Eglin is 724 square miles of Florida panhandle where the Air Force tests things that go boom against a backdrop of Emerald Coast beaches that belong on a screensaver — sugar-white sand, water so clear it looks photoshopped, and a coastline that regularly ranks among the best in America. The 96th Test Wing breaks stuff professionally: munitions testing, weapons development, and R&D that makes defense contractors' eyes light up and Congressional budgets weep. Destin is right there being gorgeous with fresh-off-the-boat seafood (Harbor Boardwalk grouper sandwiches will ruin you for landlocked duty stations) while you're stuck in a test briefing until 1800 reviewing data on a weapon system you can't discuss at the bar afterward. Every Eglin Airman has said 'I live on the Emerald Coast' to someone from Cannon AFB with absolutely zero shame, and the look on the Cannon Airman's face is a war crime in itself. The base is so enormous — literally the largest Air Force installation in the Western world — that you will get lost on your way to anything, and the drive from one end to the other requires a full tank and a snack.
