The National Training Center: 37 miles from Barstow, which is 37 miles from anything, which is 37 miles from civilization — a mathematical proof that the Army specifically chose the most remote location in the continental U.S. and said 'this is where we'll break them.' You're here to get absolutely wrecked by the OPFOR — the 11th ACR, 'Blackhorse,' the only unit in the Army that genuinely enjoys their job because their job is destroying rotational units' self-esteem with superior knowledge of the terrain, tactics, and exactly where your weaknesses are. They live here. They know every wadi. They will find you. The Mojave Desert will sandblast your soul, sunburn your everything, and deposit sand in places you didn't know your body had pockets. Las Vegas is 2.5 hours away, which is where your paycheck goes for post-rotation decompression — a tradition as old as NTC itself. The stars at night are genuinely incredible because there is zero light pollution for a hundred miles — the Milky Way is so bright it looks fake, and you'll stare at it from your sleeping bag wondering how something so beautiful exists in a place this miserable. Barstow itself has a Denny's and an identity crisis.
