You are the junior of two 18Es on a 12-man ODA. The senior comm sergeant runs the shop; you run the daily ground truth and the next deployment's package. The relationship with him is the most consequential professional relationship of your SF career to date — he is the soldier whose seat you will inherit, and his read of you flows into every school slot and every NCOER. The COMSEC binder is your career. Mishandling COMSEC is not a technical mistake; it is a career-ending exposure to the Espionage Act and the SF community has zero institutional tolerance for it.

The Honest MOS Read
Sergeant 18E on an ODA is the rank where the daily work of the SF communications sergeant actually starts. You graduated SFQC, pinned the Long Tab and the Green Beret, came off the Q-Course with SGT chevrons (or pinned shortly after via BLC and the STEP gate under AR 600-8-19), and PCS'd to one of the seven Special Forces Groups. You joined a Group, a battalion, a company, and an ODA — the 12-man Operational Detachment Alpha that is the SF formation. You are the junior of two 18Es on that team. The ODA you joined is built around the standard structure documented in FM 3-18: 18A (captain, team leader), 180A (warrant officer, assistant team leader and the team's institutional memory across captains rotating in and out), 18Z (E-7 / E-8 team sergeant — the senior enlisted on the team and the soldier whose authority on the ODA is functionally peer to the team leader's), 18F (E-6 / E-7 intelligence sergeant), 18B weapons sergeants ×2 (typically one senior E-6/7 and one junior E-5/6), 18C engineer sergeants ×2, 18D medical sergeants ×2, and 18E communications sergeants ×2. The 18Es are the team's signal section. The senior 18E (typically a SSG / E-6) runs the team's comms shop end-to-end. You are the junior — and the team is built so that the junior owns the daily ground truth while the senior runs the architecture. What you actually do day-to-day: you build, test, and validate the team's communication package end-to-end for every training event, ISOFAC isolation, and operational deployment. You write the comm annex of the team OPORD. You run the team's communications portion of pre-mission training (PMT) — the unit-level rehearsal program before a deployment. You stand up the team's NIPR / SIPR forward node when the team deploys, and you spend a non-trivial amount of time at the battalion S6 fighting for spectrum, frequencies, satellite access, and crypto. In the field you carry a Manpack plus a fighting load and you are the only soldier on the team who can rebuild a downed link at 0300 with a multimeter and a hand-drawn antenna. The technical depth at this rank is real. HF voice and data across hundreds of kilometers using NVIS in-theater (the horizontal dipole at low height that puts your signal nearly straight up to bounce off the F-layer and come down in a 100-500 km footprint) and skywave between continents (the higher-takeoff-angle antenna for DX). SATCOM TACSAT on the AN/PRC-117G and AN/PRC-155 — satellite access requests, antenna alignment, link budget calculation, fallback plans when the bird is unavailable. Forward NIPR / SIPR — VSAT or commercial SATCOM uplink, TACLANE family inline encryption (KG-175 series for IP, KG-250 for serial — the boundary between the satellite uplink and the team-side network), Cisco / current switch and router, STIG posture against the ARCYBER scan, the IAVA closure cycle that the brigade S6 and the Group signal staff audit. COMSEC custodian duties at the team level per AR 380-40 — sign-for, key load with KIK-20 or KOV-21, two-person integrity on every transaction, destruction with documentation, audit prep against the Group cryptologic services office (CMS / current equivalent). The leadership content at SGT 18E is different from a line BCT SGT but not absent. You do not lead a 4-soldier fire team in the conventional sense — the ODA does not have fire teams; it has functional pairs (the two 18Es work together; the two 18Bs work together; etc.). What you do have is responsibility for the team's communications training. Every soldier on the ODA is cross-trained on user-level comms — the 18Bs, 18Cs, 18Ds, 18F, and even the 180A and 18Z need to be able to operate HF voice, do basic position reporting, and troubleshoot common radio issues. You are the instructor of record for the team's cross-training program on comms. You teach the team. You also write monthly DA 4856 counselings on yourself and contribute to NCOER input under your senior 18E's eye, and you run the COMSEC binder under his supervision. The senior 18E is your most consequential professional relationship at this rank. He is the comm sergeant whose seat you will inherit two-to-four years from now. The team is structured so the junior learns the seat from the senior; the senior teaches the junior the architecture, the spectrum-management fight, the COMSEC custodian process, the ARCYBER audit prep, the Group signal SOP, the partner-force interoperability problem. You are absorbing his judgment in real time. Take notes. Ask questions. The conversations happen in the team room over coffee, on the antenna farm during PMCS, in the comm cage when you are troubleshooting a downed radio at 2200. The reports-to chain: you report to the senior 18E for technical work, to the team sergeant (18Z) for everything else. The team sergeant runs the ODA. He writes your NCOER (with senior 18E input and team leader senior rater input). His read of you at hour 200 of a CTC rotation or a real-world deployment sets the next two years of your career — school slots, language pipeline, the ALC packet, and the slate for the next senior 18E billet. He does not yell; he does not have to. He notes things and the next school slot reflects the note. The ALC packet is the next STEP gate. Advanced Leader Course at the Signal NCO Academy at Fort Eisenhower (renamed from Fort Gordon in 2023, the Cyber Center of Excellence) is the SSG gate under STEP. The 18-series ALC content draws from the standard signal MOS curriculum plus SF-specific blocks. Slot allocation runs through Group's training office. Most 18Es push the ALC packet in their first 24 months at SGT; the team sergeant nominates and the Group SGM signs off. The financial and family reality at SGT 18E is unique in the Army. The OPTEMPO of an SF ODA is high — Group dependent, but most active-component ODAs run a deployment cycle of roughly 6 months deployed, 6-12 months in train-up / sustainment cycle, with rolling pre-mission training events that take you forward for shorter windows. The SOF leave / family rhythm is built around that — long deployments with high-tempo recovery; the team sergeant respects family time when the calendar allows but the calendar drives the day. BAH-with-dependents at SGT in most SFG locations (Fort Liberty, Fort Campbell, JBLM, Fort Carson) supports off-post housing and a real family life if the spouse is on board. The marriages that survive the SF career are the marriages where the spouse understands the OPTEMPO before the soldier signed up for it; the marriages that do not survive typically end inside the first deployment cycle after pinning the MOS.

Common Screwups
  • ×Mishandling COMSEC — leaving key tape in a vehicle, skipping two-person integrity, missing a destruction signature, taking classified key material outside an authorized container, allowing an uncleared person near the COMSEC binder. CAREER-ENDING. The CI investigation that follows ends the SF career, not just the assignment. Espionage Act exposure is the legal worst case even for negligent handling. AR 380-40 is not a guideline; it is the floor.
  • ×Skipping the monthly counseling on yourself or your team's junior soldiers. AR 623-3 requires it, NCOERs reference it, and the team sergeant's read of your NCO development is based partly on whether the paperwork chain is built.
  • ×DUI / drug pop / off-duty incident — separation under AR 635-200, clearance revocation cascade, end of the SF career. SF holds soldiers to a higher conduct standard than the conventional force because the mission set requires the clearance and the trust. There is no recovery path inside the SF community.
  • ×Posting unit, location, partner-force, or kit on social media. OSINT collection against ODAs is real and run by adversary services. The team will read you out; the company will not back you; the next deployment manifest may not include your name; the senior 18E slot you were on the slate for goes to someone else.
  • ×Reenlisting without reading the current HRC SRB MILPER. SRB tier and dollar amount for 18-series move year over year. The wrong contract terms (zone, MOS-specific multiplier, duty station options) lock you in for years. Talk to the career counselor at Group; pull the current MILPER; do not sign on a Friday afternoon.

A Day in the Life

  • 0500Wake. Coffee. Phone check for overnight alerts — any unit-level alerts from the team room, any tasking from Group, any IAVA notifications on the team's forward-node baseline. SF teams in garrison run looser than line BCTs but the SGT 18E in the on-call rotation is the soldier the senior 18E pages when something breaks at 0300.
  • 0530-0700PT. Individual or small-group at the team's standard. The ODA does not run formation PT the way a BCT does — the team trains against a team-level standard with individual responsibility. The senior NCO at the gym at 0530 reads the team's young NCOs by who shows. Mix of ruck, run, lift, swim, mobility. The 600 ACFT does not earn the slot but the 480 loses it.
  • 0700-0830Hygiene, chow, change uniforms. The team room is the work space and the senior NCO conversation happens there. SF teams in garrison wear OCPs or the unit-authorized variant; the team's comm cage is where the gear lives.
  • 0830-0900Team room — informal stand-up. The team sergeant walks the day's priorities; the team leader sets the week's direction; the senior 18E hands you the comm-section work. Your day's work threads through: team training (you run the comms portion), the next deployment's PMT (you build the comm package), the COMSEC binder (you maintain it), the forward-node configuration (you patch and validate it), and whatever Group-level signal coordination the senior 18E delegates.
  • 0900-1200Technical work. Daily checks on the AN/PRC-117G stack, the AN/PRC-148 MBITRs, the AN/PRC-150C Harris Falcon-series HF, the AN/PRC-155 Manpack two-channel, and whatever current Manpack the team is fielding. Battery health, fill status, cable integrity, antenna stockpile. The senior 18E is teaching you the senior tasks — PACE planning depth, spectrum management fights, COMSEC custodian process, ARCYBER audit prep. You are absorbing his judgment in real time.
  • 1200-1300Chow. The team eats together when the schedule allows because the team-dynamic conversations happen there. Some teams have a small fridge / microwave in the team room; some go to the company chow hall; some go off-post depending on the post and the team's habit.
  • 1300-1500Cross-training. You run the comms portion of the team's cross-training program — the 18Bs and 18Cs and 18Ds rotate through user-level HF voice, position reporting, and basic troubleshooting under your instruction. The 18Ds run TCCC sustainment for the team in another block. The 18F runs intel awareness. The 18B weapons sergeants run weapons handling. Every soldier on the ODA cross-trains every MOS — that is the SF model.
  • 1500-1700Working group / company-level coordination. The senior 18E goes to the company comm working group; you sometimes go with him as the junior. Battalion S6 frequency-management fights, Group signal SOP updates, ARCYBER FRAGO implementation, partner-force comm interoperability planning for the next rotation. You are learning the language of senior signal management at the SF level by listening.
  • 1700-1900Released. Sometimes. The team sergeant respects soldier time when the calendar allows but the training calendar drives the day. Personal time goes to: language sustainment (the team's allocated time plus your own), cert study (Security+ if you do not have it, CCNA / CySA+ / cloud architect if you do), gym (individual against team standard), family (married soldiers go home; the BAH-with-dependents at SGT supports off-post housing near most SFGs).
  • 1900-2200Language study, cert study, reading FM 3-18 / ADP 3-05 / the team's intel products on the AO. Married soldiers are with family; single soldiers are at the team house, the gym, or out with the team. The senior NCOs above are reading your habits — the soldier who studies the AO every night before deployment is the soldier the team sergeant trusts with the partner-force coordination on rotation.
  • ISOFAC isolation rotationThe team locks down for mission planning. You are the comm-package lead under the senior 18E's eye. Every PACE plan, every antenna build, every COMSEC load, every forward-node configuration is rehearsed and validated. Sleep happens when the OPORD allows. The senior 18E signs off your draft before it goes to the team leader; the team sergeant signs off the rehearsal validation; the team leader briefs the supported commander. ISOFAC days run 14-18 hours; the team comes out of isolation with a validated package and a signed-off plan.
  • Forward deployment / training rotationForward — at a partner-nation training site, a SOTF FOB, a forward operating location. The team is operating; you are running the daily comms. NIPR/SIPR forward stays up overnight; HF NVIS sustains the link to higher; SATCOM TACSAT runs on the schedule; COMSEC is loaded and rotated per AR 380-40. The senior 18E covers part of the night; you cover part of it. The team's mission depends on the link. The clock collapses; sleep is in 4-hour blocks; the rotation feels like double its calendar length.

Weekly Cadence

The week at junior 18E on an ODA runs on two parallel rhythms: the technical work the team needs and the senior 18E relationship that is teaching you the seat. Monday is typically the team's planning day — the team leader walks the week's training, the team sergeant hands out the tasks, the senior 18E briefs you on the comm work the team needs through the week. The senior 18E will hand you the harder pieces and tell you to bring him the draft before it goes to the team leader. Bring him the draft early; he will catch the gaps before the team sergeant or the team leader does, and the team learns to trust your work through the iteration. Tuesday through Thursday are the technical and training days. The team runs its METL through cross-training (you are the instructor of record for the comms portion), shooting (the team standard at the range is higher than the conventional Army — Expert on every weapon system the team fields), demolitions (you run the antenna farm so the team has comms during the demo training), medical (TCCC sustainment under the 18Ds), and language (the team's allocated language sustainment time). Your work as the junior 18E threads through all of it. You are also building the next deployment's comm package — the PACE plan, the antenna inventory, the COMSEC short list, the forward-node configuration — under the senior 18E's eye. ISOFAC isolation, when it lands, takes a full week or more out of the routine and replaces it with mission planning. Friday is typically administrative — counseling sessions, NCOER input cycles, school packet building (the team sergeant works the ALC packet with you and works the senior 18E's SLC packet in parallel), Group / battalion-level admin. The team sergeant may release early or run a hard Friday training event depending on the calendar. SF teams in train-up cycles work weekends; SF teams between rotations may have weekends free. The OPTEMPO of the SFG you joined drives the cadence — 1st SFG with Pacific orientation runs different from 3rd / 7th with Africa / South America, runs different from 5th with CENTCOM, runs different from 10th with EUCOM, runs different from the Guard groups (19th, 20th). The week's other rhythm at the junior 18E rank is the senior 18E relationship. You are looking at the seat you will inherit. He is the comm sergeant; you are the comm sergeant in training. The conversations happen everywhere — team room coffee, antenna farm PMCS, the comm cage at 2200 when you are troubleshooting a downed radio, the back porch of the team house on a Friday evening. Take notes. Ask questions. Watch how he handles the battalion S6 fight; watch how he handles the COMSEC audit; watch how he handles the partner-force comm guy when the language barrier is real. His judgment is what you are absorbing. The team is built on this transfer. The week's third rhythm is the cert stack and the language pipeline. Security+ is the IAT-II floor; CCNA is the depth networking credential; CySA+ is the cyber-analyst layer; cloud architect-level certs build the post-service market. Use ACA aggressively across multiple fiscal years. The DLPT cycle is annual; track the test date and prep for it deliberately. The senior 18E's language is on the team's deployability slide; yours is behind his and the senior NCOs above are reading the trend.

Key Skills — How to Drill Each

  1. 01
    Lead the team's comm package design — PACE for every mission set (DA, SR, FID, UW, CT) and for every COA — and brief it to the team leader and team sergeant without notes.
    The senior 18E will check your work but he expects the draft. Build the PACE plan around what actually works at the AO; rehearse the transitions during ISOFAC. The four legs of PACE (Primary / Alternate / Contingency / Emergency) get briefed for each of voice, data, and position reporting — and each leg names a specific system, freq, and procedure. Brief the comm annex in the team OPORD from a one-page tactical comms overlay with the antenna locations, the freq plan, the satellite access window, and the COMSEC short-list. The team leader will repeat your brief to the SOTF planner if you build it right.

    Run an HF voice/data link across hundreds of kilometers using NVIS in-theater and skywave between continents, with a frequency plan tied to the diurnal cycle and a published fallback.
    NVIS for in-theater: horizontal dipole strung at roughly 0.15-0.25 wavelength above the ground, fed in the middle, oriented broadside to the target. The signal radiates nearly straight up, hits the F-layer, and comes back down in a 100-500 km radius regardless of terrain. Frequency selection: 3-10 MHz range typically, with the band shifting between night (lower MUF — Maximum Usable Frequency) and day (higher MUF). Skywave for DX: higher antenna, lower takeoff angle, higher band (10-30 MHz daytime). Build a day/night/twilight freq plan; have ALE (Automatic Link Establishment) configured on the AN/PRC-150C for the AOR. Test the link before the team needs it.
  3. 03
    Stand up and sustain a SATCOM TACSAT package on AN/PRC-117G / AN/PRC-155 — satellite access request, antenna alignment, link budget, fallback if the bird is unavailable.
    Satellite access is a finite resource. You request access through the supported COCOM's satellite access authority (typically through the joint spectrum management process) with the freq, the satellite identifier, the access window, the user identifier, and the mission. You get an assignment back. Configure the radio for the assigned satellite (different sats have different uplink/downlink freqs and access procedures). Align the antenna by azimuth and elevation (the SATCOM antenna is directional). Verify the link budget — power output vs path loss vs receive sensitivity. Plan a fallback: HF NVIS to a forward HF receiver, or commercial Iridium / Inmarsat if the team is authorized.
  4. 04
    Build and defend a forward NIPR / SIPR node — VSAT or commercial SATCOM, Cisco / current switch and router, TACLANE-family inline encryption, basic patch and STIG posture, with the brigade S6 audit in mind.
    The forward node is the team's IT footprint downrange. VSAT terminal with hub access (Group's signal staff arranges the hub side); TACLANE KG-175 series (current models KG-175A, KG-175D, KG-175G for IP traffic) between the satellite modem and the team-side network; current Cisco switch and router (or unit-issue equivalent); workstations running the unit's standard image. Patch the workstations against the current IAVA list; run STIG Viewer or the current automated STIG-checking tool to validate the posture; document the configuration in a build book. The ARCYBER scan or the brigade S6 audit will compare your build against AR 25-2 baselines. Pull the Security+ voucher early; you need IAT-II to be the named soldier on the node.
  5. 05
    Train the rest of the ODA on user-level comms — every team member cross-trained on HF voice, position reporting, and basic radio troubleshooting. You are the instructor of record.
    Build a comms cross-training program: one block on user-level HF voice (PRC-150C menu navigation, key fill, channel switch, basic antenna deployment), one block on user-level position reporting (the team's position-reporting format, the radio used, the schedule), one block on basic troubleshooting (the most common 3-5 radio issues and the immediate-action procedures). The 18Bs, 18Cs, 18Ds, and even the 18Z and 180A need to be able to do the basics if you and the senior 18E are unavailable. Run the training quarterly or before every deployment. The team's confidence in their comms package depends on whether every soldier can operate the basics.

    Run COMSEC custodian duties at the team level per AR 380-40 — sign-for, key load, two-person integrity, destruction, audit prep.
    AR 380-40 is the rule book. Two-person integrity is required on every COMSEC transaction — key load (KIK-20 simple key device into the radio or TACLANE), key transfer between containers, key destruction. The witness signs alongside you on the destruction record (DD Form 2501 or current CMS-equivalent). The COMSEC binder lives in an approved GSA-rated container in a secured space. Audits come from Group's CMS custodian or the cryptologic services office at scheduled intervals; the team's audit-readiness is your name on the wall. The senior 18E or the team's named COMSEC custodian will mentor you through the process — ask, take notes, do not improvise. Espionage Act exposure for negligent handling is the legal worst case.

Manuals & References — What Chapters Matter

  • FM 3-18 — Special Forces Operations.
    Own the FID, UW, and SR chapters. The comm annex you draft maps directly to the mission set — FID rotations look different from UW rotations look different from SR insertions, and your PACE plan and comm package reflect the mission. Public via the Army Publishing Directorate.
  • ADP 3-05 — Army Special Operations.
    The joint and ARSOF framework you write inside. The team's relationship to its TSOC, to SOCOM, to the joint task force commander you support — all live here. Read for the relationships and the authorities.
  • AR 380-40 — Safeguarding and Controlling Communications Security Material.
    You are the team's COMSEC custodian or deputy custodian at this rank. AR 380-40 is the rule book — accountability, two-person integrity, storage, transport, destruction, inspections. Read the chapters on accountability and emergency destruction cold. The audit reads against this.
  • AR 25-2 — Army Cybersecurity; AR 25-1 — Army Information Technology.
    Your forward NIPR / SIPR posture lives here. AR 25-2 is the cyber sub-policy (account management, incident reporting, system authorization, training compliance). AR 25-1 is the IT policy roof (authorities, governance, IT investment). The ARCYBER scan compares the team's posture against AR 25-2 baselines.
  • CJCSI 6510.01F — Information Assurance (IA) and Support to Computer Network Defense (CND), and the current CIO/G-6 / ARCYBER FRAGOs applicable to SOF.
    The joint IA instruction governing how DoD networks are defended. SF is not exempt from joint IA policy even though USASOC operates with its own authorities. Read once for context; reference when the team's forward node comes up in joint task force review.
  • Special Forces Communications Sergeant Course Phase 4 (SWCS) program of instruction and the Group Signal SOP.
    Your MOS phase reference catalog and the Group's institutional knowledge. The Group Signal SOP captures the unwritten part of the job — the freq plans the Group uses, the satellite access procedures the Group works through, the COMSEC procedures the Group's CMS custodian audits against. The senior 18E will hand you the SOP; read it cover to cover in your first 30 days.

Standards — How to Hit Each

  • Two clean ISOFAC isolations as the lead 18E on a team mission set (FID, DA, SR, or UW) — comm package validated, PACE briefed, all rehearsals signed off.
    ISOFAC isolation is the team's mission-planning lockdown before a deployment or a high-stakes training event. As the junior 18E you draft the comm annex, build the PACE plan, validate the package end-to-end, and brief the rehearsals. The senior 18E checks your work; the team sergeant signs off the rehearsal validation; the team leader briefs the supported commander. Two clean isolations means two consecutive isolations where your comm package survived contact with the AO with no senior-NCO-attributable failures. The team sergeant tracks this in the NCOER feeder.
  • IAT Level II baseline credential (CompTIA Security+ or current equivalent) maintained — DoDM 8140 applies to the forward node you administer.
    Pull the Security+ voucher through ACA in your first 90 days on the team. Block 4-8 weeks of study; sit the exam; pass on first sit. Maintain the cert via CEUs over the 3-year recertification cycle, or sat a higher-level cert (CySA+, CASP+, CISSP) that maintains the IAT-II baseline plus opens IAT-III billets. The cert is the floor before you administer the team's forward node; the brigade S6 audit reads against DoDM 8140.
  • Language DLPT at 2/2 or better in the team's target language — the team's UW/FID mission set runs on it.
    Phase 6 SFQC got you to 1+/1+ at the language floor. The team's target is 2/2 or higher. Use the unit's language sustainment hours (typically allocated by Group and supported by contractor instructors), the immersion opportunities the team gets on rotation, and your own study time. The DLPT cycle is annual; track the test date and prep deliberately. The senior 18E's language score is on the team's deployability slide; yours is behind his and the team is watching the trend.
  • BLC graduate; ALC packet built and ready when the team sergeant nominates you.
    BLC is the STEP gate for SGT under AR 600-8-19. ALC is the STEP gate for SSG. The 18-series ALC at the Signal NCO Academy at Fort Eisenhower runs the standard signal MOS curriculum plus SF-specific blocks. Slot allocation runs through Group's training office. Most 18Es push the packet 12-18 months before SSG zone-eligibility. Build the packet with your team sergeant; submit through ATRRS.
  • ACFT 540+ minimum at the team standard — the comm guy does not get to skip the test.
    540 is above the Army average; the SF community typically holds itself to a higher floor. Run individual PT against a team-level standard; the team sergeant watches the team's collective ACFT performance and the comm guy who shows weak hurts the team's deployability slide.
