Tripler Army Medical Center
Tripler is the Pepto-Bismol-colored hospital on the hill that overlooks Honolulu and confuses every tourist who spots it from Waikiki and asks 'what IS that pink building?' It's the largest military hospital in the Pacific — TAMC serves all branches across the Indo-Pacific region — and one of the only places you can practice medicine while watching surfers at Ala Moana from the cafeteria window. The views from the hospital grounds are genuinely world-class: Diamond Head, downtown Honolulu, and the Pacific Ocean stretching to infinity. You're in Hawaii — the beaches, the food (poke bowls, plate lunches, malasadas, loco moco), and the hiking (Koko Head stairs will destroy your legs and reward your soul) are all world-class. The cost of living will make you consider a second career, a third roommate, or just eating rice and spam for every meal. The COLA is essential. The pink paint job — officially 'Tripler Rose' — was chosen in 1948 to blend with the surrounding hills, which it absolutely does not and never has. Nobody has satisfactorily explained this decision in 75+ years.
