Suggest a Feature βHavelock / New Bern, North Carolina
Harrier and F-35 country. Crystal Coast access and the Neuse River.
MCAS Cherry Point sits adjacent to Havelock β a small city of 22,000 built around the air station. The base hosts Marine aviation including the F-35B and the Naval Air Depot that maintains aircraft from across the fleet.
Havelock itself is limited, but the location is superb: New Bern (25 miles west) is one of North Carolina's most beautiful historic towns, the Crystal Coast beaches (Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle) are 35 miles east, and Camp Lejeune is 50 miles north.
This is Eastern North Carolina coastal living β fresh seafood, waterway access, and a military community that's interconnected with the nearby Marine and Navy installations.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
The Chelsea (New Bern)
"New Bern's finest restaurant in a beautiful 1912 drugstore."
The Chelsea occupies the original Pepsi-Cola building in New Bern (birthplace of Pepsi) and is the city's most accomplished dinner β well-sourced local ingredients, a strong wine list, and elegant surroundings.
Captain Ratty's (New Bern)
"Waterfront seafood and cold beer on the Trent River."
Captain Ratty's is New Bern's beloved waterfront spot β local oysters, shrimp, and fish served on a dock overlooking the Trent River confluence. Low-key, authentic, and exactly what Eastern NC seafood should be.
Blackbeard's Triple Play (Atlantic Beach)
"Fresh-off-the-boat Crystal Coast seafood."
Atlantic Beach has multiple good seafood restaurants β Blackbeard's keeps it local with North Carolina caught fish and shrimp. Casual, cash-friendly, and exactly what a beach seafood shack should be.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Atlantic Beach / Emerald Isle
"The Crystal Coast. Less crowded than the Outer Banks."
The Crystal Coast beaches β Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Emerald Isle β have clearer water and fewer crowds than the Outer Banks. Fort Macon State Park on Atlantic Beach is excellent for beach access and Civil War history.
Neuse River Paddling
"Flatwater kayaking through cypress swamp."
The Neuse River estuary near Cherry Point is one of the widest rivers in North America and excellent for kayaking and fishing. The upper reaches have beautiful cypress and tupelo swamp paddling.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history β dig in.
North Carolina History Center (New Bern)
"Regional history and the Pepsi-Cola birthplace story."
New Bern is the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola (invented by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in 1898) and has a museum complex telling both the town's colonial history and the Pepsi origin story. The gift shop sells Pepsi items you can't find elsewhere.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
"Excellent NC aquarium with a 300,000-gallon tank. Military discount."
One of NC's three state aquariums, the Pine Knoll Shores facility is legitimately excellent β a 300,000-gallon tank with sharks and rays, a river otter exhibit, and excellent rotating displays on North Carolina's remarkable marine biodiversity.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"Wright Brothers, Cape Hatteras, and wild Mustang ponies."
The Outer Banks are 1.5-2 hours north β Kill Devil Hills (Wright Brothers National Memorial), Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Ocracoke Island, and the wild Corolla Mustang ponies. Make it an overnight.
"Neighboring Marine base area. More Crystal Coast beaches."
Swansboro and Topsail Island north of Camp Lejeune offer quieter beach communities and additional access to the Crystal Coast. The Hammocks Beach State Park is accessible only by ferry.
Cape Lookout ferry reservations are required in season (May-September). Book well in advance on recreation.gov.
New Bern is 25 miles away but is significantly better for dining and entertainment than Havelock. Make it your weekend destination.
The Crystal Coast beaches are much less crowded than the Outer Banks. Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle in September are exceptional.
Venus flytraps grow wild in the Croatan Forest pocosins β illegal to pick but extraordinary to see. They're a coastal plain endemic found naturally only in eastern NC.
Havelock is a small military town with minimal commercial options. New Bern, the beaches, and Camp Lejeune's broader community are your real social infrastructure. Hurricane season (June-November) affects this area β know your evacuation routes and have a plan.
