A periodic filing confirming your company's basic details with the state — address, agent, sometimes ownership. Most states want it annually, some biennially, a few not at all. Miss enough of them and the state dissolves you.

If your state requires it, it is not optional and there is no version of this where skipping it ends well. What is optional is paying a service to submit it.
