The Honest MOS Read
Specialist 15Q is the rank where the cherry transitions into the position-certified controller of the section. By the time you pin SPC you are typically 24-36 months into your first enlistment and the facility chief has signed you off on multiple positions — Ground, Local, Flight Data, and (if RAPCON-equipped) Approach. You run a position through the worst rush of the shift and you train the cherry next to you without taking the headset off them. You are the controller the watch supervisor sends to the ATNAVICS site survey, the one who knows the LOAs cold, and the one who runs the AAR honestly after a deal (operational error) gets logged. If you are corporal-pinned under AR 600-8-19 chapter 4 (the discretionary lateral promotion that empowers a SPC with NCO-equivalent leadership authority within the section), you are writing initial counselings on the privates, you are the section's informal voice when the watch supervisor needs to know what the floor actually thinks, and you are responsible for a small training and qualification load for the cherries arriving from Novosel. The proficiency floor moves at this rank. As a cherry you were graded on whether you could read back a clearance and run Ground without a trainer over your shoulder; as a SPC you are graded on whether you can run a full position cycle through a weather event, sequence aircraft cleanly on Local during the morning departure rush, handle the MEDEVAC priority handling event from initial call through coordination with the receiving facility, and mentor a junior controller in the seat next to you without keying the mic for them. The facility chief and the watch supervisor are calibrating whether you can be trusted on Local Control during the IFR weather day, on Approach Control during the high-density training cycle if your facility is RAPCON-equipped, and on the radar approach (PAR / ASR / GCA) on the ATNAVICS if your unit is fielded with the deployable radar. That calibration is the leading indicator of when you get pulled for the senior-controller assignments and when you start the conversation about the watch supervisor track. The contractor tower handshake at the next ETS is real for an SPC who has the CTO, the position certifications, the FAA medical, and the clearance. The senior controllers in your facility are already on a first-name basis with the contractor tower next door; the conversation about your post-service path is one they are having quietly with the senior NCO bench and will offer to you when the timing is right. The 150A ATC and Airspace Management Technician warrant officer path is the technical career capstone for 15Q and the conversation typically starts at SPC, intensifies at SGT, and becomes a decision at SSG. The 150A is the warrant officer track for senior controllers — the technical authority on the airfield staff who designs airspace, defends the unit's ATC posture in higher-echelon planning conversations, runs the facility's standardization program, and serves as the brigade- or airfield-level ATC technical lead. The packet (DA Form 61, command recommendation, Aviation Selection Board file, board file documentation) is approachable at E-5 / E-6 with strong chain support and the right credential stack; selection rates move cycle to cycle per published HRC warrant officer accession board results. As a SPC the move is to research the path, understand the prerequisites, and start the conversation with the senior controllers and the unit warrant officers in the second half of the E-4 zone. The chain's recommendation is the leading indicator. The ATC and Airspace Management Technician Course is held at Fort Novosel (the Aviation Center of Excellence) under the 1st Aviation Brigade — the same installation where you did AIT, but a fundamentally different course. The 17C cyber reclass conversation is also realistic at this rank for the SPC who is showing technical depth and chain support, though the typical 15Q does not take this path because the FAA bridge and the 150A warrant track are both stronger career signals from this MOS. Common Screwups
  • ×Coasting on the SPC pay raise. The Army's biggest mistake-rate jump per AR 600-8-2 (flagging actions) tracks soldiers in the 24-36 month window — DUI, financial issues, off-post incidents. The clearance reinvestigation cycle catches more at SPC than at PFC, and the CTO and the FAA medical both ride on the clearance.
  • ×Skipping the BLC slot for a school or rotation that 'mattered more.' BLC is the STEP gate; without it, SPCs stay corporals until the slot drops, and the next slot may be 6-9 months out — which is 6-9 months on the wrong side of the SGT cutoff.
  • ×Letting the FAA prior-military hiring application file slide into year four. The SPCs who graduate the E-4 zone without ATSA sat and OPM application built are the SPCs whose post-service path narrows; the senior NCOs read the absence and the FAA bid window may close before the next opens.
  • ×Posting OPSEC-relevant material — flight times, callsigns, runway operations, taxiway pictures, IDS-4 / IFDS screens, sensor footage from the ATNAVICS — anywhere outside cleared channels. The brigade S-2 is one screenshot away from a counseling you cannot recover from, and the CTO and the clearance both ride on the AR 25-2 / AR 380-5 finding.

A Day in the Life

  • 0500Wake. Coffee. Phone check for overnight shift changes, equipment status from the watch supervisor, runway closures, anything that affects the day. PT uniform on.
  • 0530PT formation. The senior SPC takes accountability for any junior controllers in his small section (if Corporal-pinned or running a team-equivalent). Otherwise falls in with the platoon. PT is platoon-level standard.
  • 0545-0700Unit PT. The senior SPC sets the section's PT discipline by example. Run with the section, lift with the platoon, focus on the ACFT events that lag. The SPC who is above the company average gets pulled for the next school slot.
  • 0700-0900Hygiene, breakfast, change into OCPs. Walk to the company area or the airfield. The senior SPC typically arrives 15 minutes before first formation to clear the inbox, check overnight messages, review the watch supervisor's shift assignments for the day.
  • 0900First formation. The platoon sergeant gives the day's plan. The senior SPC briefs his junior controllers on shift assignments and additional-duty status; confirms accountability and uniform.
  • 0915-1130Position shift in the cab as a position-certified controller — Local during the morning departure push, Ground if the senior controller is on Local, Approach if the facility is RAPCON-equipped. Or simulator block, or position-certification evaluation for a cherry under your eye, or the watch supervisor's shift planning meeting for the next training cycle.
  • 1130-1300Chow. The senior SPC sits at the SPC / junior-NCO table with peers, not at the cherry table. The conversation at the table is the section's informal cross-talk — listen, contribute, do not dominate.
  • 1300-1500Afternoon position shift, or AAR from the morning shift, or the additional-duty rotation: ATNAVICS site survey support, simulator scheduling reconciliation, OPSEC training compliance tracking, training NCO bench work, FAA ATSA / OPM application file build, BLC packet review with the chain.
  • 1500-1630Final formation. The senior SPC briefs the section on the next day's plan. Sensitive items (cab access cards, secure radios if applicable, key control) checked in. Position-certification logbook entries logged for the day's currency hours.
  • 1630Released, most days. Watch schedules cycle through day, swing, and overnight shifts; the senior SPC rotates through all three with the rated controllers. Surge cycles and CTC rotations change the hour by hours or full shifts.
  • 1700-2000Personal time. Married SPCs: family time (BAH-with-dependents and the SPC pay scale make the income real). Single SPCs: gym, study (ATSA prep, college coursework on TA toward Aviation Management AAS, DLC modules, CLEP/DSST), social. The senior SPC is also the section's informal mentor for cherries — the after-hours phone call from a cherry with a question is the senior SPC's job to answer.
  • 2000-2200Wind down. The on-call rotation in some facilities pulls senior SPCs for unplanned shift coverage or ATNAVICS deployable support. Phone within reach during surge cycles.
  • 2200Lights out. Tomorrow starts at 0500.
  • Field rotation (JRTC / NTC / JMRC) / surge cycle / overnight shift blockThe senior SPC is on the deployable ATC site or in the cab on overnight cycles. The OC/T reads which sections handle the contingency tower posture and which do not. Overnight shifts cycle 2200-0600; sleep is on the day side of the rotation. A 14-day CTC rotation feels like 30.

Weekly Cadence

The week at SPC in an ATC facility runs on a heavier rhythm than the cherry week — more position-certification responsibility, more additional-duty load, more cherry-mentorship time, more BLC / ATSA / FAA-bridge-prep accountability. Monday is the heaviest planning day because the watch supervisor and the facility chief put out the week's shift schedule at Friday's release, but Monday morning is when the senior SPC catches up on what changed over the weekend — schedule changes, soldier issues, equipment status, supported-unit flight schedules. Expect the senior SPC to spend the first hour after first formation walking the section's shift assignments and additional duties with the section sergeant and the junior controllers. Tuesday and Wednesday are typically the position-shift-heavy days. The senior SPC is on Local or Approach (RAPCON-equipped) during the high-density rush cycles; the junior controllers are on Ground or Flight Data under his eye or running positions under direct supervision. The AAR after every shift — informal at the position, formal at the facility chief's level when a deal or a significant event happens — is the section's institutional memory. The senior SPC's role is to model AAR-honesty for the cherries — admit your own misses before you call out anyone else's. Thursday is often the simulator-heavy day, the company-level training day, or the senior-NCO professional-development block the SPCs observe from the back of the room. Friday is the company-level event (PT, awards formation, 1SG inspection, motor pool, gear cleanup) and release. The week's other rhythm is the cert-stack and career-decision build. ATSA prep in the off-duty hours (the SPC who has not scheduled the ATSA by mid-E-4 is the SPC the senior NCOs read on). College coursework on Tuition Assistance — the Aviation Management AAS or a related associates is the standard play, and the credits compound on the DA 3355 worksheet ceiling. DLC modules through Level II into Level III. BLC packet build and slot tracking. The 150A warrant officer conversation with the senior warrant officers in the unit; the FAA prior-military hiring application file build on OPM USAJobs. CTC rotations deploy the unit's ATNAVICS forward and collapse this rhythm — when the company is in a train-up, garrison time is for the harder simulator blocks that prep the section for contingency tower operations.

  1. 01
    Work Local Control or Radar Approach Control during a weather event or a high-density rush — IFR sequencing, missed-approach handling, MEDEVAC priority handling, lost-comm procedures from memory.
    The IFR weather day is the position-certified SPC's calling card. Sequencing aircraft on Local through an IFR push requires the controller to hold the airfield picture in his head while the radio runs and the strips update — three aircraft on final, one on the runway, two on the missed-approach hold, one inbound from the adjacent TRACON, all in the right separation. Drill the sequencing patterns in the simulator with the watch supervisor calling the scenarios cold; build the missed-approach handling procedure from memory because the call has to happen in under three seconds when the pilot declares. The MEDEVAC priority handling event runs through JO 7110.65 chapter on emergency handling — clear the airspace, separate the conflict, coordinate with the receiving facility, document the event for the facility chief's morning brief.

    Run a coordinated radar approach (PAR / ASR / GCA) on the ATNAVICS if your unit is fielded with it — talk an aircraft down the glide path to a safe landing on a no-comm or partial-comm day.
    GCA (Ground Controlled Approach) is the deployable radar's signature capability — the controller talks the pilot down the glide path with continuous heading and altitude corrections through final touchdown. The procedure is in JO 7110.65 chapter on radar arrival procedures and the platform-specific operator manual for the AN/TPN-31 ATNAVICS. Drill the GCA scan pattern in the simulator until the verbal patter is automatic — 'on glide path, on course, four miles from touchdown, perform landing check.' The GCA is the procedure the deployable ATC mission lives for, and the SPC who can run a clean GCA under degraded conditions is the SPC the senior NCOs put on the ATNAVICS site survey list.

    Translate the supported aviation unit's daily flight schedule into a sequencing plan that the next controller on shift can pick up cold — the boring 80% of ATC.
    Every supported aviation unit at your airfield publishes a daily flight schedule (or weekly, depending on the unit) listing departure times, mission profiles, return times, and fuel / armament requirements. The senior controller's job is to translate that schedule into a position-specific sequencing plan — which aircraft fly which approach, which holding fix gets used when the schedule slips, how the FARP turnaround integrates into the runway flow. Sit with the supported unit's air mission cell during garrison time, walk their operations cycle, read their flight schedule like a tactical plan rather than a list. The watch supervisor reads which SPCs translate cleanly and which leave the next shift to figure it out.
  4. 04
    Train a cherry in the seat — checklist discipline, scan pattern, phraseology brevity, AAR honesty — without keying the mic for them.
    Training the cherry is the senior SPC's leadership entry point. The hardest skill is not keying the mic when the cherry is struggling — every time you key the mic, you teach the cherry to wait for you to key the mic. Talk the cherry through the procedure, point at the strip or the IDS-4, ask the question that walks him to the right answer. The senior controllers in your section who trained you well are the model; the senior controllers who did not are the cautionary tale. The watch supervisor and the facility chief read which SPCs train cleanly — that read is the leading indicator of the watch supervisor track and the senior-NCO promotion track.

    Operate the facility during a degraded condition — radar out, radio out, frequency change, IDS-4 failure — recognize, declare, execute the playbook, do not panic and do not cover.
    Degraded operations are the events where the senior controllers are graded most carefully. The radar failure on the RAPCON, the primary radio out on Tower, the IDS-4 / IFDS hard down, the loss of the crash phone direct line — these are the events that test the controller's composure and the facility's contingency procedures. The procedure: recognize the degradation (system indicators, missing data, controller verbal report), declare to the watch supervisor immediately ('Tower lost primary radio, switching to backup'), execute the facility's contingency playbook (the facility directive has a chapter; read it), document the event in the watch log for the facility chief's morning review. The SPC who has practiced contingency procedures during slow shifts is the SPC the watch supervisor names for the high-visibility shift cycles.

    Begin building your FAA prior-military hiring packet — 14 CFR Part 65 paperwork, the FAA Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA), the OPM USAJobs application file, and your documented controlling hours.
    The FAA prior-military hiring application file is the senior SPC's career-build project. Pull your AIT records, your CTO certificate, your position-certification documentation, and your documented controlling hours into a permanent civilian-portable file (digital and physical copies, both). Schedule the ATSA at an FAA-approved testing center — verify the current ATSA structure and the prior-military lane through the FAA Mission Support Services published guidance, because the test structure has shifted year over year. Build the OPM USAJobs application file with your military experience translated into FAA-readable language (controlling hours, position certifications, operational events handled). Confirm your Class III FAA medical (or the Army-equivalent flight-status physical) is current.   • FAA Order JO 7110.65 — Air Traffic Control (you brief from it now, not just consume it)
    At SPC you no longer just read the Order — you brief the cherry on it, you defend procedure choices against it during the standardization shop's quarterly review, and you reference it when the facility chief asks why your shift handled a deal a particular way. The chapters on terminal control (3), IFR (4), radar (5), and visual (7) are the spine of your daily work; the chapter on emergency handling (chapter 10) is the one you live in during the events that matter.
  • FAA Order JO 7110.10 — Flight Services; FAA Order JO 7400.10 — Special Use Airspace
    JO 7110.10 governs the flight services functions your facility supports (pre-flight briefings, flight plan processing, NOTAM dissemination). JO 7400.10 governs the special use airspace structures around your airfield — restricted areas, prohibited areas, military operations areas (MOAs), warning areas — and the procedural specifics for coordinating activity in and out of them. At SPC you are now coordinating SUA activity for the supported aviation units; reading JO 7400.10 chapter on SUA scheduling and coordination is no longer optional.

    TERPS is the standard the Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs) you sequence aircraft to were built against. Reading TERPS once gives you the language to understand why the localizer approach to runway 13 has the minima it has, why the missed-approach point sits where it sits, why the holding pattern at the IAF is the size it is. The senior controllers who can speak TERPS fluently are the ones the pilots actually trust when the weather drops.

    ATP 3-04.94 is the Army doctrine that overlays JO 7110.65 with the tactical environment, the Army airfield context, and the deployable ATC mission.     The facility directive and the LOAs with adjacent agencies (FAA TRACON, ARTCC, supported aviation units, joint/coalition users) are the operational governance documents the facility chief and the watch supervisor quote when a seam gets weird. At SPC you defend procedure choices against the LOAs during deal investigations; the LOA with the adjacent FAA TRACON is the document that resolves every Class D / Class B/C boundary dispute. Read the LOAs every quarter; tab the paragraphs the watch supervisor quotes most often.

Standards — How to Hit Each

  • Full facility certification — every operating position signed off with currency hours logged accurately in the facility logbook.
    Full facility certification at SPC is the floor. The position-certification cycle for each position (Ground, Local, Flight Data, Approach if RAPCON-equipped) is structured against ATP 3-04.94 and the facility directive — over-the-shoulder hours, oral and practical evaluation, signature from the facility chief or his designee. Currency hours are logged in the facility's training plan documentation; lapses in currency remove you from the position until the hours are rebuilt. Drive the conversation with the watch supervisor — request the evaluation, do the oral, sit the practical. The SPC who waits passively is the SPC who is still in cherry-status on a position at month 30.
