Radio Equipment Repairer
E-7 (Sergeant First Class) · Army
Sergeant First Class is the rank where the Army stops running you through a school every two years and starts running you through assignment slates. You are the senior 94E NCO advising the signal company commander on the entire BCT radio and COMSEC repair posture, or you are the platoon sergeant for the BCT FSC maintenance platoon — 30-40 soldiers, four NCOERs per cycle, COMSEC custodian or supervising the custodian, the brigade CCRI / CORA inspection on the calendar. The Master Leader Course (MLC) is the STEP gate for E-8; the centralized HRC MSG / 1SG board is the next paper-record review. The senior signal warrant in the brigade is naming the 948B / 948D bench out of your platoon and you are the SFC who produces the candidates — or you are the SFC who explains why the brigade's warrant accession rate is zero.
- 01E-7 pin-on (post-SLC, post-centralized HRC 94E SFC board selection).
- 02Platoon Sergeant assumption — BCT FSC maintenance platoon or senior 94E NCO in the signal company.
- 03Brigade COMSEC custodian or alternate custodian appointment letter on file.
- 04Career broadening: Drill Sergeant (24 months at 94E AIT / Signal School), TRADOC instructor at NCO Academy, JRTC / NTC senior O/C/T, DISA / JCSE joint-duty senior NCO billet, or staff senior NCO at brigade / division.
- 05Master Leader Course (MLC) — 14 academic days, NCOLCoE Fort Bliss. STEP gate for E-8.
- 06948B / 948D warrant accession pipeline producing 1+ selected candidate every other year from the platoon.
- 07Centralized HRC MSG / 1SG board — paper review of ERB/SRB.
- 08E-8 pin-on if selected: 1SG track (signal company / FSC senior NCO) or MSG staff track (brigade S-6 NCOIC, division-level senior 94E NCO, JRTC/NTC senior O/C/T).
- ×Phoning the career-broadening assignment. Drill Sergeant at the Signal School, TRADOC instructor at the NCO Academy, JRTC/NTC senior O/C/T, DISA / JCSE joint-duty — these are CSM-tracked. Declining them without compelling reason narrows the next assignment slate and the senior signal warrant's read of the SFC.
- ×Missing MLC. No MSG pin-on without it; slot availability tightens as the year-group moves into the promotion zone. MLC packets need to be in 6-12 months before MSG-board eligibility.
- ×Counseling drift on SSG section sergeants. The SFC's job is partly NCOER-writing for the next generation of senior 94E NCOs; sloppy NCOER narratives propagate up to the centralized board's read of you AND down through your SSGs' careers and the platoon's reputation.
- ×DUI / Article 15 / fraternization findings — terminal for HRC MSG / 1SG board competitiveness and CSM-track 1SG consideration. The 94E community is smaller than the combat-arms slates; the read propagates faster.
- ×Underestimating the COMSEC posture as platoon sergeant. A CAT-1 COMSEC finding traced to the platoon sergeant during a brigade CCRI / CORA inspection brings ARCYBER into the conversation and is structurally a relievable incident for the SFC even before the brigade CSM has to call the conversation.
A Day in the Life
- 0500Wake. PT uniform on. Phone check — overnight platoon emergencies. Soldier arrested? COMSEC discrepancy from CQ? Family emergency in the platoon? Deadlined platform the BCT XO wants on the net before the 0700 staff call? You handle inside the platoon first; the 1SG and the signal OIC hear it as you walk into formation.
- 0530PT formation. Your three SSG section sergeants take accountability of their sections; you take accountability of the platoon and report to the signal company 1SG. The brigade CSM walks the formation occasionally; he reads the platoon by reading the SFC.
- 0545-0700Unit PT. The platoon runs its plan within the signal company's plan. You walk the formation, check on the soldier you flagged at last week's sensing session with the SSGs, adjust the plan if Tuesday's NET schedule pushed and you need to recover the bench afternoons.
- 0700-0900Hygiene, breakfast, change uniforms. You spend 20 minutes with the signal OIC and the 1SG in the orderly room — back-brief, calendar review, the day's priorities, the deadlined items the BCT XO is reading at his BUB.
- 0900First formation. The signal OIC briefs the day's tasks; you stand behind him. Your SSGs translate the OIC's intent to their sections within 5 minutes of formation release. You verify they did it correctly during the morning walk-around.
- 0915-1130Battalion / brigade-level work. You are in the BN TOC for the daily BUB, at brigade range control coordinating the next platoon forward maintenance push, in the brigade COMSEC vault doing the alternate-custodian inventory, in the orderly room with the 1SG and the signal OIC reviewing NCOER drafts, or at brigade HQ for the senior signal warrant's monthly synch with the SFC platoon sergeants.
- 1130-1300Chow. You eat with the company senior NCOs — the 1SG, the platoon sergeants of the other platoons in the signal company, the senior signal warrant when he's in the office. Conversation is brigade-level: training, slates, board prep, climate, the 948B/D bench, the next force-modernization fielding.
- 1300-1500Afternoon work. NCOER drafting (four per cycle, you are mentoring your SSGs through writing theirs and writing your own on your SSGs). Platoon-level coordination with the signal OIC and the BCT XO on the radio-fleet readiness slide. School-packet review for your SSGs. 948B / 948D packet review with the senior signal warrant on the bench-track SSGs.
- 1500-1630Final formation. The signal OIC briefs the next day; you brief platoon-level adjustments; your SSGs brief their sections. Sensitive items. Two-person integrity inventory on the COMSEC vault. End-of-day GCSS-Army close-out.
- 1630-1730Platoon release. You stay 30-60 minutes for AAR with the signal OIC and the 1SG, sometimes with the brigade COMSEC manager if there was a brigade-level COMSEC event. The SFC who closes out the day with the OIC every evening is the SFC whose OIC does not surprise the BCT XO.
- 1730-2000Personal time. Married SFCs: family. Single SFCs: gym, study, MLC packet build, board prep, FCC GROL study, the IPC trainer-certification pathway if pursuing the instructor credential. If you are 12-18 months out from MLC, you are running the packet workflow. If you are 18-24 months out from the centralized MSG / 1SG board, you are reviewing past board results and bullet patterns.
- 2000-2200Counseling cycle, NCOER drafting, evening check-ins with the SSGs. If a SSG in the platoon called with a problem (financial, marital, legal, soldier-in-crisis), you are on the phone or in his office. The SFC's after-hours job is real.
- 2200Lights out.
- Field rotationThe clock collapses. You are running the platoon as the senior 94E NCO forward — forward maintenance push to a brigade CP, COMSEC handling forward at battalion CPs, evacuation routing back to sustainment-level. Sleep in 2-3 hour shifts. The OC/T evaluator at JRTC / NTC is writing the brigade's maintenance-and-signal-lane grade. The MSG / 1SG slate reads the rotation rating.
Weekly Cadence
Key Skills — How to Drill Each
- 01Build a quarterly training plan that survives contact with the BCT S3 calendar — IPC re-cert windows, platform new-equipment training (NET), COMSEC handler updates, certification cycle alignment, ESD discipline revalidation, brigade-level forward maintenance push training. The platoon's QTB input rolls up to the company, then to battalion, then to brigade. Build the next 90 days in a single document — METL tasks for the platoon, training events scheduled (IPC re-cert windows for each SSG-led section, NET cycles for force-modernization fieldings, COMSEC handler training cycles, TMDE-user training cycles), resources (bench time, TMDE calibration windows, range time if the platoon supports a brigade-level forward maintenance push, transportation for evacuations to Tobyhanna or the CECOM regional activity), risks, contingencies. Brief the signal company OIC on Tuesday; brief the 1SG on Wednesday; the battalion locks the training schedule Friday. The SFC whose plan survives without major revision is the SFC whose platoon is the brigade's preferred unit on the slate.
- 02Write four NCOERs per cycle that the signal company senior rater can defend at the brigade NCOER review.Four NCOERs per cycle means four SSG section-sergeant stories, each told in action-result-impact bullets. Senior rater (the signal company commander or 1SG) reviews each at brigade level. The SFC who writes inflated bullets gets called on it; the SFC who writes thin bullets gets the SSGs underrated and the brigade CSM's read of the platoon's bench narrows. Best practice: write the bullet during the rated event ('SSG X led the BCT-wide COMSEC handler re-training event 14-18 March 2026, certified 47 soldiers across the BCT, zero CCRI inspection findings on COMSEC handling during May 2026 brigade inspection') and edit at quarterly counseling, not at NCOER drafting. The senior signal warrant in the brigade also reads the platoon's NCOERs; the 948B / 948D-bench candidates surface here.
- 03Defend a brigade-level CCRI / CORA inspection on the COMSEC and CCI maintenance side — auditable safe-handling, TPI logs, two-person integrity, zeroize procedures, sustainment-level evacuation routing. The Command Cyber Readiness Inspection (CCRI) and the Command Cyber Operational Readiness Assessment (CORA) are the brigade-level cybersecurity / COMSEC inspections that propagate up to ARCYBER. As SFC platoon sergeant you own the platoon's piece of the inspection scope — the COMSEC vault TPI logs, the daily inventory discipline, the COMSEC handler training currency, the CCI hand-receipt accountability, the zeroize-on-transfer procedures, the sustainment-level evacuation routing for CCI items. Build the inspection-prep cadence as a weekly walk-through rather than a pre-inspection scramble; the senior signal warrant and the brigade COMSEC manager are your reach-back. A clean CCRI / CORA in your tenure is the bar; a CAT-1 finding traced to the platoon sergeant is a relievable incident.
- 04Mentor three SSG section sergeants into SFC-board-ready candidates and identify the two privates who could carry a 948B / 948D warrant packet in five years. Each SSG gets quarterly counseling with a development objective tied to the SFC-board profile — SLC packet completion, school-slot stack (Drill Sergeant tour, NCO Academy instructor, JRTC/NTC O/C/T), NCOER bullet quality, ACFT score, COMSEC custodian appointment letter on file, section-level QTB defense quality, force-modernization fielding execution. The SFC who graduates two SSGs to SFC-promotable in 24 months is the SFC the brigade fights for at the next slate. While doing this, you are also building your own MLC packet and your own NCOER profile for the centralized 1SG / MSG board. Identify the two junior soldiers (PFC/SPC) with the technical depth and the leadership wiring to carry a 948B / 948D packet in five years; flag them to the senior signal warrant; build the development plan with their SSGs.
- 05Run sustainment-level coordination with Tobyhanna Army Depot, AMC LARs (Logistics Assistance Representatives), and the Theater Sustainment Command — what stays at field level, what evacuates, what gets a controlled substitution.AR 750-1 governs the controlled-substitution authorization process and the field-level / sustainment-level boundary. The LAR from CECOM is your reach-back contact for technical assistance on complex faults and for evacuation routing decisions. Tobyhanna Army Depot is the AMC subordinate command for electronics sustainment; the depot's intake / repair / return cycle has a real timeline you brief into the brigade's deadline-recovery plan. The SFC platoon sergeant who builds the evacuation-routing SOP into the platoon's daily rhythm is the SFC whose deadlined platforms come back on schedule; the SFC who treats sustainment-level routing as a one-off is the SFC whose CCI radios sit in the section waiting on paperwork.
- 06Operate as the senior 94E NCO on a CTC rotation — JRTC, NTC, JMRC — forward maintenance push, COMSEC handling forward, evacuation back to sustainment-level, the whole arc.The CTC rotation is the brigade's external evaluation; the OC/T evaluator at the maintenance and signal lane writes the brigade's grade. As senior 94E NCO forward you run the forward maintenance push — bench location, parts pre-positioning, COMSEC handling forward at battalion CPs (TPI maintained under field conditions, log discipline at audit standard, the same as garrison), evacuation routing for items the forward push cannot repair, integration with the BCT signal officer and the BCT XO on radio-fleet readiness reporting during the rotation. The CTC rotation rating that the OC/T writes is the brigade's read of the SFC; the MSG / 1SG slate at the next board reads the rotation rating.
Manuals & References — What Chapters Matter
- AR 750-1 — Army Materiel Maintenance Policy + AR 700-138 — Army Logistics Readiness and Sustainability.AR 750-1 owns the field-level vs sustainment-level structure, the controlled-substitution process, the work-order discipline standards. AR 700-138 owns the readiness-reporting standards. The SFC platoon sergeant signs the platoon-level input to the unit status report off both regs. Re-read both at every assignment transition; the structure occasionally moves.
- AR 25-2 — Army Cybersecurity + AR 380-40 — Safeguarding and Controlling COMSEC Material + AR 380-5 — Department of the Army Information Security Program + TB 380-41 — COMSEC Material Safeguarding Procedures.Four regs that govern the cybersecurity and COMSEC posture of the platoon. AR 25-2 is the cybersecurity umbrella. AR 380-40 is the COMSEC reg. AR 380-5 is the broader information-security reg the COMSEC custodian works under. TB 380-41 is the procedural detail for COMSEC custodian work — daily inventories, two-person integrity, zeroize procedures. The CCRI / CORA team and the brigade COMSEC manager cite all four; the SFC owns the platoon's compliance.
- AR 600-20 — Army Command Policy + AR 600-8-19 — Enlisted Promotions and Reductions + AR 623-3 — Evaluation Reporting System. You enforce AR 600-20 at platoon level — chapter 7 (SHARP), chapter 4 (EO), chapter 5 (anti-extremism), chapter 6 (military justice). Your name is on every initial incident report at the platoon level. AR 600-8-19 covers the promotion-point system for E-5/E-6 (still applies to your SSG and below). AR 623-3 is the NCOER reg cover-to-cover — you write four per cycle.
- ATP 6-02.40 — Techniques for Visual Information Operations + ATP 6-02.71 — Techniques for Department of the Army Information Network Operations + FM 6-02 — Signal Support to Operations.FM 6-02 is the operational doctrine for what the platoon's work delivers. ATP 6-02.71 is the techniques doctrine for the network the platoon supports. ATP 6-02.40 covers adjacent signal-support functions. The SFC platoon sergeant should be able to brief the platoon's role inside the brigade signal architecture without referring to notes.
- DA PAM 600-25 — U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Guide + AR 350-1 — Army Training and Leader Development.DA PAM 600-25 is the career map you brief your bench from — the school-slot stack, the institutional-credential progression, the assignment-slate ladder for the 94 career field. AR 350-1 governs the training-event approval workflow and the broader training enterprise. Both end up in the SSG section-sergeants' development conversations.
- HRC Warrant Officer Recruiting guidance for 948B / 948D + ATP 6-22 series — Counseling, Team Building, Mission Command. The HRC Warrant Officer Recruiting guidance for 948B (Land Combat Electronic Missile Systems Maintenance) and 948D (Electronics Systems Maintenance) packets is the procedural anchor for the bench-building responsibility. The senior signal warrant in the brigade is the entry mentor; the HRC guidance is the source-of-truth for packet structure, board timing, and selection rates. ATP 6-22 series — ATP 6-22.1 (Counseling), ATP 6-22.6 (Team Building), ATP 6-22.5 (Mission Command at the team and crew level) — is the leadership doctrine you teach the SSGs from.
Standards — How to Hit Each
- SLC graduate; MLC packet built — required for E-8 board competitiveness.SLC was the SSG-to-SFC gate; MLC is the SFC-to-MSG gate. MLC is 14 academic days at the U.S. Army NCO Leadership Center of Excellence (NCOLCoE) at Fort Bliss. Slot pipeline through the brigade S3 / battalion S3 channels. Packet (DA 4187, ATRRS) goes in 6-12 months before you become MSG-board eligible. Slots compress when the year-group moves into the promotion zone.
- Brigade-level CCRI / CORA inspection passed with no senior-NCO-attributable findings on COMSEC handling or CCI maintenance during your tenure. The CCRI / CORA team and the brigade COMSEC manager audit the platoon's COMSEC posture on a recurring cycle. Build the inspection-prep discipline as a weekly walk-through with the SSG section sergeants: TPI logs current, two-person integrity discipline observable, COMSEC handler training currency at 100%, sustainment-level evacuation routing documented in the SOP, zeroize-on-transfer procedures rehearsed. A CAT-3 administrative finding is recoverable; a CAT-1 finding is structurally a relievable incident at the SFC level.
- Platoon ACFT pass rate at or above 95%; your personal ACFT is on the brigade slide.Platoon-level ACFT pass rate is the brigade-level slide the BCT CG reads. Build the platoon PT plan around the bottom-quartile soldiers; the SFC who turns a 480 ACFT soldier into a 540 ACFT soldier is the SFC who hits 95%. The line companies do not get to treat the maintenance platoon as the soft-MOS shop; the SFC who keeps the ACFT pass rate above the signal-company average is the SFC who deflects that conversation before it starts.
- 948B / 948D Electronic Systems Maintenance Technician warrant pipeline producing at least one selected candidate every other year out of your platoon. The senior signal warrant in the brigade is naming the candidates; the SFC platoon sergeant is producing the bench. Identify two SSGs per cycle who have the technical depth, the leadership wiring, and the career-arc fit for the warrant track. Mentor through the packet (DA 61, DA 62, technical proficiency packet, senior NCO and senior warrant endorsement letters); coordinate timing with HRC Warrant Officer Recruiting. The SFC who graduates one selected 948B/D every other year is the SFC the brigade CSM names on the 1SG slate.
- NCOER profile clean and defensible at brigade — Top Block / Most Qualified rate consistent with which of your rated NCOs actually got selected.Senior raters at brigade level read every NCOER. The SFC whose Top Block / Most Qualified rate is inflated (more SSGs rated 'Most Qualified' than the platoon actually performed at) gets the credibility hit. The SFC whose rate is honest gets the senior rater's defense at the next slate. The brigade CSM and the senior signal warrant track which of the SFC's rated SSGs actually pin SFC at the next board; the alignment between the NCOER profile and the board outcome is the senior-rater-credibility metric.
Technical Mistakes — Concrete Consequences
- Letting one section sergeant drift on COMSEC inventory because you trust him. That is the section the brigade IG visits and the relief is at brigade level. The CCRI / CORA finding propagates to ARCYBER. The SFC platoon sergeant is the senior NCO of record on the platoon's COMSEC posture; the brigade COMSEC manager and the brigade CSM do not protect a SFC through a CAT-1 COMSEC finding. The fix is monthly walk-throughs by the SFC, not annual; the SSGs respond to what the SFC inspects.
- Confusing being tight with the signal company OIC with being aligned with him.Tight means you talk daily; aligned means the platoon executes the OIC's intent without surprise. The platoon needs you to push back honestly, in private, when a maintenance priority is wrong — and to walk out aligned in public. The SFC who is tight but not aligned is the SFC whose OIC walks into a BCT XO conversation without knowing the platoon's actual posture. The OIC eventually finds out; the next NCOER profile reflects the gap.
- Skipping the 948B / 948D conversation with the SSG who has the talent. The Army Warrant Officer Cohort for electronic systems maintenance is one of the most consequential technical pipelines in the force; the senior signal warrant is naming the bench and the SFC platoon sergeant is supposed to produce candidates. The SFC who does not have a 948B/D packet in flight three years into the platoon-sergeant tour is the SFC whose senior signal warrant relationship cools — and the brigade CSM hears about the gap at the next 1SG-slate conversation.
- Hiding a CAT-1 COMSEC finding from the brigade S6 / signal OIC to 'fix it before the report.'It surfaces at brigade and the relief lands on the SFC, not the soldier. The CCRI / CORA team's audit trail is independent of the unit's internal-correction timeline; ARCYBER reads the original finding regardless of the brigade's internal fix. The cover-up is materially worse than the original finding; the SFC's tenure as platoon sergeant ends the day the brigade S6 reads the audit log that did not match the report.
- Going to the brigade CSM around your 1SG / signal OIC chain. You will be wrong and you will be relieved. The 1SG and the signal OIC are in the chain for a reason; the brigade CSM does not break the chain on a SFC's complaint. The SFC who goes around the chain loses both the 1SG and the brigade CSM in the same week — and the senior signal warrant's read of the SFC narrows permanently.
Career Decisions at This Rank
- Career-broadening assignment (Drill Sergeant at the Signal School, TRADOC instructor at the NCO Academy, JRTC/NTC senior O/C/T, DISA / JCSE joint-duty senior NCO).These are CSM-tracked, 24-36 month assignments. Drill Sergeant (X4 ASI) at the 94E AIT (Signal School at Fort Eisenhower) is the most visible institutional credential to the MSG / 1SG board. TRADOC instructor at the NCO Academy is the in-MOS broadening. JRTC / NTC senior O/C/T for the maintenance and signal lane is the external-evaluator role. DISA / JCSE joint-duty senior NCO is the joint-duty credential the senior-NCO development model now formally values. The decision: do the tour at SFC (early career inflection) or wait for MSG (post-board reward). For 94E, the institutional credentials carry less weight on the senior-NCO slate than they do on the combat-arms slates, but the SDA pay and the centralized board's read of the credential are still real. Most successful 94E senior NCOs did at least one career-broadening tour at SFC.
- First Sergeant track vs. Master Sergeant ops track.1SG (E-8 with the diamond) is the most consequential E-8 fork — signal company 1SG, BCT FSC 1SG, HHC of a signal battalion / Sustainment Brigade. MSG ops track is the parallel staff path — brigade S-6 NCOIC, division-level senior 94E NCO, JRTC / NTC senior O/C/T, theater signal command senior NCO. Both are valid; the slate at the centralized E-8 board reads paper for both. The decision: are you a leader (1SG) or a planner (MSG ops)? The CSM names the bench for each; if the brigade CSM has named you for the 1SG diamond, work toward it.
- 948B / 948D Electronic Systems Maintenance Technician warrant packet — last viable window. For most 94E senior NCOs the 948B / 948D warrant packet decision is structurally at SSG / early SFC; by mid-SFC the time investment and the career-arc inflection make the packet harder to absorb. If the senior signal warrant is still naming you for the bench at this point, the conversation is honest — do you want SF-equivalent technical leadership through the warrant chain (948B/D), or senior-NCO leadership through the SFC / MSG / 1SG / SGM trajectory? The decision shapes the next 10-15 years of the career; talk to the senior signal warrants in the brigade and the senior 94E NCOs on the 1SG track before locking the path.
- Retirement timing — 20-year mark vs. continue to 24-30.At SFC with 14-18 years TIS, the 20-year retirement is 2-6 years away. Under BRS the multiplier is 2.0% per year (40% at 20 years), with the TSP match offsetting some of the difference. The continuation pay window at 12 years is past you; the next financial inflection is the retirement decision at 20. The math: stay for 24-30 (full benefits, MSG / SGM pin-on potential, post-service VA / clearance value compounded) or retire at 20 (immediate post-service market, defense-electronics-contractor / federal-civil-service career on day one). The 94E post-service market is materially strong at this rank — Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Tobyhanna Army Depot federal civil service. Run the math with a financial counselor; the variables are real either way.
- Post-service market timing — defense electronics industry / federal civil service / Tobyhanna Army Depot.Senior 94E NCOs with IPC J-STD-001 + IPC-A-610 + FCC GROL + Secret clearance + a clean record are valuable to the defense electronics industry on day one out the gate. Companies hiring at this profile: Raytheon (RTX), Lockheed Martin, L3Harris (the prime on much of the AN/PRC line), Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Sierra Nevada, Leonardo DRS, and the long tail of DoD electronics contractors. Federal civil service (GS-9 to GS-13 Electronics Technician / Electronics Mechanic series — GS-856, GS-2604) is the parallel path; Tobyhanna Army Depot is the geographic and institutional center of gravity. The decision is timing: stay for MSG / 1SG / SGM (higher retirement, longer wait for market) or transition at SFC (full pension at 20, immediate market value). Most successful post-service careers were planned 24-36 months before the transition.
How the Seat Varies by Unit Type
- BCT FSC Maintenance Platoon SFC (10th MTN, 25th ID, 82nd ABN, 101st AAB, 1AD, 1ID, 3ID, 4ID, 1CD)The BCT FSC maintenance platoon SFC runs the field-level electronics maintenance for the BCT. JRTC / NTC is the home rotation. The signal OIC and the BCT signal officer (S6) are your primary customers; the BN-level battalions are the second-tier customer. The platoon's CTC rotation rating on the maintenance and signal lane is the brigade CSM's read of the SFC.
- Signal Company / Signal Network Support Company SFC (BCT-organic signal company, division signal battalion, theater signal brigade)The BCT signal company or division signal battalion 94E SFC runs the senior 94E NCO role for the signal company's electronics maintenance support to the tactical network. The OPTEMPO is the network-support cycle. The platform mix tilts more toward the senior radio platforms (AN/PRC-117G/F/M, HMS Manpack family, SATCOM ground terminals) and the consolidated brigade COMSEC vault. The senior signal warrant is more visible at brigade level on this track; the 1SG slate progression typically flows toward signal company 1SG rather than FSC 1SG.
- Sustainment Brigade / CSSB Electronics Maintenance Company SFC (the sustainment-cycle pathway)The Sustainment Brigade / CSSB-aligned electronics maintenance company SFC runs the senior 94E NCO role for a section that performs deeper field-level repairs than the BCT FSC can support. Platform mix is broader (radio fleet from supported BCTs across the division, theater-asset COMSEC devices, the more complex SATCOM and EW ground terminals). The OPTEMPO is the sustainment-cycle rhythm. The 1SG slate progression flows toward sustainment company 1SG or HHC of the Sustainment Brigade / CSSB.
- TRADOC Senior Cadre SFC (94E AIT at the Signal School / Fort Eisenhower, NCO Academy senior cadre)TRADOC senior cadre at the 94E AIT or the NCO Academy at Fort Eisenhower is a 24-36 month senior-NCO development tour. The OPTEMPO during AIT cycles is brutal but predictable (16-hour days during cycles, dwell between cycles). The institutional credential (X4 Drill Sergeant ASI for OSUT instructors, the NCO Academy cadre identifier for NCO Academy instructors) is the visible career signal. Most senior 94E NCOs did at least one TRADOC tour by the time they pinned MSG; the schoolhouse network is the senior 94E community.
- Joint Duty Senior NCO SFC (DISA, JCSE, USCYBERCOM, the joint-electronic-systems senior NCO billets)The joint-duty senior 94E NCO billets at DISA (Defense Information Systems Agency), JCSE (Joint Communications Support Element), USCYBERCOM, and the various joint-electronic-systems billets are real and structurally career-shaping. The OPTEMPO is the joint-staff rhythm; the platform mix is broader than the Army-organic platform mix (joint-asset SATCOM, joint COMSEC programs, joint-electronics-modernization initiatives). The joint-duty credential the senior-NCO development model formally values now is visible on the senior-NCO slate.
