Can you join the military with Gender dysphoria?
Disqualifying unless an 18-month stability certification is provided. This is the rule as written in Change 2 (April 2021). Service-specific implementation policy has shifted multiple times since 2017 and is sensitive to administration changes — verify the current implementation policy with a recruiter before relying on the 18-month rule alone.

What the regulation actually says (§5.28.t)
History of gender dysphoria is disqualifying unless, as certified by a licensed mental health provider, the applicant has been stable without clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning for 18 months.

What the recruiter says vs. what's true
The myth you'll hear
“The policy keeps changing so just see what happens at MEPS.”
The truth
The DoDI text is stable; the implementing service policy is what changes. Get current implementing-policy guidance before MEPS — do not rely on what worked for someone in a different year.
Documentation you'll need
- Mental health provider certification of 18-month stability
- Full mental health and any transition-related medical records
