Fort Cavazos

ArmyTX, US
The Great Place (Citation Needed)

They call it 'The Great Place' the same way your NCO calls a 20-mile ruck 'a short walk' — with confidence that borders on delusion and a straight face that dares you to disagree. 340 square miles of central Texas where the motor pool has its own microclimate, the formation area is large enough to qualify for its own zip code, and Killeen has four barbershops, six title loan stores, twelve vape shops, and absolutely no reason to exist beyond proximity to a gate that processes more vehicles per day than most international borders. You're three hours from Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, which means you're equidistant from three cities that all offer things Killeen cannot: culture, nightlife, and hope. The sun doesn't set here — it stares at you until you submit, and summer PT at 0500 is already 85 degrees because Texas doesn't believe in cool mornings. The post is so large that PCSing from one side to the other requires a GPS, a full tank, and emotional preparation. III Corps is headquartered here, which means the overhead is immense and the staff meetings are legendary in their length. Despite all this, the barbecue at local spots like Pit Boss and Franks is unironically excellent. The soldiers who love the Cav will die on this hill. Literally.

Nearest AirportKilleen-Fort Cavazos Regional (GRK) — 15 min (limited flights); Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) — 1 hr 15 min
HousingOn-post housing (Lendlease managed) is extensive but maintenance complaints are common. Off-post in Killeen and Harker Heights is very affordable — $900-$1,300 for a 3BR. Copperas Cove is quieter but farther from main gate.
SchoolsKilleen ISD is large but uneven — some schools are solid, others struggle. Many families choose Belton ISD or Copperas Cove ISD for better ratings. No DoDEA schools on post.
MedicalCarl R. Darnall Army Medical Center — full hospital. Wait times can be long due to post size. Scott & White in Temple (30 min) is an excellent civilian alternative.
Spouse EmploymentKilleen job market is limited and heavily military-dependent. Austin (1 hr) has a booming tech job market. Remote work is the most common path for professional spouses.
Commute / GatesMain gate (Clear Creek) backs up heavily at PT release and COB. Post is enormous — 15-20 min drives between unit areas are normal. T.J. Mills gate is less congested.
Local AreaKilleen is a military town through and through — functional but not charming. Harker Heights has better restaurants and shopping. The real draw is Austin — live music, food trucks, tech culture, and Barton Springs — but it is a solid hour away. The Hill Country between here and Austin is beautiful.
RecreationBelton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake · Dana Peak Park · Hunting and fishing on post · Austin live music scene (1 hr) · Tubing on the Guadalupe River (2 hrs)
