Sergeant Major Charlie Clawson enlisted in 1996 as a motor vehicle operator and worked his way to the top of the Marine Corps enlisted ranks, eventually serving at Headquarters Battalion, Training and Education Command, Quantico. Somewhere along the way, he started wearing decorations he never earned — nine of them, worn openly between January 2019 and October 2023. The list included a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, a NATO Service Medal, a Kosovo Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia.
Wearing an unearned Purple Heart doesn’t just lie about your own service. It borrows credibility from every real one.
The Fake Doctorate
The medals weren’t the only fabrication. In May 2019, Clawson submitted what the charge sheet calls "a bogus doctoral degree and transcript from Liberty University" to Marine Corps Manpower and Reserve Affairs — an official statement the charge sheet says was "totally false, and was then known by the said Sergeant Major Clawson to be so false." A senior enlisted leader, at the top of the promotion pyramid, invented a graduate degree and put it in his own official file.
The Court-Martial
Clawson was convicted on all nine unauthorized-decoration specifications plus the false-statement charge on September 13, 2024. The sentence: demotion from Sergeant Major, the Marine Corps’ highest enlisted rank, all the way down to Sergeant — a fall of three full pay grades, in public, at the end of a nearly thirty-year career.
Why It’s Not Just Funny
A fake diploma is a punchline. A fake Purple Heart is different in kind — it borrows the specific, hard-won credibility of people who actually bled for the country, and spends it on a resume. The Marine Corps didn’t treat this as a paperwork error. It treated it as what it was: a senior leader who lied his way to the top of the institution and got caught by the institution he lied to.
