Jet Training in a Town That's Not Sure What a Jet Is For

NAS Meridian is where the Navy trains fighter pilots in the middle of Mississippi, because apparently learning to land a jet on a carrier in the open ocean wasn't stressful enough without also navigating a town where the Piggly Wiggly is the social hub and Walmart is the Friday night destination. Meridian is the kind of place where everyone knows you're military because you're the one who looks confused at the gas station asking 'is this the good one?' — and the answer is always 'they're both the same.' The cost of living is so low you'll feel rich for the first and last time in your naval career: three-bedroom houses with yards for what a San Diego parking spot costs. The Jimmie Rodgers Museum celebrates the Father of Country Music. The food is soul food, fried catfish, and BBQ that's better than it has any right to be in a town this small. You're a student pilot, which means your social life is the ready room, your best friend is whoever has the same flight schedule, and your weekends alternate between studying and staring at the Mississippi pine trees wondering when carrier quals start.

Local AreaMeridian is a small Mississippi city with genuine Southern charm but very limited amenities. A few restaurants, a brewpub, and the historic Railway Museum downtown.
