Three Bases, One Exit Off the Turnpike

JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is what happens when the DoD merges an Air Force base (McGuire), an Army post (Fort Dix), and a Navy facility (Lakehurst, where the Hindenburg literally exploded) in the middle of New Jersey and calls it 'efficient' — a word that has never accurately described anything involving three branches sharing a parking lot. Philly is an hour south with cheesesteaks and professional anger. New York is 90 minutes north with everything on Earth. The Jersey Shore is east with boardwalks, Bennies, and the specific energy of a summer Friday that only the Garden State can produce. The Pine Barrens are full of whatever the Jersey Devil is, and the less you know the better. The diner culture is a legitimate quality-of-life perk — 24-hour Taylor ham (not pork roll, fight me), egg, and cheese on a hard roll is a human right here, and every diner has chrome, attitude, and a menu the size of a phone book. Nobody from this base calls it by its full name. Ever. It's 'JB MDL' or 'McGuire' depending on which gate you use and which branch hurt you most recently. The Turnpike exit is your lifeline and your curse.

Population~42,000 military, civilian, and family members across all three installations
Nearest AirportPhiladelphia International (PHL) — 45 min. Newark Liberty (EWR) — 1 hr. Both are major hubs.
HousingOn-base housing available on all three installations — McGuire has the most family housing. Off-base in Mount Holly, Pemberton, and Browns Mills is affordable by NJ standards — $1,400-$1,800 for a 3BR. Further out in Bordentown and Hamilton is pricier but closer to the Turnpike.
SchoolsNo DoDEA. Northern Burlington and Pemberton Township school districts serve the area. Mixed reviews — some families choose to live in better districts like Bordentown and commute. Private school options in the Princeton area.
MedicalMcGuire Medical Clinic — large clinic but not a hospital. Deborah Heart and Lung Center (10 min) is excellent. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick (45 min) for complex care. Philadelphia hospitals are world-class and about 45 min away.
Spouse EmploymentStrong job market along the NJ Turnpike corridor — pharma, finance, logistics, and healthcare. Princeton University area (20 min) has education and biotech. NYC and Philadelphia commutable by train. Remote work is well-supported in the area.
Commute / GatesBase spans three installations over 42,000 acres — cross-base drives are 20-30 minutes. Main McGuire gate off Route 539 can back up at peak times. The NJ Turnpike (Exit 7/7A) is the lifeblood and bottleneck — rush hour traffic is real.
Local AreaJB MDL combines three formerly separate installations in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The area immediately around base is rural and quiet — strip malls and fast food. But the location is the real asset: NYC and Philadelphia are each about an hour away, the Jersey Shore is 45 minutes, and the NJ Turnpike connects you to everything on the East Coast. Six Flags Great Adventure is practically next door. NJ taxes and cost of living are the trade-off for being in the center of the Northeast corridor.
RecreationNYC day trips (1 hr by car or NJ Transit) · Philadelphia museums and restaurants (45 min) · Jersey Shore beaches — Long Beach Island, Point Pleasant (45 min) · NJ Pine Barrens hiking and kayaking · Six Flags Great Adventure (15 min)
