The Honest MOS Read
You are a Petty Officer Third Class, and the crow on your sleeve means the QA inspector holds your maintenance documentation to a technician standard, not an apprentice standard. The work center you supported as an AMAN is now the work center you contribute to as a qualified airframer, and the AMAN in your shop are watching how you carry the gear — because they become what they watch.
The job at AM3 is the actual airframes work. You own a section — hydraulics, landing gear and brakes, flight controls, or structures and corrosion control, depending on your squadron and your NEC — and you do the repair under the AM2 or AM1's supervision. You rig and adjust flight control surfaces to the platform MIM. You troubleshoot and repair hydraulic system faults from the schematic. You service, inspect, and replace landing gear, brake, and pneumatic components. You fabricate and install structural repairs to the NAVAIR structural repair standard. In a VFA you might be chasing a hydraulic leak on an F/A-18F or rigging a stabilator; in a VAQ you are working the airframe and gear on the EA-18G; in a VP or HSM shop you are servicing struts and flight controls on a P-8A or MH-60R. The procedure is in the MIM, the standard is in the NAMP, and your job is to follow both and document both, in that order.
The operational check is the line between a repair and a guess. Rigging a flight control surface is not done when the rig pins come out — it is done when the operational check proves the surface moves exactly the way the NATOPS says it should, through the full throw, in the right direction, without binding at the stops. Returning a hydraulic system to service is not done when you replace the suspect component — it is done when you have bled the air out and proven the leak is gone with the applicable operational check. The AM2 who trained you knew that the operational check is where the airframer earns the safe-for-flight signature. The AM3 who signs the rig off without the full check is the AM3 whose mis-rig the aircrew discovers airborne. That is how mishap boards start.
Safety-of-flight (SOF) downgrade coding is the most consequential documentation skill at AM3. When a write-up involves a system that affects the aircraft's ability to fly safely — flight controls, the hydraulic systems that drive them, landing gear and brakes, the structure itself — the downgrade code you assign helps determine whether that aircraft is authorized to fly with the known condition or whether it is grounded. The wrong SOF code means an aircraft flies with a limitation the aircrew does not know about. The mishap board will not accept 'I was not sure what code to use' as a defense. Ask the AM2 before you assign a SOF code on any write-up you are not certain about; the ask takes thirty seconds and the wrong code can kill an aviator.
Corrosion control does not stop being your problem when you make AM3 — it becomes a program you run in your section instead of a job you do under supervision. You track the recurring areas, you prep for the phase inspection, and you keep the section's corrosion findings trending down. The corrosion you faked as an AMAN was a panel; the corrosion program you let slide as an AM3 is a trend the QA office briefs and the LCPO owns. The salt air does not negotiate, and the airframe you keep ahead of the corrosion is the airframe that does not develop a structural crack on a det.
The NWAE for AM2 is on your horizon. The Navy Enlisted Advancement System Final Multiple Score combines exam score, eEVALs, time-in-rate, awards, and education into the number that competes for the AM2 slate. The Bibliography for Advancement (BIB) for the current AM2 cycle is the test and the test is the BIB — pull it from MyNavyHR / NETC and build a forty-five-to-sixty-minute daily study plan. Navy COOL is real money at this rank: the FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate pathway is in reach for the AM3 thinking about the post-service market, and your hands-on airframe time is building the experience that pathway requires. Common Screwups
- ×Signing a flight control rig safe-for-flight without the full operational check, because the rig 'looked right' and the schedule was tight. A mis-rigged surface that you signed is the discrepancy the aircrew discovers airborne and the maintenance record the mishap board reads with your initials in it.
- ×Signing off a corrective action you did not personally perform or directly observe. Co-signing a job you witnessed is legitimate; signing for a job you only heard about from a peer is a fraudulent maintenance entry. One JAGMAN investigation for fraudulent records at AM3 ends the career.
- ×Assigning the wrong SOF downgrade code because the right answer was unclear and asking felt like admitting ignorance. The aircraft that flies with an incorrect SOF code is a mishap that started at the bench. Ask the AM2 — that ask is not ignorance, it is the correct use of the chain on a safety-critical decision.
- ×NJP or DUI. At AM3 the career impact compounds — advancement flag, eEVAL damage, NEC pipeline closed, clearance reviewed. An alcohol-related NJP at this tier is the single most common career-shortening event in the AM rate.

A Day in the Life
- 0500-0600Wake up. Duty section phone check for overnight discrepancies. PT gear on — squadron or personal PT before report. If the flight schedule launches early, the line is already turning and the airframes shop may be needed before quarters.
- 0600-0700Command PT or shop PT. The AM3 sets the example now — the AMAN watch whether the petty officer falls out of the run. PRT Good Medium is the floor; Good High is points on the FMS.
- 0700-0800Hygiene, chow, into coveralls. Pre-quarters: review the maintenance plan, check the section's open discrepancies and the corrosion program status, line up PQS sign-offs you owe your AMAN today.
- 0800-0830Quarters. The LCPO or LPO puts out the plan of the day; the AM3 takes his section's tasking and is ready to brief the AM2 on where his open jobs stand. The petty officer voice is expected at the section huddle, not the apprentice silence.
- 0830-1130Section work: rig and adjust a flight control surface, troubleshoot a hydraulic leak from the schematic, service landing gear, or fabricate a structural repair — the actual airframes job, under AM2 supervision. Run the operational check before anything gets signed safe-for-flight. Document the corrective action clean enough for QA to close without a callback.
- 1130-1230Chow with the other AM3s and AMAN. Quick check of the section tool sub-account before stepping away — every tool accounted for, nothing left open in a bay.
- 1230-1500Afternoon block. Continue the morning's repairs, run SOF write-ups through the QA chain, walk PQS line items with the AMAN as the qualified witness, update the corrosion program tracking. If a jet writes up a flight control or hydraulic gripe on the deck with a flight inside two hours, this block becomes a flight-line scramble and the AM2 may put you on it.
- 1500-1600NWAE study block when the schedule allows. Forty-five to sixty minutes on the current AM2 BIB. The LPO who sees the AM3 with the BIB open during slow time approves study time on the next watch rotation.

- 1800-2100Personal time. Single AM3 in the barracks or married with BAH off-base. Gym, NWAE BIB study at the kitchen table, FAA A&P research, NEC packet work, personal admin.
- 2100-2200Prep for tomorrow — open jobs reviewed, PQS sign-offs lined up, any parts status checked so the morning does not start behind. The AM2 who texts at 2130 about tomorrow's plan expects a clean answer, not 'I will check in the morning.'
- 2200Lights out. Tomorrow at 0500.
- Deployment / detachment tempoEmbarked on the carrier or on a shore det. The AM3 is a working repair hand on twelve-to-fourteen-hour days against the flight schedule, fixing flight control, hydraulic, gear, and structural gripes to get the airframe up for the next launch. The operational check and the FOD discipline matter more under surge, not less. The salt works the airframe around the clock and the corrosion program does not pause for ops tempo.
Weekly Cadence
The Mon-Fri rhythm for an AM3 in a fleet squadron runs on the maintenance production cycle and the flight schedule, with the added weight that the AM3 now owns a section of the work and a piece of the documentation that carries his signature. Monday is the heaviest planning day — the maintenance plan publishes after the weekend stand-down, the LPO assigns the week's tasking, and the AM3 spends the morning understanding his section's open discrepancies, the corrosion program status, and which jobs have a flight-schedule deadline. Monday is also when the tool sub-account and the calibrated equipment get reconciled coming off the weekend.
Tuesday through Thursday are the working core. Flight operations run, write-ups come off the deck, and the airframes shop works at the tempo the schedule demands — a flight control rig, a hydraulic leak, a gear servicing, a structural repair, a corrosion find. As an AM3 you own the repair under the AM2's eye, run the operational check, code the SOF write-ups, and document the corrective action clean for QA. This is also where your AMAN get PQS line items signed — when you have thirty minutes between jobs and the binder is open. Thursday usually carries the maintenance officer or department readiness sync; the AM3 is not in the meeting, but the section's QA rework rate, aircraft-in-commission contribution, and corrosion trend are reflected in the numbers the AM1 or AM2 briefs, and a clean section makes the AM2 look good in front of the maintenance officer.
Friday is plan-of-the-week-out and any readiness checks the LPO runs before liberty. The flight schedule collapses this whole rhythm during carrier air wing work-up, pre-deployment training, and sustained surge ops, and expands it during stand-down and post-deployment maintenance periods. Stand-down is the AM3's window for NWAE study, NEC packet work, and getting the AMAN's PQS caught up — longer shop hours without the flight-schedule scramble. The AM3 who uses stand-down to study and to mentor is the one who walks into the AM2 cycle with a documented log and a section that runs clean; the one who coasts shows up to the slate cold and watches it go by.

After the repair, bleed the air out of the system per the MIM and run the operational check to prove the system is solid and the leak is gone. Brake wear, tire condition, and gear sequencing are inspected against the wear limits and the MRC, not against what looks worn enough to swap. The gear-down-and-locked check is run per the procedure because a gear that does not lock is a landing nobody walks away from clean. Document the corrective action and the operational-check result so QA can close it without a callback and the next inspector can read exactly what was serviced and to what limit.
- 04Fabricate and install a structural repair to the NAVAIR structural repair standard — correct material, correct rivet pattern, correct edge distance — and document it so the next inspector can read what was done.The repair is governed by NAVAIR 01-1A-1 and the platform structural repair manual, not by what the parts bin had on hand. Verify the material and temper match the call-out, lay out the rivet pattern and the edge distance to the standard, and drill and install to the spec — edge distance and rivet pitch are not eyeballed, because a repair installed short of edge distance cracks at the fastener under load. - Signing a flight control rig safe-for-flight without personally completing the full operational check.A surface that moves the wrong way, binds at the stops, or does not reach full throw is a safety-of-flight failure the aircrew discovers airborne — at the worst possible moment to discover it. The mishap board reads the maintenance record, finds your initials on the rig and the safe-for-flight signature, and asks why the operational check did not catch what the aircrew did. There is no version of a mis-rigged flight control where the signature does not matter.
