The most isolated UPT base. World-class bass fishing, tight community, and San Antonio a tank of gas away.

Laughlin Air Force Base trains more pilots annually than any other base in the Air Force — the 47th Flying Training Wing operates T-6 Texan II and T-38 Talon aircraft over the vast expanse of Texas and northern Mexico. The airspace is unrestricted in every direction, which makes it excellent for pilot training.

Del Rio is a small Texas border city of 35,000 — the Rio Grande forms the southern boundary and Amistad Reservoir (one of the largest lakes in Texas) lies immediately northwest of town. The bass fishing at Amistad is world-class. Ciudad Acuña, Mexico (across the river) is accessible when current travel conditions permit. San Antonio is 2.5 hours east. There is nothing glamorous about Del Rio, but the UPT community is the tightest in the Air Force and the fishing is extraordinary.

Must Eat

The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.

El Ranchero Restaurant (Del Rio)

Tex-Mex
$$
Kid OK

"Del Rio's premier Tex-Mex. The border-town flavor is the real thing."

Del Rio's proximity to Mexico means the Tex-Mex and interior Mexican cooking is distinctly more authentic than what you get inland. El Ranchero has been feeding the community for years with enchiladas, fajitas, and the kind of salsa that comes from actually being on the border.

Insider

The flour tortillas are made in-house. The queso flameado (queso with chorizo, flamed tableside) is the starter. Do not miss the margaritas — Del Rio knows how to build one.

Jack's Roadhouse (Del Rio)

Kid OK

"Del Rio's casual gathering spot. Laughlin community's go-to."

Jack's Roadhouse is where the Laughlin community ends up for casual evenings — burgers, wings, cold beer, and a relaxed atmosphere without pretension. When you're in a small Texas border town, reliable is everything.

Insider

Friday evenings have live music regularly — country and Texas rock. The outdoor patio is the place to be in the spring and fall when the temperature is pleasant.

Hidden Gems

What the internet won't tell you. What the locals actually know.

Amistad National Recreation Area

Lake / National Park
$$
Kid OK

"World-class bass fishing. Cliff jumping. 57,000 acres of Texas blue water."

Lake Amistad (Amistad Reservoir) is a 67,000-acre reservoir on the Rio Grande — impounded by Amistad Dam in 1969. The largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and striped bass fishing is among the best in Texas. Clear blue water (the reservoir is deep), cliff jumping, kayaking, and snorkeling are the other activities. The national recreation area encompasses both U.S. and Mexican shores.

Insider

The guided bass fishing at Amistad is world-class. Local guides know the structure and the seasonal patterns — a day with a guide pays for itself in fish. The Rough Canyon area on the north end has the best cliff jumping (20-30 feet into deep clear water). Check water temperatures — spring and fall are optimal.

Seminole Canyon State Park

State Park / Rock Art
$
Kid OK

"4,000-year-old Native American rock paintings. One of the most significant sites in North America."

Seminole Canyon State Park (40 miles east on US-90) protects the Pecos River region rock art — ancient pictographs by the Pecos River people dating back 4,000 years. Guided tours by park rangers are the only access to the main sites (Fate Bell Shelter).

Insider

Book the guided tour in advance — it runs twice daily and fills up. The canyon hike to Fate Bell Shelter is 1.5 miles round-trip on rugged terrain. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes. The interpretive program is genuinely excellent.

Outdoor

Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.

Devil's River (State Natural Area)

River / Kayaking
$$$

"The clearest river in Texas. Class II-IV kayaking through limestone canyon."

Devil's River is one of the clearest and most pristine rivers in the state — fed entirely by springs, with limestone canyon walls and Class II-IV rapids depending on water level. The Devil's River State Natural Area requires a permit and has strict access limits to protect the ecosystem.

Insider

Access is extremely limited — permits sell out months in advance. You must have kayaks or canoes (no inner tubes). The guided kayak outfitters in Del Rio have the permits and run excellent multi-day trips. Worth the planning effort.

Culture & History

Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.

Ciudad Acuña, Mexico (When Permitted)

Border Town / Mexico
$

"The border town across the Rio Grande. Authentic Mexican food and shopping."

Ciudad Acuña is Del Rio's sister city across the Rio Grande — accessible by the international bridge (check current travel conditions and State Dept. advisories). The mercado district has authentic Mexican restaurants, crafts, and pharmacies. The crossing is straightforward with valid U.S. passport.

Insider

Check the current State Department travel advisory before crossing. When conditions permit, Ciudad Acuña has excellent and very inexpensive authentic interior Mexican food — birria, cochinita pibil, and seafood dishes not found in Del Rio proper.

Outdoor / Recreation
$$
Kid OK

"Amistad boat ramps, fishing, and desert hiking. Del Rio's backyard."

The Val Verde County area around Del Rio provides extensive outdoor recreation appropriate for families — Amistad's shoreline for swimming and picnicking, desert hiking in the brush country, and access to the national recreation area facilities (boat ramps, camping).

Insider

The Rough Canyon Marina (30 min north) rents pontoon boats for half-day and full-day trips on Amistad. This is the practical family day on the lake experience — no need to own a boat. The marina also sells bait and tackle.

Day Trips

When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.

San Antonio155 mi

"Texas's most livable city. 2.5 hours east."

San Antonio is the primary city escape for Laughlin families — the Riverwalk, the Alamo, Pearl District restaurants, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Laughlin families typically build monthly San Antonio trips into the rotation.

Big Bend National Park230 mi

"The most remote national park in the lower 48. Worth the long drive."

Big Bend is 3.5 hours south — the Rio Grande, Chisos Mountains, Santa Elena Canyon, and Boquillas hot springs on the Mexican side (when border crossing is permitted). Plan a full weekend. A required destination for any West Texas assignment.

Insider Intel
Things only people who've been there know.
01

The Laughlin UPT community is famously close — the isolation creates the bonds. Participate in every squadron event, BBQ, and social gathering, especially in the first month.

02

Amistad bass fishing is world-class. Get a fishing license immediately on arrival and start learning the reservoir. The guided fishing trip investment on your first spring is worth every dollar.

03

The Mexican food in Del Rio is significantly better than you'd find in a non-border Texas city. The proximity to Mexico makes even the Tex-Mex places more authentic.

04

San Antonio is your city. Build a monthly trip into the budget. The Pearl District alone is worth the 2.5-hour drive for the restaurant and market quality.

Honest Warning

Del Rio is genuinely one of the most isolated assignments in the Air Force. There is no nearby city, the entertainment options are minimal, and the heat from June through September is extreme. Spouses who cannot work remotely or who need professional employment will have a very difficult time. The community is tight because it has to be — lean into it or the isolation will win. The fishing and the flying are world-class. Everything else requires intentionality.
