Suggest a Feature →Petersburg, Virginia — Chester, Richmond & the James River
Richmond 30 minutes north. Civil War history. Low cost, high quality of life.
Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly Fort Lee) is the home of Army Logistics — the Quartermaster School, Transportation School, and Army Logistics University. The base is the training hub for sustainment across all branches. The PME and training environment means a constant rotation of students alongside the permanent party.
The immediate community is Petersburg — a city with significant Civil War history (the Petersburg Campaign was the longest siege in American military history) and ongoing economic challenges. But Chester, Colonial Heights, and Chesterfield County (10-15 minutes north) provide excellent suburban neighborhoods. And Richmond (30 minutes north) is a legitimately excellent city with one of the best food and brewery scenes in the mid-Atlantic.
Must Eat
The spots worth eating at before you PCS out.
The Croaker's Spot (Petersburg / Richmond)
"Virginia soul food tradition. Fried croaker, pork chops, and cornbread."
Virginia soul food is built around fried fish (croaker and whiting), collard greens, sweet potatoes, and cornbread. Multiple spots in Petersburg and Richmond's Southside serve this tradition authentically. Croaker's Spot is a Petersburg institution.
Go for lunch on a weekday — the lunch specials are the best value and the fish is freshest. Petersburg's soul food scene is genuine and underpriced by any regional standard.
The Roosevelt (Richmond)
"Richmond's benchmark restaurant. Virginia ingredients done seriously."
The Roosevelt on Church Hill is one of Richmond's defining restaurants — named for Theodore Roosevelt's visit to Richmond, it serves Virginia pork, local seafood, and seasonal vegetables with serious skill. Consistent quality and one of Richmond's great interiors.
The weekend brunch is exceptional. Make reservations — The Roosevelt is almost always full. The cocktail program is excellent and the bar welcomes walk-ins when tables are booked.
The Pit and the Peel (Chester)
"The local neighborhood spot in Chester. Military families' go-to."
Chester has a handful of good local restaurants serving the military and suburban community. The Pit and the Peel does solid BBQ and Southern sides with the kind of familiar comfort food that makes it a regular dinner rotation for Fort Gregg-Adams families.
Chester has more good local restaurant options than most people expect. Explore the commercial strips on Chester Road — several solid spots that don't get written up anywhere.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
James River Park System (Richmond)
"Class 3-4 whitewater rapids in the middle of a city. Kayaking, tubing, hiking."
The James River cuts through downtown Richmond with Class 3-4 rapids — the only urban Class 4 whitewater in the country. The James River Park System provides 550 acres of trails, swimming holes, cliff jumping, and riverside recreation within the city limits.
Pony Pasture Rapids (southwest Richmond) is the best family swimming and tubing spot. Texas Beach and Belle Isle (accessible via pedestrian bridge from downtown) are the most popular destinations. Belle Isle has excellent hiking and a WWII POW camp ruins.
Pocahontas State Park
"The largest state park in Virginia. 15 minutes from Chester."
Pocahontas State Park covers 7,950 acres of forest, lake, and trail — mountain biking trails (one of the best mountain bike networks in the state), swimming lake, camping, and hiking. It's practically adjacent to Chester and Fort Gregg-Adams.
The Swift Creek Lake swimming area is excellent for families. The mountain bike trail network ranges from beginner to expert — the Lakeview Trail (beginner) is family-appropriate. Camping reservation fills in advance for summer weekends.
Culture & History
Places with stories. Most military towns sit on deep history — dig in.
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)
"One of the best encyclopedic art museums in the South. Free admission."
The VMFA has a permanent collection covering 5,000 years of art — Fabergé eggs, Art Nouveau, American modernism, and an outstanding African art collection. Free general admission. The restaurant inside is excellent for lunch.
The VMFA has free admission to the permanent collection and charges only for special exhibitions. The café and restaurant are surprisingly good — the museum restaurant is a legitimate lunch destination. Parking in the museum garage is free with museum admission.
Carytown and Fan District (Richmond)
"Richmond's best neighborhoods. Walkable, diverse, excellent dining."
Carytown is Richmond's most distinctive shopping and dining street — independent restaurants, boutiques, the Byrd Theater (oldest independent movie theater in Virginia), and an energy that reflects Richmond's creative class. The Fan District (historic rowhouse neighborhood) is adjacent.
The Byrd Theatre shows current films at significantly reduced prices ($4 on Tuesdays and matinees) in a restored 1920s movie palace. The organ plays before Saturday evening shows. Don't miss it.
Family
Stuff to do with the kids. Rated by people who have brought actual children.
Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation
"One of the best county parks systems in Virginia. Chester and Midlothian."
Chesterfield County has an excellent parks and recreation system — Chester's Swift Creek area, Rockwood Park, Huguenot Flatwater paddle trail, and an extensive youth sports league infrastructure that serves military families well.
Chesterfield County's youth sports programs (soccer, baseball, lacrosse) operate on tight registration windows. Register as soon as you get PCS orders confirmed — some leagues have waitlists. The Chesterfield military family Facebook group has up-to-date league information.
Kings Dominion (Doswell)
"Virginia's major regional theme park. 45 minutes north."
Kings Dominion is 45 minutes north of Chester — a full regional theme park with roller coasters, water park, and family rides appropriate for all ages. Military discount pricing is available.
Military appreciation discount tickets are typically available through the base MWR/ITR office at significant savings over gate pricing. Season passes are also available at military discount rates. The park is less crowded on weekdays.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"The American founding era. Living history at its best."
Colonial Williamsburg is the most ambitious living history museum in America — costumed interpreters, working taverns, the Governor's Palace, and the colonial capitol building. Yorktown Battlefield (final battle of the Revolution) is 15 minutes away. Military discount pricing at Williamsburg.
"The most beautiful valley in Virginia. Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive."
The Shenandoah Valley is 2 hours west — Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive (105 miles along the Blue Ridge crest), and the Shenandoah River for kayaking and tubing. Fall color (October) along Skyline Drive is spectacular.
Chester is the right choice for most Fort Gregg-Adams families — Chesterfield County schools are significantly better than Petersburg City, the neighborhoods are family-friendly, and the commute to the base is 15-20 minutes.
Richmond is your city. 30 minutes, outstanding food scene (consistently ranked top 10 nationally), the James River, museums, and minor league baseball (Flying Squirrels) at The Diamond.
Virginia's ABC system means liquor is purchased only at state ABC stores — plan accordingly for stocking your home bar. Wine and beer at grocery stores is normal.
The Civil War battlefields in the Petersburg and Richmond area are among the most significant in the country. A military professional's read of the campaigns and logistics is highly rewarding.
Petersburg itself has significant socioeconomic challenges. The schools in Petersburg City are not recommended for military families — Chesterfield County (Chester, Midlothian) is strongly preferable. Don't let the quality of the off-post town mislead you about the quality of the assignment — Richmond and Chesterfield County make it significantly better than first impressions of Petersburg suggest.
