Maxwell AFB
Maxwell is home to Air University, where mid-career officers go to read books, write papers about airpower theory that nobody will read, and network aggressively while calling it 'professional development' — which is technically true in the same way that a golf outing is technically 'cardio.' Air War College and Air Command and Staff College are here, and the rank concentration is so dense you'll salute your own shadow, accidentally call a colonel 'sir' three times before reaching the coffee machine, and attend more O-6 retirement ceremonies than actual classes. Montgomery has deep civil rights history that deserves serious engagement — the Rosa Parks Museum, the Edmund Pettus Bridge in nearby Selma, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice — plus excellent Southern food (Central BBQ, Filet & Vine, and a soul food tradition that predates the base) and summers that feel like breathing through a wet towel that someone microwaved. The PowerPoint output from this installation could power a small nation's energy grid if converted to electrons.
