administrative program that determines whether aircraft are legally airworthy — work orders, aircraft logbooks, qualification records, and the documentation infrastructure that the Navy's safety and readiness systems run on. It's administrative work, but aviation administration where a documentation error can ground an aircraft or create a safety finding. MRO facilities, aviation logistics companies, and airline maintenance planning departments recruit AZs specifically because FAA-regulated maintenance documentation requirements need people who understand what they're doing, not just how to fill out a form. Aviation records management is consistently in demand and pays well above what most people expect.

What It's Actually Like

You are the person who makes sure the paperwork says the aircraft is fixed before anyone will let the aircraft fly, which sounds administrative until you realize that without you the entire maintenance cycle stops. NALCOMIS — the Naval Aviation Logistics Command Management Information System — will become either your closest ally or the source of your deepest professional resentments. Work orders, aircraft logbooks, parts requests, man-hour tracking: you are the connective tissue of a naval aviation maintenance department. The job is genuinely important and genuinely thankless because when everything works, nobody notices, and when a logbook discrepancy grounds an aircraft on launch day, everyone finds you. Shore duty at a wing headquarters or NAVAIR can be genuinely satisfying if you like systems and process. Deployment is a rhythm of production meetings, status boards, and that one aircraft that has been in maintenance so long it has its own folklore. You will leave with project management instincts, a tolerance for bureaucratic complexity, and a detailed understanding of how large organizations fail to communicate with themselves. This is worth more than it sounds.
