Osan Air Base sits in Gyeonggi Province, about 55 kilometers south of Seoul in the city of Pyeongtaek. It's the primary US Air Force installation in South Korea, home to 7th Air Force headquarters, the A-10 Warthog community, and multiple fighter and reconnaissance squadrons. The operational environment is uniquely serious: this is a combat-coded base inside a theater with an actual adversary 50 kilometers to the north.

The Korean experience divides into two distinct realities. On-base life is distinctly American — chain restaurants, American vehicles, and English everywhere. Off-base Korea is something else entirely: one of the world's most modern, dynamic, and distinctive cultures. Korean food, Korean transit systems (exceptional), Korean social life, and Seoul — one of the great cities of Asia — within an hour.

The professional military community in Korea is intense. 1-year unaccompanied tours are common, meaning the bar scene around Osan Gate (the "Ville") absorbs significant social energy. Families who come accompanied have a fundamentally different experience and generally report very positive assignments.

"The strip outside the gate. Everything Korean, nothing expensive."

The market streets outside Osan Gate have been feeding military personnel for 60+ years. Tteokbokki, mandu, pajeon, grilled skewers — everything. The quality ranges from excellent to extraordinary.

Things only people who've been there know.
01

Get a T-money card (transit IC card) in your first week. It works on all Korean public transit — subway, bus, even some taxis. Reload at any convenience store.

02

Naver Map outperforms Google Maps significantly for Korean navigation. Download it immediately.

03

The Korean medical system outside Osan is very good. KATUSA soldiers (Korean soldiers assigned to US units) are often helpful navigating off-post healthcare if needed.

04

Respect Korean customs around food and drink: pour for others before yourself, wait for elders to begin eating, use both hands when receiving items from others.

05

The demilitarized zone (DMZ) is one of the most interesting and sobering historical sites in Asia. USO tours run regularly from Seoul and Osan — do this early in your tour.

Honest Warning

The 1-year unaccompanied nature of many Korea assignments can be socially isolating and the drinking culture around the gate areas is genuinely intense. Make intentional decisions about how you spend your time. The people who thrive in Korea are the ones who engage with the country rather than spending all their time on post or in the Ville.
