The Naval Support Activity near Memphis. Blues, BBQ, and the mighty Mississippi.
NSA Mid-South sits in Millington — a suburb 20 miles north of Memphis. The installation is a major Navy administrative and training hub, hosting Navy Personnel Command and other fleet support functions.
Memphis is the real draw: one of America's most culturally significant cities — the birthplace of the blues, the home of Graceland, the city where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, and the undisputed capital of American BBQ. The cultural weight here is extraordinary.
The Mississippi River defines Memphis — wide, powerful, and omnipresent. Beale Street at night is a tourist experience but also a genuine piece of American musical heritage.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
Central BBQ
"Memphis dry-rub ribs. The definitive version."
Memphis BBQ is a world unto itself — dry-rubbed ribs, pulled pork, and sausage with a mustard and tomato-based sauce on the side. Central BBQ is the consistent top pick among locals and the military community.
Chez Philippe (Peabody Hotel)
"Memphis' finest restaurant in a legendary hotel."
The Peabody Hotel is a Memphis institution (famous for its trained ducks that march through the lobby twice daily) and Chez Philippe is its flagship restaurant — elegant French-influenced Southern cuisine.
Payne's Bar-B-Q
"The local secret. Cash only, open until sold out."
Payne's is the Memphis BBQ that locals take their most discerning out-of-town guests to — cash only, minimal hours, open until they're sold out. The chopped pork sandwich on white bread with mustard slaw is foundational.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Shelby Forest State Park
"Old-growth hardwood forest and Mississippi bottomland. 20 minutes north."
Shelby Forest is one of the largest state parks in Tennessee — old-growth bottomland hardwood forest with hiking trails and lake access. The mature tupelo and cypress are stunning in fall.
Meeman-Shelby Forest Paddling
"Flatwater kayaking in bottomland forest."
The sloughs and oxbow lakes in Meeman-Shelby Forest offer excellent flatwater kayaking in a subtropical bottomland forest. Blue herons, wood ducks, and the occasional barred owl make this a quality paddling experience.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
Beale Street
"The birthplace of the blues. Every night is live music."
Beale Street is a tourist district built on genuine history — W.C. Handy composed "Memphis Blues" here, and the street has hosted live music continuously since the 1860s. Go on a weeknight to hear real blues without the weekend crush.
Graceland
"Elvis Presley's home. The second most-visited house in America."
Graceland is exactly what you expect and more — the shag carpet, the Jungle Room, the trophy building, and the meditation garden where Elvis is buried. If you're there for any length of time, you have to go.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Memphis Zoo
"One of the finest zoos in the South. Giant panda exhibit."
The Memphis Zoo is consistently ranked among the top zoos in the country — the Giant Panda exhibit, the Egypt exhibit, and the overall quality of animal care make it excellent for families.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"One of the most devastating Civil War battles. Preserved battlefield."
Shiloh is where 23,000 men were killed or wounded in two days in April 1862 — one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The battlefield is hauntingly intact and the NPS auto tour is excellent.
"William Faulkner's town. University of Mississippi and Southern literary culture."
Oxford is one of the South's great literary towns — William Faulkner's Rowan Oak is open for tours, Square Books is one of the finest independent bookstores in the South, and the University of Mississippi's Grove is incomparable on football Saturdays.
Memphis BBQ debates are religious. Try Central BBQ, Payne's, Cozy Corner, and A&R Bar-B-Que before picking a side.
The National Civil Rights Museum is one of the most important museum experiences in the US. Go early in your assignment — it provides essential context for the city.
Beale Street is best on a Tuesday or Wednesday night when locals are there and tourists have thinned out.
Memphis traffic is manageable by major city standards. The 20-mile drive from Millington to downtown Memphis on US-51 is your daily reality.
Memphis has a genuine crime problem in certain neighborhoods — be aware of your surroundings and research where you're going after dark. The city is entirely worth knowing, and the vast majority of tourist and military community activity is in safe areas, but don't be naive about the context.
