Suggest a Feature →Sumter & the South Carolina Midlands
Sumter is small. Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach are all within reach.
Shaw AFB in Sumter, South Carolina is home to the 20th Fighter Wing (F-16s) and is the Air Force's dedicated CAS (close air support) training hub. Sumter itself is a small city of about 41,000 — a typical small military town with adequate services and limited entertainment.
The geographic position is Shaw's real asset: Columbia (the state capital) is 45 miles west, Charleston is 100 miles southeast, Myrtle Beach is 70 miles east, and the Congaree National Park (old-growth bottomland forest) is 45 minutes west. None of these require an overnight stay.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
The Gamecock (Sumter)
"Sumter's best local restaurant. Southern food done properly."
For a town Sumter's size, The Gamecock provides a reliable upscale option — South Carolina-sourced ingredients, classic Southern preparations, and the kind of service that takes pride in the work.
Sgt. White's Diner (Sumter)
"The local breakfast institution. Biscuits and gravy, South Carolina-style."
A local diner that has been feeding Sumter for decades — reliable, cheap, and genuinely local. The breakfast is the anchor: big biscuits, gravy with the right consistency, and eggs done properly.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Congaree National Park
"The largest intact old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the US. 45 minutes."
Congaree National Park protects 26,000 acres of ancient floodplain forest with some of the tallest trees in the eastern US. Boardwalk trails are accessible year-round. The firefly synchronization event in late May (lottery required) is one of the most extraordinary natural events in the country.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
South Carolina Battlegrounds (Camden, SC)
"The Battle of Camden — the worst American defeat of the Revolution."
Camden, 30 miles from Sumter, was the site of the Battle of Camden (August 16, 1780) — the worst American defeat of the Revolutionary War, where General Gates lost 1,000 soldiers in an hour. Historic Camden has an excellent interpretive center and reconstructed colonial village.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Riverbanks Zoo & Garden (Columbia)
"One of the best zoos in the Southeast. Substantial military discount."
Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia (45 miles from Shaw) has 2,000+ animals and 70 acres along the Saluda River, plus a 70-acre botanical garden. The gorilla habitat, aquarium, and farm are standouts.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The Grand Strand. 60 miles of beach. Mixed bag — choose your section."
Myrtle Beach's 60-mile strand has sections ranging from family-friendly to high-density resort strip. North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island are the quieter, more local sections. Huntington Beach State Park (with Atalaya Castle) is the finest beach in the region.
Columbia (45 minutes) is your primary entertainment destination. The Five Points and Vista neighborhoods have the best restaurant and bar options.
The Myrtle Beach Air Force Festival air show (occasional) is worth the drive east.
SC military pay exemption — understand your state tax liability before filing.
Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie (the Santee Cooper lakes, 60 miles south) have excellent freshwater striped bass and catfish fishing.
Swan Lake Iris Gardens is free and is genuinely one of the most unusual places in South Carolina.
Sumter is a small city with limited off-duty options. The drives to Columbia, Myrtle Beach, and Congaree are the essential activities — budget gas money and time for regular excursions.
