The Army promised both of these were "critical to national defense." The Army has a very generous definition of that phrase.
Two promises walked into a recruiting station. The first: "lead combat engineers who blow things up." The second: "learn to wire buildings." Both promises were technically true in the way that "water is involved in surfing" is technically true about the Navy. 12A reality: combat engineer company command is genuinely demanding leadership — the variety of capabilities under your command is broader than most branch peers and the technical decisions have real consequences. 12R reality: your civilian translation is exceptionally clear: electricians are perpetually in demand, apprenticeship programs will credit your time, and journeyman electricians in most markets make more than O-3s. Both qualify for the veteran hiring preference. One will actually need it.

“You'll lead combat engineers who blow things up, build things up, and clear the path for everyone else. Before you're 25, you'll be responsible for breaching operations, demolitions, route clearance, and construction missions that actually matter. After Engineer BOLC at Fort Leonard Wood, the branch offers Ranger School, Sapper School, Airborne — and civilian engineering firms specifically recruit Army engineer officers for the project management and leadership skills they don't teach in any MBA program.”
Engineer officers learn quickly that the branch does everything and gets credit for none of it — you blow things up, build things, clear minefields, and provide mobility that makes everyone else's mission possible, and then you attend the AAR where the maneuver brigade gets the recognition. Combat engineer company command is genuinely demanding leadership — the variety of capabilities under your command is broader than most branch peers and the technical decisions have real consequences. The staff years involve a lot of engineer planning annexes that nobody reads until they need them desperately. The Army has geographically concentrated engineer assignments which means your PCS history will involve a limited set of posts. The civilian construction management, project management, and infrastructure consulting markets have real appetite for Army engineer officer backgrounds and the PE pathway is accessible. The branch culture is proud of being the people who make the impossible happen — 'essayons' is not just on the crest.
“You'll learn to wire buildings — from rough-in to finish, from panel installation to troubleshooting. The Army trains you to a standard that the IBEW recognizes, and journeyman electricians are in shortage across the country. Licensed electricians in most markets start at $65-85K and supervisory roles push past six figures. Some IBEW locals count military electrical time toward apprenticeship hours, which compresses your timeline to the journeyman card. If you're looking for an enlisted MOS that gives you a legitimate skilled trade ticket when you get out, this is one of the most reliable bets in the Army.”
You are an electrician, which means everyone knows you until the power works and then nobody knows you exist. Your projects will range from wiring a new company operations center to 'why does this outlet spark when we plug something in' in a building that was constructed during a previous geopolitical era. The work is genuinely skilled — conduit bending, panel installation, load calculations, NEC code compliance — and the Army will occasionally let you use those skills between the stretches of fatigue duty that have nothing to do with electricity. Your civilian translation is exceptionally clear: electricians are perpetually in demand, apprenticeship programs will credit your time, and journeyman electricians in most markets make more than O-3s. The job site hazards are real and the Army's lockout/tagout culture is inconsistent in ways that should be more alarming than they are. You will develop opinions about wire gauges and breaker boxes that your family finds unnecessary. They are not unnecessary.

Engineer officer is one of the most versatile branches in the Army. You do everything from blowing things up to building them, and the breadth of experience is genuinely unique. What the recruiter won't emphasize: the engineer branch is split between combat engineers (tactical, field-focused) and construction engineers (project-based, more technical), and your career will lean one direction based on your assignments. Combat engineer assignments are physically demanding and operationally exciting. Construction assignments involve real project management of multi-million dollar builds. The civilian translation is among the best for combat arms officers: construction management, civil engineering firms, and project management roles all value the engineer officer skill set. If you have an engineering degree, the PE license plus military experience is an extraordinarily strong combination.
