What it actually is
Changing your entity's legal name is done by filing articles of amendment with the state that chartered it. Distinct from a DBA, which leaves the legal name alone and adds an alias on top.
Do you need it?
Only if the legal name itself must change. If you just want to trade under something else, a DBA is cheaper and less disruptive.
What changes if you’re in uniform
Worth knowing the downstream work before you start: the amendment is one filing, but your EIN records, bank accounts, licenses, and any certification you hold all need updating afterward. If you hold an SDVOSB or VOSB certification, changing the legal name mid-cycle creates paperwork you may not want during a bid.
