What Makes a Great Duty Station?
Every service member has different priorities, but the highest-rated bases tend to share common traits: proximity to major metro areas, reasonable cost of living relative to BAH, quality on-post housing or accessible off-post options, strong local communities that welcome military families, and commands with healthy work-life balance expectations.
Geography matters too. Bases near coastlines, mountains, or vibrant cities consistently rate higher for quality of life — though the operational tempo and unit leadership can override any geographic advantage. A beautiful location with terrible leadership still scores poorly, and rightly so.
These rankings aggregate experiences across MOS, rank, and time period. Your experience at any given installation will depend heavily on your unit, your leadership chain, and your personal situation (single vs. family, rank, etc.). Use these as a starting point and read individual reviews for details that matter to your specific circumstances.
How Base Rankings Work
Base rankings are calculated from the overall rating scores in reviews that include a duty station selection. Reviews are weighted by verification tier — peer-verified reviews carry 1.5x weight, VA-verified 1.75x, and on-the-record reviews carry 5x weight.
Installations with fewer than 5 reviews are marked as “early data” to indicate lower statistical confidence. We do not rank bases that have no reviews at all. Rankings update daily as new reviews are submitted.
