ArmyIgnitED: TA Caps, the 7-Day Deadline, and How Recoupment Happens
Tuition Assistance is not a discount, it is a conditional loan that converts to a grant only if you pass. Miss the request window and the term is unfunded. Withdraw for personal reasons and you repay. Finish below a C- as an undergraduate and you repay, with no waiver available. Do that twice in a fiscal year, counting Credentialing Assistance in the same tally, and ArmyIgnitED locks you out for twelve months.

How to handle ArmyIgnitED
Know the two ceilings, and that CA shares them
TA pays up to $250 per semester hour, capped at $4,500 and/or 18 semester hours in a fiscal year. The number that catches people is not either cap on its own — it is that Credentialing Assistance is drawn from the same pot. Every CA dollar spent on a certification reduces what is left for tuition that year.
Submit inside the window: no earlier than 60 days, no later than 7
A funding request can be submitted as early as 60 days before the class start date and must be in no later than 7 days before the term starts. This is a hard edge, not a target. Requests after it do not get funded, and the school will bill you directly.
Clear the first-time gates before you need them
First-time TA users must complete ArmyIgnitED training and use the decision support tool before a request will go through. Neither takes long, but discovering them on day six of a seven-day window is how a term goes unfunded.
Get supervisor or commander approval built into your timeline
For funding requests with start dates on or after March 19, 2026, Soldiers of every rank must obtain supervisor or commander-representative approval through ArmyIgnitED. Rank no longer exempts anyone.
Understand what counts as passing
Passing for undergraduate courses is a C- or higher. For graduate courses it is a B- or higher. Anything below that is an unsuccessful grade and the Army recoups the tuition it paid.
Know which kind of withdrawal you are taking
Withdrawals are classified Personal or Military and matter once the school has assessed a fee. A Personal withdrawal means you repay the TA to the Army. A Military withdrawal — duty requirements, deployment, mission — means the Army waives recoupment for that class.
Count your strikes across the whole fiscal year
Two recoupment actions between TA and CA in the same fiscal year suspend you from requesting either for 12 months, running from the date the second unsuccessful grade is entered or the course or exam end date, whichever comes first. The suspension is not retroactive and applies to approved funding requests with start dates on or after March 19, 2026.
Reconcile grades yourself instead of assuming the school did
Recoupment is triggered by what the school reports into ArmyIgnitED, not by what your transcript says. Grade reporting lags, and a course you passed can sit as unreported until it looks like a failure. Check your ArmyIgnitED record after each term closes and chase anything blank.
The problems people actually search for
My TA request was rejected and class starts Monday.
Usually means: You are inside the 7-day cutoff, or a first-time gate (ArmyIgnitED training, decision support tool) or the supervisor approval has not cleared.
Move: Nothing recovers a missed window. Pay the term or drop before the school assesses a fee, then submit the next term at 60 days out.
I have no TA left and I have not taken a class.
Usually means: Credentialing Assistance drew down the same annual ceiling.
Move: Pull your fiscal-year funding history and add TA and CA together. Plan the remainder of the year against what is actually left.
I passed but I am being recouped.
Usually means: The school has not reported the grade, or reported it incorrectly.
Move: Get the official transcript and the school certifying official to submit the correct grade. This is a school reporting problem — escalate at the registrar, not at ACES.
I got a D and I am appealing the recoupment.
Usually means: A D is below the C- undergraduate threshold, and recoupment waivers are not permitted for failed courses.
Move: There is no waiver route. Set up the repayment and protect the fiscal year — a second recoupment triggers the 12-month suspension.
I withdrew for a deployment and I am still being charged.
Usually means: It was processed as a Personal withdrawal, or the military-withdrawal waiver was not requested in time.
Move: Submit the waiver with orders or a memorandum from the chain of command. The request must be within 30 days of the W posting, so act the week you learn of the grade.
I am blocked from requesting TA entirely.
Usually means: Two recoupment actions across TA and CA in the same fiscal year.
Move: The suspension runs 12 months from the second unsuccessful grade entry or the course end date, whichever is first. Confirm the start date with ACES and plan around it.

Build the proof packet before you escalate
- Fiscal-year funding history showing TA and CA drawdown against the annual ceiling.
