They call it 'The Great Place' the same way your NCO calls a 20-mile ruck 'a short walk' — with confidence that borders on delusion and a straight face that dares you to disagree. 340 square miles of central Texas where the motor pool has its own microclimate, the formation area is large enough to qualify for its own zip code, and Killeen has four barbershops, six title loan stores, twelve vape shops, and absolutely no reason to exist beyond proximity to a gate that processes more vehicles per day than most international borders. You're three hours from Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas, which means you're equidistant from three cities that all offer things Killeen cannot: culture, nightlife, and hope. The sun doesn't set here — it stares at you until you submit, and summer PT at 0500 is already 85 degrees because Texas doesn't believe in cool mornings. The post is so large that PCSing from one side to the other requires a GPS, a full tank, and emotional preparation. III Corps is headquartered here, which means the overhead is immense and the staff meetings are legendary in their length. Despite all this, the barbecue at local spots like Pit Boss and Franks is unironically excellent. The soldiers who love the Cav will die on this hill. Literally.
