Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay sits on the windward side of O'ahu — the wet, lush, greener side of the island shielded from Honolulu's congestion by the Ko'olau Mountains. The base occupies a peninsula jutting into Kaneohe Bay with the mountains as a backdrop and the Pacific on three sides. It's objectively one of the most beautiful military installations in the world.

The surrounding community is equally exceptional. Kailua (15 minutes east) is consistently ranked among the best beach towns in America — walkable, boutique shops, world-class beaches, and a food scene that punches above its size. The trade winds keep the windward side cooler and clearer than Honolulu. The H-3 Freeway through the Ko'olau tunnels is legitimately one of the most scenic commutes in any military city.

"Kailua's neighborhood institution. Two locations, excellent food."

Kalapawai has been a Kailua institution for decades — fresh sandwiches, local produce, great coffee, wine, and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly captures windward O'ahu life. The market location on Kalaheo is the classic local deli format.

Insider

The Kalaheo Ave location (near the beach) is better for a post-beach lunch. The Kailua town location (Kailua Rd) is better for morning coffee and working. Both are excellent and frequently packed.

"Kailua's best breakfast. Expect a wait. Worth it."

Over Easy does creative breakfast and brunch with local ingredients — loco moco variations, eggs bennies with Hawaiian flavors, and some of the best pancakes on the island. Consistently excellent.

Insider

Waits of 30-45 minutes on weekend mornings are normal. Put your name in and walk to the nearby boutiques. Go early on weekdays to avoid the crush.

"The most beautiful military beach in the Pacific. Restricted access is the point."

Bellows Field Beach Park has a section available to military families with beach cottages, camping, and some of the most pristine windward beach on O'ahu. The restricted access keeps the crowds manageable. The MWR beach cottage reservation system fills months in advance.

Insider

Book Bellows MWR cottages the moment reservations open — they go within minutes. Bellows is also occasionally open to the public on weekends; military access is nearly year-round. Worth every effort to secure a cottage weekend.

"Ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Mangrove kayaking. Hidden from tourists."

He'eia Fishpond is a 1,000-year-old Hawaiian aquaculture system that's being restored by the local community. He'eia State Park overlooks Kaneohe Bay and the Ko'olau Range from a beautiful vantage point. Kayak rentals from the park area.

Insider

The non-profit Paepae o He'eia manages the fishpond restoration and welcomes volunteers. Participating in a work day is a genuine cultural experience. The mangrove kayak tours through the bay are outstanding.

Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.

Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach

Beach

Kid OK

"Consistently among the best beaches in the world. Your backyard."

Kailua Beach is a long, curving white sand beach on a turquoise bay sheltered by offshore islands — with consistent trade winds making it the kiteboarding capital of the Pacific. Lanikai, just south, is smaller, calmer, and even more stunning. Both are within 15 minutes of the base.

Insider

Rent a kayak from Kailua Beach Adventures and paddle out to the Mokulua Islands (Na Mokulua) — two offshore islands with bird sanctuary protected beaches. The snorkeling off the rocks is excellent.

Ko'olau Range Hiking Trails

"Dramatic ridge lines above the base. Some of Hawaii's best hiking."

The Ko'olau Range provides world-class hiking from the windward side — Olomana (three peaks, challenging), Pillbox Trail (Lanikai pillboxes with panoramic bay views), and the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. The views over Kaneohe Bay from the ridge are extraordinary.

Insider

The Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Maui Pillbox Trail) is 2 miles round-trip with 600 feet of elevation gain — doable in 1-2 hours and delivers spectacular bay views. Go early before heat. The trail is unmarked from the road; look it up on AllTrails before going.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial (Ford Island)

"The defining American military historic site. Plan a full day."

The Pearl Harbor sites — USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri Battleship, USS Bowfin Submarine, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum — collectively tell the story of December 7, 1941 and WWII Pacific theater in extraordinary depth. It's 25 minutes from MCBH via H-3.

Insider

The USS Arizona Memorial requires timed tickets (free, reserve at recreation.gov months in advance). Military ID speeds access. Arrive early — the sites are busy year-round but early mornings are significantly less crowded. The aviation museum is excellent and underrated.

Bishop Museum (Honolulu)

Museum / Hawaiian Culture
$$
Kid OK

"The foremost museum of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural history."

The Bishop Museum is Polynesian and Hawaiian cultural history at its best — the Hawaiian Hall (three stories in a Victorian building) covers Hawaiian royalty, natural history, language, and navigation traditions. The Science Adventure Center is excellent for children.

Insider

The Planetarium at Bishop Museum is Hawaii's best. The Jhamandas Watumull Planetarium shows combine astronomy with Hawaiian star navigation traditions — the science of wayfinding that guided Polynesian voyagers across the Pacific.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

The H-3 Freeway through the Ko'olau tunnels is one of the most scenic commutes in the military. Leave a few minutes early to appreciate it rather than rushing.

02

Island fever is real. Build a rotation of O'ahu activities and plan inter-island trips (Maui, Big Island, Kauai) to keep fresh perspective on the assignment.

03

MCBH MWR has exceptional resources — beach cottages at Bellows, recreational equipment rentals, and access to facilities across all services on O'ahu. Use them.

04

Grocery prices in Hawaii are 30-40% above mainland prices. The commissary on base is significant. Use it religiously — the savings on a family's monthly grocery bill are substantial.

05

Remote work from Hawaii is increasingly common and viable. If your spouse can secure remote employment before arriving, the financial calculus of a Hawaii assignment improves significantly.

Honest Warning

Hawaii is the most expensive military assignment in the country by a significant margin. BAH is the highest in DoD and still may leave a gap for market-rate Kailua rentals. Many families find that single-income life in Hawaii requires real sacrifice on dining, entertainment, and travel. Island fever affects some people deeply after 12-18 months. And the distance from mainland family — typically $800-$1,400 per round-trip airline ticket — creates its own financial and emotional pressure. None of this changes how beautiful the assignment is. But go in with clear financial planning.
