Holloman sits near Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the Air Force trains F-16 and MQ-9 Reaper drone crews in a town best known for being adjacent to White Sands National Park — genuinely one of the most stunning landscapes in America, white gypsum dunes that look like another planet — and also where they tested the first atomic bomb, so the vibes are complicated in a way your therapist isn't prepared for. Alamogordo has roughly four restaurants, a Space Museum that tries hard with the budget it has, and the particular energy of a town that peaked when they launched a monkey into space in the 1950s. Las Cruces is an hour south if you need proof that other humans exist and green chile that makes the drive worthwhile. The Sacramento Mountains are the saving grace — Cloudcroft is a gorgeous mountain town at 9,000 feet that turns Holloman from 'Cannon's sequel' into 'actually kinda nice if you know where to look.' The sunsets over the Tularosa Basin are absurd — golds, purples, pinks that look AI-generated but are just New Mexico being New Mexico. The 49th Wing does real work, the Reaper community is growing, and the cost of living is so low you'll build actual savings. The trade-off is that you're building those savings in Alamogordo, and that's a sentence with its own gravity.
