Honest John Rocket Crewman
MGR-1
Served: 1954–1985
Crewed a truck-launched, unguided, fin-stabilized 762mm artillery rocket capable of carrying a W7 or W31 nuclear warhead — the first US Army nuclear surface-to-surface rocket.
The Story
Honest John was unguided. Stabilized by fins. Aimed by elevating the launch rail and trusting the wind. Despite being functionally a giant nuclear bottle rocket, it had a longer service life than every US ballistic missile except Minuteman — 30+ years on the line.
Epitaph
“Unguided. Honest. Nuclear. Outlasted everyone's expectations.”
