Certified welders with shipbuilding experience earn $60K–$90K in civilian shipyards. HTs leave the Navy with a certification worth $10,000+ in training costs and are immediately competitive in the maritime industrial workforce.
HTs perform structural welding on ships underway — a process complicated by the motion of the sea, confined spaces, and the knowledge that a failure in their weld is a hole in the ship. They also maintain all shipboard plumbing and damage control systems.
