The Fog Does Half Your Job

Sector San Francisco means your AOR includes the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, which is a cooler commute backdrop than literally anyone else in the entire Department of Defense, and you will mention this at every possible opportunity for the rest of your career. The Bay Area will destroy your finances while enriching your soul — a trade-off that sounds poetic until you see your bank statement and realize your avocado toast habit is a line item that rivals your car payment. The fog rolls in so thick you're essentially doing SAR just finding your car in the parking lot, and Karl the Fog has better social media presence than your entire sector combined. Sourdough bread is a food group and you will defend this position with a hostility that surprises even you. Fisherman's Wharf tourists will ask if you're in the Navy and you'll die a little inside every time. The mission is real — one of the busiest commercial ports, constant vessel traffic, the occasional whale rescue that makes your Instagram look like a National Geographic feature. The cost of living is a war crime that no amount of COLA can fix, but when you're on patrol under the Golden Gate at sunset and the city lights up behind you, you'll understand why nobody here puts in a transfer request.

Nearest AirportSan Francisco International (SFO) — 20 min. Oakland International (OAK) — 30 min for budget carriers.
HousingNo on-base housing. San Francisco is one of the most expensive housing markets in the US — $3,000-$4,500 for a 3BR. Most CG families live in the East Bay (Vallejo, Concord, Richmond) or South Bay. BAH is high but still a stretch.
SchoolsSan Francisco Unified is a mixed bag — some excellent schools, others struggling. East Bay and South Bay suburbs (Walnut Creek, Pleasanton) have top-rated school districts. Research carefully by neighborhood.
MedicalNo military medical facility. TRICARE covers outstanding civilian options — UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Health (South Bay), Kaiser Permanente network. Some of the best healthcare in the country.
Spouse EmploymentBay Area job market is exceptional — tech (Silicon Valley), biotech, finance, healthcare, and startups. Highly competitive but high-paying. Remote work culture is strong. One of the best markets for professional spouses.
Commute / GatesNo gates — urban assignment. San Francisco traffic and bridge tolls are painful. BART (rail) and Muni help. If living in the East Bay, bridge commutes add 30-60 min. Parking in the city is scarce and expensive.
Local AreaSan Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world — cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf, incredible restaurants, and stunning bay views from almost everywhere. Mark Twain's "coldest winter" quote applies — bring layers in July. The city's homelessness crisis is visible but neighborhoods like the Marina, Sunset, and Richmond are livable and charming.
