Holloman AFB vs NAS Lemoore

Air Force, NM vs Navy, CA

The Intel

Holloman AFB: "Drones, F-16s, and the Loneliest Taco Bell in America." NAS Lemoore: "Strike Fighter Capital of the Navy, Cow Pasture Capital of Everything Else." Two bases that, combined, represent a wide range of what military life actually looks like off the brochure.

What the assignment brief skips: at Holloman AFB, the real issue is Alamogordo is small and remote. At NAS Lemoore, it's Middle of the San Joaquin Valley — very flat. What they'll pitch you: Holloman AFB — White Sands and Cloudcroft nearby. NAS Lemoore — Low cost of living for California. Both run cheap — your BAH pockets actual savings here, which in the military is rarer than a perfect PT score. Climate duel: Desert — hot dry summers, mild winters at Holloman AFB versus Hot dry summers in the 100s, cool foggy winters at NAS Lemoore. Your body will file a formal complaint at either location — the paperwork just varies by season.

Two installations that would be fascinating to swap for a week. The Air Force side would discover comfort. The Navy side would discover character. Neither would admit the other had a point.

Tax & Domicile
State income tax
Holloman AFBNew Mexico: graduated 1.7%-5.9% (top bracket applies to taxable income over $210K single / $315K MFJ for 2024 per NM Tax & Revenue Dept).
NAS LemooreCalifornia: graduated 1%-13.3% individual income tax (top bracket on incomes >$1M per CA FTB). CA exempts military pay earned while serving outside CA for CA-domiciled SMs (CA R&TC §17140.5). Active-duty pay earned while CA-stationed is taxable for CA-domiciled SMs.
Sales tax
Holloman AFBNM uses Gross Receipts Tax instead of sales tax. Alamogordo combined GRT rate ~8.0% (state + local). Legal incidence on seller but passes through to consumer. Tax & Revenue Dept publishes quarterly Location Code map.
NAS LemooreCA state 7.25% plus local — Kings County combined 7.25%; Tulare County combined 8.25% (Visalia is 8.5%). Vehicle sales/use tax on title transfer per county of residence. Groceries exempt; restaurant/prepared food taxed.
Vehicle reg
Holloman AFBNM MVD passenger registration: 1-year $27-$62 or 2-year $54-$124 depending on weight/value. Liability minimum 25/50/10. Otero County MVD office in Alamogordo handles registration. No annual safety inspection in NM.
NAS LemooreCA DMV Vehicle License Fee + registration — VLF is 0.65% of vehicle market value plus registration fees ($65 base + $32 CHP fee + local + air-quality fees). Total annual reg on a $25K vehicle typically $300-$500. Smog check required at registration renewal (biennial in most counties; Kings County is in the I/M program).
Holloman AFB · Domicile Play
SCRA preserves SLR; MSRRA extends to spouses. NM's 5.9% top bracket makes no-tax-state SLR (TX is the geographically convenient option from Holloman; FL/TN/WA also work) a meaningful pickup at senior NCO and O-grades. El Paso is 90 min away and the cross-border move is common.
NAS Lemoore · Domicile Play
SCRA preserves SLR; MSRRA extends to spouses. California 13.3% top rate is the highest in the country. No-tax-state SLR (TX/FL/TN/WA) is structurally the prime play for career aviators and senior NCOs at Lemoore — the annual SLR savings are substantial across a 20-year strike-fighter career.

The Read

What nobody bothers to tell you until you arrive.

Holloman AFB

Holloman is two parallel training pipelines on one flightline. The 49th Wing has historically been the F-16 Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals (IFF / Fighter Lead-In) home — the 8th Fighter Squadron flies F-16s as the Lead-In Fighter Training course for new fighter pilots transitioning from UPT toward MWS B-courses. Per af.mil, the wing also hosts the 314th Fighter Squadron in the F-16 IFF role and absorbed F-22 Raptor Formal Training Unit responsibilities after Hurricane Michael displaced the FTU from Tyndall in 2018 — the 7th Fighter Squadron stands up the F-22 B-course mission at Holloman as part of the FTU split with JB Langley-Eustis. Verify current squadron makeup against the wing's PA office press releases. The other pipeline is MQ-9 Reaper: the 49th Operations Group's 6th Attack Squadron and 9th Attack Squadron run MQ-9 Formal Training, producing pilots and sensor operators for the operational AFCENT and PACAF Reaper enterprise. T-38C Talons fly here as adversary air and AT-38 lead-in. The German Air Force Flying Training Center — which trained Luftwaffe Tornado crews at Holloman for over two decades — officially ended its presence at Holloman in 2019, returning training to Germany. That departure removed a unique on-base international community that older Holloman PCS stories will still reference. The local reality: Alamogordo (35,000 population) is a small desert town in the Tularosa Basin; White Sands National Park is 15 minutes away and genuinely surreal; Cloudcroft (30 min east, up into the Sacramento Mountains at 8,600 ft) is a pine-forest weekend escape. El Paso (90 min south on US-54) is the nearest real metro for shopping, airport connectivity (ELP), and amenities. New Mexico has a 1.7-5.9% graduated income tax — no-tax-state SLR (TX is right there) is the senior-NCO and officer play.

NAS Lemoore

NAS Lemoore is the Navy's West Coast strike fighter Master Jet Base — the structural home of Strike Fighter Wing Pacific (CSFWP) and the entire west-coast F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F-35C Lightning II strike-fighter community. Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Pacific (Commodore) oversees the squadrons on the Pacific Fleet carrier-air-wing rotation: VFA-2 'Bounty Hunters,' VFA-14 'Tophatters,' VFA-22 'Fighting Redcocks,' VFA-25 'Fist of the Fleet,' VFA-94 'Mighty Shrikes,' VFA-97 'Warhawks,' VFA-113 'Stingers,' VFA-147 'Argonauts' (the Navy's first operational F-35C squadron, IOC 2019), VFA-151 'Vigilantes,' and VFA-192 'World Famous Golden Dragons' — squadron lineup shifts with the carrier-air-wing assignments to CVW-2, CVW-9, CVW-11, and CVW-17. VFA-122 'Flying Eagles' is the West Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for both F/A-18E/F and the F-35C transition pipeline — every west-coast strike-fighter aviator and naval-flight-officer transits VFA-122 for type/model conversion. The base sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley near Hanford and Lemoore, CA — structurally isolated from any major metro (Fresno is 45 min north, Bakersfield is 90 min south, the Bay Area is 3 hrs north). The geographic isolation is the structural identity of Lemoore: 'NAS Middle of Nowhere' is the squadron-room joke. The base was sited in the 1960s on flat agricultural Central Valley land specifically to provide unrestricted airspace and noise-tolerant operating conditions for the strike-fighter community — and the structural advantage is exactly that: vast unrestricted airspace, year-round VFR-dominated flying weather, and the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake / Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (R-2508 complex, the Sierra and the High-Sierra Naval Air Combat ranges) within easy training-mission range. Carrier deployments are structurally on the WESTPAC/SEVENTH FLEET cycle — F/A-18 and F-35C aviators deploy to the Pacific theater 7-8 months at a time, with home-on-station turnarounds. The deployment tempo is structurally high (~1:1.5 dwell-to-deploy when surging). For aviators (1310 Naval Aviator, 1320 Naval Flight Officer) and aircrew: structurally one of the elite strike-fighter career pipelines in the Navy. For squadron maintainers (AD, AME, AT, AME, AO, AS, AZ ratings in the air-frame/avionics/ordnance pipeline): high-OPTEMPO carrier-air-wing duty with deployment-cycle predictability. For Strike Fighter Wing Pacific staff and the base sustainment overlay: comparatively normal duty. The honest local picture: BAH for MHA CA023 (Lemoore NAS, CA) — E-5 with deps is $2,139, E-7 with deps $2,337, O-3 with deps $2,451, O-4 with deps $2,673 — moderate BAH against Lemoore/Hanford 3BR rents of $1,100-$1,600 and Visalia 3BR rents of $1,400-$1,900. BAH-to-rent math is structurally generous — among the most favorable in coastal California despite the modest BAH numbers. The structural California tax stack (1%-13.3% income tax) applies but no-tax-state SLR (TX/FL/TN/WA) is the prime play for career aviators. Central Valley climate is dry, hot summers (frequent 100°F+ July-September), cool foggy winters (Tule fog Nov-Feb is structurally a driving and aviation hazard). The structural quality-of-life trade is isolation — Lemoore is the assignment that defines 'remote California' for the Navy.

Real Talk

What you’ll actually deal with. The structured table above is the brief — this is the back-channel.

Holloman AFB
HOUSING

On-base privatized housing (Balfour Beatty) has short waitlists by AF standards. Off-base, Alamogordo proper (10 min) is closest and cheapest; La Luz (15 min north) is a small village with a slightly more rural feel; Tularosa (20 min north) is similar small-town quiet. The high desert is genuinely dry — drainage and roof loads matter less than in humid climates but UV and windblown grit are real factors for vehicle and exterior maintenance. Cloudcroft (30 min, mountain) is not a realistic daily commute for most.

SCHOOLS

Alamogordo Public Schools (Alamogordo HS is the main public option) are adequate but not standout. NMSU-Alamogordo is a real spouse-degree-completion option at in-state pricing. No DoDEA. For families with specific academic-acceleration needs the options are thin; some military families home-school or drive to El Paso for private/charter options.

COMMAND CLIMATE

49 WG runs two distinct training cultures (manned-fighter IFF/FTU and MQ-9 FTU) plus T-38 adversary support. IFF and B-course schedules are student-class-driven with predictable weekly cadence. MQ-9 FTU runs continuous shift operations. The Luftwaffe departure in 2019 reshaped the base social culture significantly — the GAF community had been a meaningful presence for two decades. Current wing identity is settling around its manned-fighter FTU and Reaper FTU dual mission.

BOTTOM LINE

A training-wing assignment with two parallel B-course pipelines and an unmatched outdoor backyard (White Sands, Cloudcroft, the broader Tularosa Basin). The trade is small-town Alamogordo and the 90-minute El Paso run for real amenities.

NAS Lemoore
HOUSING

On-base housing (Lemoore Family Housing, Lincoln Military Housing — newer construction relative to other Navy bases) has structurally shorter waitlists than most strike-fighter homeports. Off-base options: Lemoore proper (5 min, Lemoore Union High School District + Lemoore Elementary — mid-tier, the close-to-base move) is the closest; Hanford (15 min east, Hanford Joint Union HSD + Hanford Elementary — mid-tier, slightly bigger town with more amenities) is the consensus military-family move; Visalia (25 min east, Visalia USD — top-rated in the Central Valley) is the school-upgrade move pushing the commute; Tulare (35 min east, Tulare City Schools) is the alternate school-shopping option. Most strike-fighter families pick between on-base (community proximity, deployment-support proximity) and Hanford/Visalia (off-base amenities, school choice).

SCHOOLS

Central Valley school districts vary. Lemoore Union HSD and Lemoore Elementary rate mid-tier on California accountability data. Hanford Joint Union HSD and Hanford Elementary rate similarly. Visalia USD (Mount Whitney HS, El Diamante HS, Redwood HS) rates structurally higher and is the school-shopping option for families with longer commute tolerance. No DoDEA. Private school options: Central Valley Christian Schools (Visalia), and the limited Lemoore/Hanford independent-school landscape. Tuition runs $6K-$12K — among the most affordable in CA.

COMMAND CLIMATE

Strike Fighter Wing Pacific operates on the carrier-air-wing deployment cycle — squadrons rotate through Inter-Deployment Readiness Cycle (IDRC) phases (Maintenance, Basic, Advanced, Integrated, Sustainment) tied to CVW deployment schedule. The structural cadence: 18 months home-on-station with workups including detachments to NAS Fallon (NAWDC Air Wing Fallon training, 8 weeks), Tactical Training Group Pacific work, and Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) operating off the Pacific coast — then 7-8 month WESTPAC deployment, then 6-8 months stand-down/maintenance. Aviator and aircrew tempo is structurally high during workups and deployment, with structural maintenance-phase decompression at home. VFA-122 FRS runs a more predictable M-F training schedule for instructors and students.

BOTTOM LINE

The Navy's West Coast strike fighter Master Jet Base. F/A-18E/F and F-35C career capital is structurally elite — Lemoore is the structural west-coast strike-fighter community anchor. Quality of life is shaped by the carrier deployment cycle. BAH-to-rent math is among the most favorable in coastal California despite modest BAH numbers. The trades are the structural Central Valley isolation (Fresno 45 min, Bay Area 3 hrs), the summer heat (100°F+ July-September) and Tule fog winters, and the deployment-tempo demands that define the strike-fighter career path.

Who Thrives Here

Not every base is for every service member. Match yourself to the room.

Holloman AFB
  • F-16 / F-22 IFF & FTU INSTRUCTOR PILOTS

49 OG instructor billets in the 8 FS, 314 FS, and 7 FS produce the next generation of fighter pilots. IP credentials at Holloman are a structural career signal — selection signals trust and translates into weapons-officer and command-track pull.

  • MQ-9 PILOTS, SENSOR OPS, MAINTAINERS

6 ATKS and 9 ATKS run the AF's MQ-9 Formal Training Unit. Maintainer accession, pilot/SO B-course instruction, and the AFSC pipeline all flow through here. The Reaper community is large and growing.

  • OUTDOOR DESERT-MOUNTAIN FAMILIES

White Sands National Park (15 min), Cloudcroft and Lincoln National Forest (30 min, hiking/skiing/cool-season escape), Oliver Lee State Park, Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, and the broader Tularosa Basin reward families who get out. The land is the reward.

  • SAVINGS-RATE FAMILIES

BAH math at MHA NM205 (E-5 with deps $1,590, E-7 $1,890) against Alamogordo 3BR rents of $800-$1,100 is one of the better savings-rate AF assignments. Low cost-of-living plus thin local entertainment options means money stays in the account.

NAS Lemoore
  • F/A-18 AND F-35C STRIKE FIGHTER AVIATORS

Lemoore is the structural West Coast strike-fighter community — every west-coast Super Hornet and F-35C aviator and NFO is based here. Career capital is structural: department-head tours, fleet-replacement-squadron instructor billets (VFA-122 SFTI/F-35C TPI billets), and the carrier-air-wing-staff and commodore pipeline all anchor at Lemoore.

  • VFA-122 FRS INSTRUCTORS (F/A-18 AND F-35C)

VFA-122 is the West Coast FRS — Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor (SFTI / TOPGUN graduate) and F-35C cadre instructor billets are structurally career-defining. Post-tour fleet credibility carries forward; SFTI graduates and VFA-122 instructor cadre are the structural senior strike-fighter community leadership pipeline.

  • STRIKE FIGHTER MAINTAINERS (AD, AME, AT, AO, AS, AZ)

Lemoore squadrons run high-OPTEMPO carrier-air-wing maintenance — F/A-18 and F-35C maintainers in the airframe (AME), avionics (AT, AE), ordnance (AO), survival equipment (AS, PR), powerplants (AD), and admin (AZ) ratings find structural career capital. Master Chief and senior-NCO billets in the strike-fighter community are anchored at Lemoore.

  • BAH-OPTIMIZER FAMILIES (CA LIFESTYLE)

Lemoore BAH-to-rent math is structurally generous for California — E-5 BAH $2,139 against $1,100-$1,600 3BR rents in Lemoore/Hanford means substantial housing surplus that's unusual for a California duty station. Families on disciplined financial trajectories find structural value, and the no-tax-state SLR (TX/FL/TN/WA) for career aviators compounds the upside.
