The Army promised both of these were "critical to national defense." The Army has a very generous definition of that phrase.
The gap between "you'll command a rifle platoon" and what 11As actually do could fill a Congressional hearing. Same goes for "you'll lead combat engineers who blow things up" and the 12A experience. 11A learns: the actual leadership part is real — your platoon will watch everything you do and judge you mercilessly and correctly. Different flavor, same franchise: 12A discovers: combat engineer company command is genuinely demanding leadership — the variety of capabilities under your command is broader than most branch peers and the technical decisions have real consequences. The fact that this comparison exists is, itself, the kind of transparency the military hasn't figured out yet.

Recruiter vs. Reality

“You'll command a rifle platoon — 35-40 of the most capable warriors in the world — before your mid-20s. Infantry officers go to IBOLC, Airborne school, and Ranger School. The Ranger Tab is the most respected piece of cloth in the Army and it's yours to earn. You'll lead Soldiers in combat, shape careers, and build a record that puts you on the fast track to battalion command and beyond. This is the most demanding and most respected officer branch. Everything else is staff.”
ROTC or OCS will tell you that you're going to lead men in combat and carry on a tradition stretching back to Valley Forge. The first six months at your first duty station will teach you that you're going to manage PowerPoint presentations about training schedules, sit in meetings where the XO talks about the battalion's METL for ninety minutes, and spend Friday afternoons at Health and Welfare inspections. The actual leadership part is real — your platoon will watch everything you do and judge you mercilessly and correctly. The hardest part of being a butter bar Infantry officer is accepting that your SFC knows ten times what you know and learning from him instead of pretending otherwise. Company command is genuinely meaningful. Battalion staff is where Infantry officers go to die a slow death of OER bullets and staff sync briefs. The combat part, if it happens, will be nothing like Ranger School. Ranger School is still worth doing. Do the job right and your NCOs will follow you anywhere.

Before you're 25, you'll be responsible for breaching operations, demolitions, route clearance, and construction missions that actually matter. After Engineer BOLC at Fort Leonard Wood, the branch offers Ranger School, Sapper School, Airborne — and civilian engineering firms specifically recruit Army engineer officers for the project management and leadership skills they don't teach in any MBA program.”
Engineer officers learn quickly that the branch does everything and gets credit for none of it — you blow things up, build things, clear minefields, and provide mobility that makes everyone else's mission possible, and then you attend the AAR where the maneuver brigade gets the recognition. Combat engineer company command is genuinely demanding leadership — the variety of capabilities under your command is broader than most branch peers and the technical decisions have real consequences. The staff years involve a lot of engineer planning annexes that nobody reads until they need them desperately. The Army has geographically concentrated engineer assignments which means your PCS history will involve a limited set of posts. The civilian construction management, project management, and infrastructure consulting markets have real appetite for Army engineer officer backgrounds and the PE pathway is accessible. The branch culture is proud of being the people who make the impossible happen — 'essayons' is not just on the crest.
The Real Life

Platoon leader (LT): leading 30-40 soldiers in training, ranges, and field exercises. Company commander (CPT): responsible for 120-200 soldiers, equipment worth millions, and the readiness of an infantry company. The job is leadership — planning, deciding, and being accountable for everything your unit does or fails to do.
Leading engineer platoons and companies in mobility, countermobility, and survivability operations. Planning construction projects, managing demolition operations, and coordinating engineer support to maneuver units. The job blends technical engineering with combat leadership.
Infantry Basic Officer Leader Course (IBOLC) at Fort Moore (GA) is about 17 weeks. Covers infantry tactics, land navigation, weapons employment, and platoon operations. Ranger School is expected — nearly all infantry officers attend, and not having a Ranger Tab is a career disadvantage.
Engineer Basic Officer Leader Course (EBOLC) at Fort Leonard Wood (MO) is about 18 weeks. Covers combat engineering, construction management, demolitions, and route clearance. The training balances tactical engineer operations with technical engineering skills.
Extremely high. Infantry officers are expected to exceed the physical standards of their soldiers. Rucking, running, and leading from the front in all conditions. Your fitness is constantly evaluated by your subordinates.
High. Engineer officers are expected to maintain combat arms physical standards. Field exercises involve hands-on construction, demolition, and obstacle operations alongside your soldiers.
Infantry officer is the most traditional leadership path in the Army. You will lead soldiers in the most demanding conditions the military has to offer, and the weight of that responsibility is both the best and hardest part of the job. What nobody tells you at commissioning: the career path is brutally competitive. Everyone has a Ranger Tab, everyone has deployments, and the selection for battalion command (the make-or-break career gate) rejects the majority of qualified officers. The peacetime infantry experience is heavy on administrative burden — PowerPoint, mandatory training trackers, and risk assessments consume time that you want to spend training. The leadership experience is genuinely transformative, and infantry officers are highly recruited by corporate America (management consulting, tech leadership, finance). But the Army will take everything you give it and ask for more.
Engineer officer is one of the most versatile branches in the Army. You do everything from blowing things up to building them, and the breadth of experience is genuinely unique. What the recruiter won't emphasize: the engineer branch is split between combat engineers (tactical, field-focused) and construction engineers (project-based, more technical), and your career will lean one direction based on your assignments. Combat engineer assignments are physically demanding and operationally exciting. Construction assignments involve real project management of multi-million dollar builds. The civilian translation is among the best for combat arms officers: construction management, civil engineering firms, and project management roles all value the engineer officer skill set. If you have an engineering degree, the PE license plus military experience is an extraordinarily strong combination.
