Home of the Fires Center of Excellence, where the sound of howitzers at 0500 is not an alarm clock — it's a lifestyle, a personality, and the reason your VA hearing claim starts accruing interest the moment you sign in at reception. The Army's entire artillery and air defense enterprise trains here, and the sound of outgoing rounds shakes the earth in a way that's simultaneously terrifying and weirdly addictive. Lawton, Oklahoma is what happens when you build a city around a cannon range and call it urban planning — the economy runs on predatory lending, vape shops, and an Applebee's that functions as fine dining. But the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is genuinely beautiful: granite peaks, free-roaming bison herds, longhorn cattle, and prairie dog towns that make you feel like you've time-traveled to the frontier. The bison outrank most of the privates and have better situational awareness. OKC is 90 minutes north for Thunder games, Bricktown, and the brief illusion that Oklahoma has nightlife. The tornado warnings are just background noise by month three. The cost of living is rock-bottom, which means you'll save money, and the barbecue at Meers Store (elk burgers on a homemade bun) is worth the drive down a dirt road.
