Suggest a Feature →Morris County & the New Jersey Highlands
Army armament research in the New Jersey Highlands — NYC 45 minutes east.
Picatinny Arsenal is the Army's Joint Center of Excellence for Guns and Ammunition — where every Army weapon system's ammunition is developed, tested, and fielded. It's a small, research-focused post in the New Jersey Highlands with a predominantly civilian scientist and engineer workforce. The military population is modest.
The surrounding Morris County area is affluent, suburban, and beautiful — the New Jersey Highlands have rolling hills, state forests, and more hiking than most people associate with New Jersey. Dover (the nearest town) is a working-class railroad hub. Morristown (10 minutes) is a prosperous historic town with excellent restaurants. New York City is 45 minutes east when traffic cooperates.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Morristown Restaurant Row
"Morristown has a dining scene that surprises everyone."
Morristown's South Street and DeHart Street have a concentrated restaurant corridor — Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen (farm-to-table in a historic inn), Zinc (upscale American), and multiple independent restaurants that serve the affluent Morris County professional community. The food quality is significantly better than the suburban NJ reputation suggests.
Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen is the standout — James Beard-quality food in a 200-year-old building. The farm-to-table menu changes seasonally. Reserve ahead on weekends.
Dover Latin District
"Authentic Central and South American restaurants minutes from the arsenal."
Dover has a large Latin American immigrant community that has created an authentic corridor of Mexican, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, and Colombian restaurants. Far cheaper than Morristown and equally good or better for everyday eating.
Look for restaurants without English-language menus — those are the most authentic. Peruvian ceviche and Colombian bandeja paisa are worth specifically seeking out.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
New Jersey Highlands Trail Network
"More hiking than most people know exists in New Jersey."
The New Jersey Highlands have 800,000 acres of protected forest, reservoir watersheds, and ridgeline terrain accessible from Picatinny Arsenal. Farny State Park, Kittatinny Valley State Park, and portions of the Appalachian Trail are all within 20 miles. The Allamuchy Mountain State Park has excellent mountain biking.
The Allamuchy Mountain State Park trail network is outstanding for mountain biking and is less crowded than comparable NJ trails. The NJ Highlands trail app maps all accessible terrain.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
New York City (45 min)
"The world's cultural capital is 45 minutes east on a good traffic day."
New York City is the dominant cultural resource for Picatinny personnel — accessible by car (45 min off-peak) or NJ Transit from Dover or Morristown train stations. The full NYC cultural infrastructure (Smithsonian affiliate museums, Broadway, world food, Central Park) is within reach.
The NJ Transit Morris and Essex Lines from Dover and Morristown run directly to Penn Station. A monthly NJ Transit pass is significantly cheaper than parking in NYC. Use it from day one.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Space Farms Zoo & Museum (Sussex County)
"A family-owned private zoo in NJ with rescued North American wildlife."
Space Farms Zoo in Sussex County has been a New Jersey institution since 1927 — black bears, cougars, bison, timber wolves, and North American wildlife in a private zoo that also has a sprawling antique and farm museum. Quirky and genuinely charming.
This is a regional institution that NJ families have visited for generations. The black bear feeding is the signature event. Combine with a Delaware Water Gap hike for a full day.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The university town. Einstein's home. Nassau Street restaurants."
Princeton is 45 minutes south — the Ivy League campus, Nassau Street boutiques and restaurants, the Princeton Art Museum, and the Einstein historic sites. The walking tour of the campus is free.
"Independence Hall, Eastern State Penitentiary, and superior cheesesteaks."
Philadelphia is 75 minutes southwest — Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Eastern State Penitentiary (the most atmospheric prison in America), and the Reading Terminal Market.
"The most beautiful river valley in the Northeast. Storm King, Dia Beacon."
The Hudson Valley is 75 minutes north — Storm King Art Center (outdoor sculpture on a mountain above the Hudson), Dia Beacon (world-class contemporary art museum), Catskill wineries, and the historic Gilded Age estates.
The NJ Transit Morris Line is your NYC connection. A monthly pass is well worth the investment for regular visits.
Morris County has excellent school districts — Chester, Mendham, and Mountain Lakes are the best for military families who can get appropriate BAH-covered housing.
The NJ Highlands trail system is seriously underutilized by Picatinny personnel. It's excellent hiking territory with minimal crowds.
Morristown's restaurant scene is better than its size suggests. Build a rotation of the South Street corridor establishments.
New Jersey has among the highest property taxes, gas taxes, and overall cost of living in the country. BAH helps but NJ housing costs are real. The small military community means fewer on-post social activities than larger installations. The compensations — NYC proximity, excellent school districts, and the beautiful Highlands — are genuine but depend on actively using them.
