Misawa Air Base sits adjacent to Misawa city in Aomori Prefecture — the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main island of Honshu. The base hosts a joint JASDF/USAF mission with F-16s and ISR assets, and is one of the few truly joint bases in Japan.

Aomori Prefecture is Japan's apple capital and one of the most traditional regions of the country — famous for the Nebuta Festival (one of Japan's greatest summer festivals), extraordinary seafood, and winter conditions that rival anything in the continental US.

Misawa is far from Tokyo (8 hours by car, 3 hours by Shinkansen to Hachinohe) but the remoteness is the point — the Tohoku region of northern Honshu is deeply traditional Japan, with a warmth toward Americans that reflects the long US presence.

"Mongolian-style mutton BBQ. Hokkaido influence in northern Honshu."

Jingisukan (Genghis Khan BBQ) is a specialty of northern Japan — a domed cast-iron grill at the table center where thin-sliced lamb and mutton cook with vegetables. The sauce is distinctive and the ritual communal. Many Misawa families consider this the assignment's signature dish.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

Winter driving in northern Honshu requires studded snow tires or chains — understand the base transportation safety requirements before driving off-base in winter.

02

The Nebuta Festival accommodations in Aomori book out a year in advance. Book the moment your assignment is confirmed.

03

The Hachinohe Sunday Morning Market is Japan's largest outdoor market — arrive at 6am for the best seafood before it sells out.

04

Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) are common in the mountains around Misawa. The Shimokita Peninsula trip is worth planning — it's one of the strangest landscapes in Japan.

05

Misawa's joint US/Japanese base structure gives you genuine interaction with JASDF personnel — the relationships formed here are professionally valuable and personally rewarding.

Honest Warning

Misawa winter is severe — heavy snow, ice, and cold that will test anyone from a temperate climate. The remoteness from Tokyo (8 hours by car) means this is not an assignment for people who need regular big-city access. But the traditional Tohoku culture, the extraordinary seasonal festivals, the world-class skiing, and the tight-knit base community create bonds and experiences that veterans of this assignment consistently describe as among the most formative of their careers.
