F-22s, Moose, and a Cost of Living Allowance That Barely Helps

JBER in Anchorage combines F-22 Raptors (the most advanced air superiority fighter in the world) with Army infantry (the 4-25 Airborne, a.k.a. 'Spartan Brigade') on one of the most visually stunning bases in the DoD, which is great because the scenery distracts from the fact that a gallon of milk costs $7 and Amazon Prime 'two-day delivery' is a suggestion not a guarantee. Anchorage has everything a mid-size city offers — restaurants, breweries, a performing arts center, a Costco — plus mountains, glaciers, and wildlife that doesn't care about your PT score, your rank, or your plans. Moose roam the base like they own it (they do). The COLA helps your paycheck survive Alaska prices. The 6 hours of winter daylight does not help your mental health, your vitamin D levels, or your relationship. But the flip side — 20+ hours of summer daylight, midnight sun hikes, world-class fishing, skiing at Alyeska — makes you briefly believe this was the best assignment ever. Every JBER service member's Instagram is 90% aurora photos, 5% moose encounters, and 5% crying about shipping costs.

Nearest AirportTed Stevens Anchorage International (ANC) — 10 min. Major cargo hub with direct flights to Seattle, many Lower 48 cities, and Asia.
HousingOn-base housing available on both Elmendorf (AF) and Richardson (Army) sides — waitlists vary by rank and season. Off-base in Anchorage (Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer) — $1,600-$2,200 for a 3BR. COLA supplements help offset high costs.
SchoolsNo DoDEA. Anchorage School District serves the area — decent overall. Eagle River and Chugiak schools are popular with military families. Homeschooling is also common given the outdoor lifestyle.
MedicalJoint Base Hospital (673rd Medical Group) — full hospital with most specialties. Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage is a Level II trauma center for anything complex.
Spouse EmploymentAnchorage has a reasonable job market for Alaska — healthcare, oil industry support, state government, and retail. Federal jobs on base. Remote work is viable. The market is smaller than Lower 48 metros but Anchorage is a real city with real employers.
Commute / GatesMultiple gates — Muldoon and Boniface gates from Anchorage, Government Hill gate. Morning traffic on the Glenn Highway from Eagle River can be heavy. Richardson side has separate Army gates.
Local AreaJBER sits at the edge of Anchorage with the Chugach Mountains as a literal backdrop. Anchorage is a real city — Costco, REI, breweries, sushi, and a growing food scene. Eagle River (15 min north) is a popular military family community. The outdoor recreation is unmatched anywhere in the military — fishing, hiking, skiing, wildlife, and the Northern Lights. COLA and special duty pay help with the high cost of living. Summers feature 20+ hours of daylight. Winters feature 5-6 hours. The experience is polarizing — people either love Alaska passionately or endure it. Most who embrace it say it was the best assignment of their career.
RecreationWorld-class salmon and halibut fishing · Denali National Park (4 hrs) · Alyeska ski resort (45 min) · Chugach State Park hiking — trailheads from base · Northern Lights viewing Oct-Mar · Portage Glacier and wildlife viewing
