Both recruiters said this was "the best job in the Army." Statistically, they can't both be right.
On one side of the military: your 'leadership development' is standing in formation waiting for someone to get yelled at for something you also did but didn't get caught doing. 'Master weapons systems' means you'll carry an M4 that was manufactured when Britney Spears was still relevant and learn to field strip it in your sleep — which is good, because you won't be getting much of it. Change the channel: your 'advanced surveillance systems' are your own eyeballs, some binos, and a LRAS3 that works when it feels like it and weighs approximately as much as your will to live. You're too mounted to be infantry and too light to be armor, and you've made this identity crisis your entire personality. Two veterans at a job fair, and one has four times more recruiters approaching them. Not the military kind of recruiter this time.

Recruiter vs. Reality
The pitch versus what people who actually did the job report back.
“As an Infantryman, you'll be the backbone of the Army. You'll lead soldiers in ground combat operations, master weapons systems, and develop unmatched leadership skills that translate directly to civilian careers in law enforcement, security management, and executive leadership.”
You will spend approximately 4,000% more time cleaning weapons than firing them. Your 'leadership development' is standing in formation waiting for someone to get yelled at for something you also did but didn't get caught doing. 'Master weapons systems' means you'll carry an M4 that was manufactured when Britney Spears was still relevant and learn to field strip it in your sleep — which is good, because you won't be getting much of it. The civilian translation of your resume is 'I can sleep standing up, carry things that weigh more than my future, and I have extremely strong opinions about which MRE is the best.' Your knees will file their own VA claim. You'll hate every second of it and talk about it for the rest of your life like it was the best thing that ever happened to you. Because it was.

You will argue with 11Bs about who's more infantry until the heat death of the universe, and neither side will ever win because the argument IS the point. Your 'advanced surveillance systems' are your own eyeballs, some binos, and a LRAS3 that works when it feels like it and weighs approximately as much as your will to live. You're too mounted to be infantry and too light to be armor, and you've made this identity crisis your entire personality. Every 19D has a Stetson and spurs story. Every single one of them will tell you about it, at length, unsolicited, at any social gathering, forever. The scouting part is actually cool when you get to do it, which is approximately never in garrison. Scouts out. Always out. Mostly out of patience.
The Real Life

PT at 0630, formation, weapons maintenance, ranges, and tactical drills. Most days end by 1700 but field problems run 72+ hours. Garrison time is heavy on maintenance and cleaning — you will mop floors that are already clean.
Reconnaissance patrols (mounted and dismounted), gunnery, vehicle maintenance, and tactical training. Scouts operate ahead of the main force, which means longer time in the field and more autonomous operations. Garrison is heavy on vehicle maintenance and gunnery qualifications.
OSUT at Fort Moore (GA) is 22 weeks of combined Basic and Infantry training. High-intensity, high-washout environment. Land navigation, live fire exercises, and forced marches. The last few weeks are the best — squad live fires and a final field exercise.

Extremely high. Rucking 35-70 lbs over rough terrain, room clearing, casualty drags, and operating on minimal sleep. Your knees, back, and shoulders will take a beating.
Very high. Scouts operate mounted and dismounted — you carry heavy combat loads on foot patrols and operate in cramped armored vehicles for extended periods. Physical fitness standards are high and enforced.
The recruiter will tell you infantry is the backbone of the Army, and that part is true. What they won't tell you is that peacetime infantry is 80% maintenance and cleaning, promotion is glacially slow because everyone has the same MOS, and your body will age faster than your peers in other fields. The camaraderie is unmatched — you will form bonds that last a lifetime — but the day-to-day can be mind-numbing between field rotations. If you want to be an infantryman, go all-in on schools and tabs, because that's what separates the ones who love it from the ones who count down their contract.
Cavalry scouts have an identity crisis that the Army itself created — you're not quite infantry, not quite armor, and you spend a lot of time proving yourself to both communities. The recruiter will sell the reconnaissance mission: operating ahead of the main force, gathering intelligence, and being the eyes and ears of the commander. That mission is real and important, but garrison life is dominated by vehicle maintenance and gunnery qualifications. The physical demands are infantry-level, promotion is just as slow, and the civilian translation is essentially zero unless you develop other skills. What 19Ds do have is exceptional tactical judgment, small-unit leadership experience, and a fierce independence that comes from operating in small teams. Those soft skills transfer well, but you need hard credentials (education, certifications) to make them count in the civilian world.
