The largest Air Force base in the world. On the Gulf Coast.
Eglin AFB is the largest Air Force installation in the world by land area — 724 square miles of northwest Florida woodland and Gulf Coast. Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, and Destin form the surrounding community, collectively known as the "Emerald Coast." The Gulf of Mexico is 15 minutes from the main gate. The beaches here — white quartz sand, emerald water — are among the finest in the country.
The Emerald Coast has evolved from a quiet military community into one of Florida's premier resort destinations, which means housing costs have risen dramatically but the quality of life remains exceptional. Pensacola is 45 miles west. Panama City Beach is 60 miles east. The region is also home to Hurlburt Field (AFSOC), making it one of the more special-operations-dense communities in the US.

The Fish Shak (Fort Walton Beach)
"Gulf seafood without the tourist markup."
A local favorite doing fresh Gulf seafood — amberjack, grouper, Gulf shrimp, oysters — without the Destin Harbor pricing premium. The fried Gulf shrimp plate is the anchor.
McGuire's Irish Pub (Destin / Pensacola)
"A Gulf Coast institution with 1 million signed dollar bills on the ceiling."
McGuire's has been a Gulf Coast institution since 1977 — a massive Irish pub with steaks, a house-brewed Guinness-style stout, and a ceiling plastered with over 1 million signed dollar bills. The Senate Bean Soup (made from a historic Senate recipe) and the steak are the anchors.
The Destin location has a smaller crowd than Pensacola. Go on a weekday.
Outdoor
Get outside. The land around military installations is usually the best reason to be there.
Destin Snorkeling & Fishing Charters
"The Gulf is productive here. World-class fishing 10 miles offshore."
The Destin Harbor is one of the most active charter fishing ports in the country — deep water approaches within 10 miles of shore, and species diversity (amberjack, red snapper, grouper, cobia) is exceptional. Snorkeling charters to the jetties and nearshore reefs run year-round.

Air Force Armament Museum (Eglin)
"The only museum dedicated to Air Force armament. Free."
Adjacent to Eglin's main gate, the Air Force Armament Museum traces the history of air-delivered weapons from WWI to the present — actual aircraft, bomb displays, and the development history of precision-guided munitions.

Destin Beach / Henderson Beach State Park
"Destin's best public beach. 30 acres of preserved white sand."
Henderson Beach State Park protects 30 acres of undeveloped Destin beachfront — the same white quartz sand and emerald water as the resorts, without the resort prices. Camping available. The snorkeling around the jetties at the harbor mouth is excellent.
Day Trips
When you need to remember there's a world outside the gate.
"Naval Aviation Museum, historic district, and Gulf Islands National Seashore."
The National Naval Aviation Museum (largest in the world, free), Fort Pickens (where Geronimo was imprisoned), and the Gulf Islands National Seashore beaches are all within 45 miles.
Hurlburt Field (AFSOC) is co-located with Mary Esther — the communities blend. AFSOC and Eglin service members mix significantly.
Red snapper season (usually June–July) is a Gulf Coast cultural event. Charter a boat.
The Fort Walton Beach Friday Night Market (summer) is the best local community event.
Niceville is the quiet, family-friendly part of the community — better schools, lower prices than Destin.
The Destin Harbor Boardwalk has good restaurants but the prices track the real estate.
The Emerald Coast has been discovered. Housing prices have risen sharply. The tourist economy has made local services more expensive. Budget accordingly — this is a desirable assignment that has priced itself to match.
