One Day. Twenty-Four Names. Zero Ambiguity.
Military time, decoded
The military runs on the 24-hour clock because “meet at 8” has ruined more link-ups than bad map reading. Convert either direction below, learn to say it without sounding like a movie extra, and find out what that Z after the time actually means.

Zulu time & the letter zones
A time like 1430Z carries its time zone as a letter. Z — Zulu — is UTC, the universal reference for orders and message traffic. The rest of the alphabet marches around the globe one hour at a time (J is skipped as a fixed zone; “Juliett” means the reader's local time).
ZZuluUTC+0
GMT/UTC — the military's universal reference. Ops orders and message traffic run on Zulu.

Quick answers
How do you convert military time to regular time?
For any time after noon, subtract 1200: so 1830 is 6:30 PM (1830 − 1200 = 630). Before noon, drop the leading zero: 0630 is 6:30 AM. Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200 — the two everyone forgets.
How do you say military time out loud?
On the hour: "zero six hundred" for 0600, "sixteen hundred" for 1600. With minutes: "zero six thirty" for 0630, "sixteen forty-five" for 1645. Nobody in uniform says "hours" after every time — that's a movie thing. And 0000 is "zero hundred" or just "midnight."
What is Zulu time?
Zulu (Z) is UTC/GMT — the universal reference time the military uses so a unit in Germany, a ship in the Pacific, and a headquarters in Virginia can coordinate without time-zone math. A time written 1430Z means 2:30 PM UTC. Local time uses other letter suffixes; J ("Juliett") means local time wherever the reader is standing.
Why does the military use 24-hour time?
Because "8 o'clock" is two different times and one of them gets someone left behind. The 24-hour clock removes the AM/PM ambiguity entirely — every minute of the day has exactly one name. When a formation, a fire mission, or a flight window depends on the time being unambiguous, that matters.
