15Q AIT at Fort Novosel (renamed from Fort Rucker in 2023) runs you through the FAA-equivalent Initial Entry Course under the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and the 1st Aviation Brigade. You graduate with the FAA Control Tower Operator (CTO) certificate under 14 CFR Part 65 — the federal credential, not a unit credential — but Part 65 currency is position-specific: the CTO is your ticket to TRAIN at a facility, not to work the position alone. The first six to twelve months at your gaining airfield are a second, longer, harder qualification cycle to earn position certification (Ground, Local, Flight Data, and Approach if RAPCON-equipped). Sit second-position with a rated controller and read back every transmission in your head before you key the mic. The community is small and the watch tape is forever.

A Day in the Life
- 0500Wake. Coffee. Phone check for any shift-related text from the watch supervisor — schedule change, equipment status, runway closure overnight, anything that affects the day. None? Good. PT uniform on.
- 0530PT formation in the company area. The platoon takes accountability. As a cherry you fall in with the line — the cab is climate-controlled but the formation is Soldier-standard, and the senior NCOs read who shows up squared away.
- 0545-0700Unit PT. The platoon rotates through cardio, strength, and recovery days. As a cherry you run with the platoon; the tower cab is no excuse for falling out of a formation run. The senior controllers read who PTs and who does not.
- 0700-0900Hygiene, breakfast at the DFAC or in the barracks, change into OCPs. Walk to the airfield or the company area depending on the day. The cab opens early — first formation typically at 0900, shift handover at the position depending on the watch schedule.
- 0900First formation. The platoon sergeant gives the day's announcements, shift assignments, additional duties. You confirm where you are reporting — tower cab for shift, simulator block, ground school, ATNAVICS support detail, or motor pool / detail rotation.
- 0915-1130Position shift in the cab, or simulator block, or ground school. On shift: read the open-strip board, take the position relief briefing, sit second-position with a rated controller on Ground or Flight Data, run the ATIS cycle, work the strips, listen to the radio, learn the airfield rhythm. In the sim: ATC scenarios at varying traffic densities, emergency procedures, runway incursion drills. In ground school: JO 7110.65 study, ATP 3-04.94 review, facility directive memorization.
- 1130-1300Chow. Cherries sit where the senior controller tells them to sit. The conversation at the table is the section's informal cross-talk — listen more than you talk. The senior controllers will trade reads on the morning's shift; pay attention.
- 1300-1500Afternoon position shift, or AAR from the morning shift, or the additional-duty rotation (ATNAVICS support, simulator scheduling assist, OPSEC training compliance, IT/cyber awareness module completion, CTO paperwork organization).
- 1500-1630Final formation. The platoon sergeant or senior NCO gives the next day's plan. Sensitive items (cab access cards, secure radios if applicable, key control) checked in. Position-certification logbook entries logged for any over-the-shoulder hours.
- 1630Released. Most days. Watch schedules cycle through day shift, swing shift, and overnight shift in most ATC facilities; the cherry rotates through all three over the first several months. The facility runs 24 hours when the airfield is open 24 hours.
- 1700-2000Personal time. Married cherries: family time (BAH-with-dependents at CAB or airfield stations is real income). Single cherries in the barracks: gym, study (JO 7110.65 chapter review, ATSA prep, CLEP/DSST, correspondence DLC, college coursework on Tuition Assistance), social. The FAA bridge prep window is the off-duty hours.

- 01Run the local airfield ground control position to FAA JO 7110.65 (Air Traffic Control) and the unit's facility directive — taxi clearances, hold-short instructions, position relief briefings, the cab reads the way the schoolhouse trained you.Sit second-position with a rated controller for the full first month and read back every transmission in your head before he keys the mic. The transmissions become rhythmic; the rhythm is the safety net. Memorize the airfield's taxiway diagram — every taxiway designator, every hot spot, every intersection where pilots habitually get confused. The phraseology is in JO 7110.65 chapter 5 (Radar) and chapter 7 (Visual) and the facility's LOA with the adjacent agency. Memorize the handoff format for each direction at your facility — 'Approach, Tower, hand off Cessna 12345, runway one-three, four-mile final' — and confirm receipt before releasing the aircraft from your control. The cherry who skips the confirmation step is the cherry who passes an aircraft to nobody and the supervisor catches the gap. The LOA with the adjacent agency (TRACON, Center, the supported CAB's air mission cell) is the document that resolves every seam dispute — read it during slow shifts.

Standards — How to Hit Each
- FAA Control Tower Operator (CTO) certificate — earned at AIT under 14 CFR Part 65, and maintained by current position experience at the facility.The CTO is the federal credential you walk away from AIT with — a 14 CFR Part 65 airman certificate from the FAA. Once issued, the certificate is permanent (unlike a medical, which expires), but Part 65 currency is position-specific: the FAA recognizes you as a current controller only at facilities where you are actively position-certified. Your unit's standardization shop maintains the local position-certification documentation; the FAA recognizes the document under the prior-military hiring rules at ETS. - ATC company at a Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) — the default first assignmentThe most common first assignment for an enlisted 15Q under current Army force structure. The CAB ATC company supports the brigade's organic airfield (Cairns at Novosel, Hood AAF at Cavazos, Hunter AAF, Wheeler AAF in Hawaii, the airfield at Campbell / Drum / Stewart / Carson / JBLM / Wiesbaden) and the deployable mission with the ATNAVICS. Cherries assigned to a high-traffic Army airfield see more position cycles per shift, earn position certifications faster on volume of opportunity, and graduate to senior-controller proficiency on a faster timeline than cherries at lower-volume facilities. The watch supervisor and facility chief at a high-volume Army airfield have a deeper bench; the senior NCO mentorship is structured.
- RAPCON-equipped facility (radar approach control co-located with the Army airfield)Some Army airfields are RAPCON-equipped — they operate a radar approach control facility co-located with the tower cab, handling IFR sequencing and the surrounding terminal radar coverage in addition to tower work. RAPCON facilities certify controllers across tower positions (Ground, Local, Flight Data) and radar positions (Approach, Departure, sometimes Final / GCA). The position-certification cycle is longer at a RAPCON-equipped facility because there are more positions to certify on. The career payoff: a 15Q from a RAPCON facility brings broader experience to the FAA hire conversation and to the senior-controller track.
